I have an ‘81 Diesel 5 speed. It’s a weird little truck and gets lots of stares. I’ve had several offers, but it’s not for sale. I found it last year in a tree line in ND. Been sitting for 17 years, most of those indoors I’m told, only about 5 years outside. Odometer showed 84,041 miles. It’s now roadworthy and I’ve got about 9,000 miles on it since I dragged it home.

My dad has a 1982 I believe! It’s a diesel with a 4-speed transmission, and it is baby blue! He has a 5-speed to swap in but didn’t get to it before my grandpa died! That truck was bad ass, and it hasn’t run in years but as soon as his and my time clear up we will get that baby flying again! Edit: My dads made 72 mpg, and that thing was only filled up every other week!

These trucks are awesome and the diesel version is even better. I've never had much trouble finding parts for my truck. If you ever take one of these trucks off-road, they do surprisingly well with their short wheel base, front wheel drive, and heavy duty oil pan. I have hauled 18 sheets of T-111 with it and overloaded it numerous other times and it always made it home. I laughed when I saw that none of the gauges worked, as this is a common problem, especially the speedometer/odometer. Back in the late 90's when I bought my first VW pickup, they were extremely cheap to maintain as there were still lots of VW Rabbits in the junkyards. I absolutely love my truck; I wish VW would make a new version with a TDI diesel. Thank you for the review and video. Take care.

Wow. I had a diesel one of these back when they were new! Our family had it for years and loved it. I got incredible mpg (40+) and easily passed other cars in the snow with it's front wheel drive. Someone drove almost every day. So much fun and very handy. I think the only reason I got rid of it was because I got tired of helping everybody move!!

The 'early westy' package you referred to isn't a thing. Early westys were rabbits built '76-'80 in the Westmoreland plant in Pennsylvania. This truck is a late westy ('81-'84) with the LX package. Late westys big wrap-around blinkers, the hatchbacks had longer tail lights, and they had slightly different interiors. The LX package gave it the bed rails, wood grain dash, and a sliver stripe around the grille

The reason modern vehicles can't get crazy high mpgs like the 80s & 90s, emissions and safety. Those older cars had less sophisticated more robust engines with leaner air fuel ratios. Those lean ratios provided amazing efficiency, but created a lot of NOX emissions. The safety part is that the construction of older cars used much lighter frames and bodies that didn't have much crash protection, but resulted in very light efficient cars.

The owner didn't try very hard. I have yet to find any parts that are hard to find, either over eBay or any number of resellers, new and used. And the diesel gets between 52 and 60MPG, and if you run vegetable oil instead of petro-diesel, even more mileage out of purchased fuel. I own two, They rock.

Towards the end of his “review” he explains that VW made the rabbit pickup for auto shops to haul parts and tools in because of the trucks fuel economy and size? Seriously? I thought the quartz clock comment he made was ridiculous but that wasn’t the end of his total lack of knowledge about the rabbit pickup.

The rabbit truck was never marketed as a truck for shops to haul parts! I learned by the end of the your video that you do not know anything about the rabbit pickup. The early westy package? Seriously! That was not a trim level. The quartz clock comment? I don’t even know what to say about that. There was a reason the rabbit pickup was front wheel drive also, I suggest you research that. The “humongous” storage bin was on models that didn’t have air conditioning. If the pickup, was bought with factory installed A/C that’s were two additional air vents would be. The E on the gear shift knob was new for 1982. There was an arrow on dashboard that would light up indicating when you should shift into a higher or lower gear for better fuel economy and E was 5th gear for better mpg on the highway. 55mph was the speed limit on US interstates back when this truck was made due to previous fuel crises during the early to late 1970’s and early 1980’s. 55mph was made the legal speed limit to promote fuel economy. I’m surprised you didn’t comment on why the number 55 was so humongous on the speedometer. A better review would have also mentioned that the rabbit pickup was offered with a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission a 3 speed automatic transmission and a choice of a 1.6 liter Diesel engine or a I.7 littered fuel injected engine. The trucks claim to fame was it drove and handled like a car but had the convenience of being a pickup when small pickups were offered by several car manufacturers of the day. I could go on and on about the lack of knowledge this kid has about this particular vehicle. Oh did I forget to mention I own a 1981VW rabbit pickup with a 5 speed manual transmission with a Diesel engine LX trim? So I know a lot about the vehicle you attempted to review. I’m not an expert on the subject but if I don’t know something about the truck or another subject I do my research.

Kind of ironic that small unibody pickup trucks are all the rage ever since the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz revisited the same idea as the VW Caddy (especially with the rising cost of gas). Now Ram, Chevrolet, and Toyota are all rushing to come up with their own small compact-based unibody pickup trucks. Ford can't even keep up with the demand for their Mavericks.

i too love the older Rabbit cars and Trucks ,if you want a pretty easy and sometimes cheap engine swap keep your eyes out for a used VW Rabbitt convertible those all have the GTI high performance running gear and many times the old ragtops are being sold because of a very expensive new convertible top is needed and / or some minor body and fender damage due to it was a teenage daughters first car and now they are off to college for a few years that motor and tranny are direct swaps into the pickups i’m a VW water cooled guy but i will be the first to admit that the VW trucks do not come close to my Chevy 3500 Dually Deisel capabilities but those two shouldn’t be compared side by side i bought my Chevy to pull a 10,000lb boat and a 19K lb 5th Wheel camper trailer and it’s geared to do so yet i’m lucky if i get over 10 MPG on the truck empty running up a highway not towing anything obviously with a load i get way less mileage plus the Upkeep is a financial burden as it appears to always need something fixed or a thousand dollars plus of new tires on it yep that’s 6 at a time, E rated tires and a special appointment because it’s a Dually ?

Oh man the 1.7 engine in this car is there because of fuel economy thats right and the reason for this is that this car comes from germany, developed for europe, where fuel costs more than twice as much as in the US...

Actually, This was built for the US the European side didn't get it not the Volkswagen Rabbit. The Volkswagen Rabbit is the competitor for the ram 50, the mitsubishi mighty Max, A Ford Ranger, the Nissan hard body, The Toyota Tacoma, And the Chevy S10 in the olden days anyway. Some vehicle companies went for mileage per gallon. While others decided to go for Hp/torque. The Volkswagen sold because it was a diesel engine option vehicle and got almost 50 to 60 miles to the gallon for a pick up!! The ram 50 did the same thing/ But they had options to go for a horse power diesel engine with lots of torque 295' pounds Ford and Chevy came up with 4.0l v6s Toyota And Nissan had options for extended cab long beds. Which is why they sold. The long beds nowadays are kind of a joke 6' 2f Verses the older long beds. Which where 7F to 8f! Long For small pick ups!!? Not to mention they lasted for ever they were built like tanks!! They don't make them like they used too. :(

You’re a clown if you don’t appreciate this beautiful piece of engineering. Saying the displacement is odd makes no sense when you have 1.8 liter Hondas pushing 1000whp.
