The Fairmont Futura was my first car. Got a 1980 in 1995. My grandmother bought it for my brother and I. It was older but we had wheels! Didn't have to ride the bus our last year in high school. Was a great feeling to get off the bus one evening and see it sitting there in her yard. I just knew it was ours as we saw it in the yard for the first time! Great memory. It drove well and was clean! Gray w/ black stripe, red interior. Ill always be eternally grateful for that gift!

I’ve been fortunate enough to own 2 coupe box top 78 and 81, and 1 83 Fairmont which was a Futura. Most reliable and low maintain with vehicles I’ve ever owned. These cars kept Ford from going bankrupt in the late 80’s.

Recall for 1982 the Fairmont wagon was dropped, the body shifted across to the Granada. As for the rear side windows rolling down, that was certainly not a feature of the 1982 Chevrolet Malibu ;)

Oh yes, the last Ford car my parents bought! They were loyal Ford fans until they purchased the 1982 Ford Fairmont. It had a V6 but took 3/4 of a mile to reach 55 MPH. They didn't feel safe in this car due to its poor acceleration, constant stalling, and the brakes felt like they wouldn't stop the car at highway speeds. There were also times the turn signals would suddenly stop working among other problems. They were upset that Ford wouldn't stand behind the warranty and couldn't wait to trade it in for another car.

Man, it must have been hard to feel good about your new Fairmont if you deleted the standard AM radio for credit. I wonder how many potential buyers were like, 'Whoa that's too much luxury for me! How much can I save if you get one without that there radio?!'

This video reminds me of the ET movie. It was likely filmed at the same time. Ford Fairmonts were used in ET as US Government patrol cars. The video was taped in the Los Angeles area, perhaps not too far away from Porter Ranch.

One of Ford's "better ideas" (as the company's ads once said). The Fairmont was a compact, but more like a mid-sized car. It fit nicely between the small Escort and the larger LTD Crown Victoria. (There was also the Granada, which was the same size as the Fairmont and took in the station wagons, which left the Fairmont with the sedans and the coupe.). Also note there was no V-8 (the last one, a 4.2 liter, was discontinued after only two model years.). The Fairmont continued into 1983, when the Granada was replaced by the LTD (all the big Fords became Crown Victorias in '83). The smaller LTD was basically a plushed-up Fairmont with a new grill and taillights. It continued until 1986, when the Taurus replaced it. The Fairmont, meanwhile, was replaced by the new Tempo, which arrived on May 26, 1983 as an early '84 model.

One of the few cars I think looked better as a sedan than a coupe, but that's just me. They look boxy now, but back then it was a "crisp" look designed at the end of a decade full of overweight cars. Cool old video!

I inherited my dad’s 1979 futura sport coup that was pushed beyond the mechanical limits of any car should be it outlasted my dad’s abuse and 3 teenage boy’s before my dad finally gave it to me this car survived the alcan Highway and back to the other side of the country and picking up a 15 foot 60s model travel trailer in Washington state and across the country and back to Arizona the trip took 2nd gear out of the poor over worked little c4 automatic transmission but still managed to move the car another 100k and still ran very reliably for 300k before I traded it for a street bike and I wish I could get my hands on another one like it so I could make a sleeper out of it back then I was planning on putting a v8 in it and building a street rod out of it like everyone else was doing with the novas because I didn’t want to be one of the copycat people that had a hot rod Chevrolet because they are like Asshole’s everyone had one and they were boring so I wanted to be unique like the 69 Chevy van I had built with a big block in place of the mid engine 6 cylinder

SteelCity1981 Actually if you Wikipedia the Ford Fairmont it says it was replaced by the Ford Tempo. However Ford kept the bodystyle for the 1983-1986 Ford LTD and Mercury Marquis til it was replaced by the all new 1986 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable like you said.

@@dkt1976dt I see the Taurus/Sable as closer to the true Fairmont replacement, being midsize (the Tempo was smaller, but between Escort and Taurus).

I agree with Donald. The Fairmont was a larger car, yes, but it was a value-priced family car and its direct replacement in the Ford lineup was the 1983 front wheel drive Tempo. The Futura, incidentally, was just a less boxy Fairmont with relatively minor trim and appearance changes such as the quad headlight treatment and sloped rear lights on the two door. The dashboard on the Futura featured in this video was pretty much identical to the original Fairmont dash, albeit with one or two more gauges and controls. I can almost hear the cheap, buzzy seat belt reminder warning right now... The LTD II, based on the same Fox platform as the Fairmont but with a more rounded front end and far more luxurious interior, was the stop-gap model that Ford needed to span between the early '80s Granada (which were also Fox-based in their last incarnation) and the all-conquering 1986 Taurus/Sable. The Granada and LTD II may have been the same size as the Fairmont and shared a lot of common parts, but they were positioned to be more upscale, far more than just a nicer trim level. As such, the LTD II would go on to replace the larger Taurus and the Fox platform would go on to underpin Mustangs into the mid-1990s! It's almost hard to believe now, but the original '78 Fairmont was quite a looker with its compact dimensions and clean, modern, squared-off styling. It used to get unfairly compared to a contemporary Volvo or Audi, of which the Fairmont competed against neither, but it did look like all three carmakers used a lot of rulers when designing their cars in this period! It's funny to think that in just five short years after the Fairmont debuted, the old boxy look was outdated and suddenly rounded, aerodynamic, organically-smooth shaped cars were in. Ford learned that with the success of the 1983 Thunderbird, and the Tempo/Topaz, while not the best cars Ford ever made, certainly were the right look and size for the times.
