In 70-80 it was a common thing that motorbikes had each their beautiful sound and you could distinguish them by the sound. At that time Maico was in competition with other famous brands like KTM, DKW, OSSA, Husquarna, some Italian brands like Fantic Motor, Ancillotti, TM and many more and so the best motorbikes were built in Europe.

Love the old Maico had a good friend who had a 400 . If you did not pull the decompression lever you would NEVER be able to kick start the beast . I think I can smell the Castrol R . One quart to 5 gallons of high test and you got a weekend of fuel .

That bike is almost 40 years old, and still holds up easily in the styling department.. Looks like a Spaceship... Irreplaceable - and Kenny still can't help doing technicals between trees on the side of the grass lot.. Haha... ✔️

In fact 40 years later and motorbikes can't compete with this one. That was the magic years 70-80 when you had to DIY and people were more intelligent while now is everything electronic and for even a small issue you must go to the mechanic.

Cool bike! You have newer and better Maicos. I grew up watching Maicos from the seventies. You could smell them go by since castor bean oil was the premix oil of choice. I was lucky having a dad who raced MX and TT and Desert racing. from about 1969 through 1979. Husqvarna and Yamahas were what we used. Now bikes are crazy priced, I don't know one person who owns one. I figure around 1980 was about the best time for dirt bikes, a decent amount of power and suspension travel and affordable. Air-cooled and easy to work on.

theres a motorcycle boneyard here in arizona, im going there with a few friends next week to look for a few of these bikes, they have like 14,000 bikes in their inventory, i went there 3 years ago and and picked up a 83 montessa cota 349 for 25 bucks, redone it and i ride it all over. i didnt totally restore it let just say i got it running and working great., i remember seeing a few of these there. im originally from ct, and raced motocross at southwick ma when i was between 12-16 i had a honda xr-75 and a honda elsnore 125 later on. just so you know, back in the early 70's the xr-75 couldnt really keep up with the yamaha and kawasaki 80's two strokes, so we changed the gear ratio to compensate, if i remember i think the xr-75's had a 8 tooth gear on transmission and a 36t sprocket, we put a 10t/ 39t on them and they were pretty fast on big tracks but on a shorter 1/2 mile track we left the 10t on trans and dropped the sprocket to a 34t . but in 1972 they outlawed the gear changing cause the 2 stroke guys were bitchin. "shoe on other foot". so we we had to use stock gears. but alot of us did cheat and run hotter gas, my dad was a tool and die maker and he brought the carb to work and modified it somehow cause in the open class race i was keeping up with elsnores, im 66 years old and i can still blast these bikes around like a 30 year old.

Is that a yankee saying to haul the mail. It's not exactly what we equate to speed down south. Maybe "The seat is as soggy as the mail".
