Is a caged tiger really still a tiger? Avanti's need to be driven, not left to rot in a garage.IMHO the only truly collectible Avanti's are the Studebaker built models of the early 60's as they didn't make many at all compared to the later post-Studebaker models. Mileage means little as rubber parts, leather and seals decay and oxidize due to age, not necessarily due use/mileage. Even the best of storage conditions cannot keep rubber from breaking down chemically, especially the foam rubber in the seats.Likewise plastics including fiberglass are subject to chemically breaking down. These 80's and later Avanti's ( especially the ones with those wheezy, gutless 305 cid engines, they are just for poseurs just like the ragtop models) are readily available and should be taken out and enjoyed, not coddled like a trailer pony. These later models are essentially Chevelles in interesting bodies with nice interiors. Bargain hard on the price too as most owners are fairly old and unless they are being buried with them, the market will be relatively glutted quite soon as they are not inexpensive to fuel or maintain correctly save for the drivetrain and brakes. Get rid of the heavy and silly spoked chrome wheels and dispose of the fossilized grandpa tires, buy some modern higher performance tires and alloy wheels. Also, pop in a better engine and fuel system then go enjoy an Avanti as it was meant to be enjoyed. No one in their right mind makes any money on a car that is properly maintained, regardless of make or model and the Avanti is not that rare as far as a potential collectible as they were expensive when new, mainly bought by wealthy people and generally well maintained. When these were new( in the 60's) they were sitting speed records and weren't meant to decay in some old wheezy collection or under a carport in Florida. Nothing really special about this car btw as pretty much all of these cars were built to the owner's specs. BTW, these cars are a real pain to find spare bits for, so be selective and picky when buying one. Also, regardless of mileage and receipts, take the car you're considering to your trusted mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. From the ones I have seen in the wild, this one is only slightly above average as it needs work and that paint finish is not what I would consider presentable or desirable. I would also be leery of this one as it spent time in Florida which is a dreadful environment for all cars unless you have true climate controlled storage. Some of the worst cars I have seen in my 60 years so far have been from Florida, regardless of age or manufacture. The heat, salt and humidity down there takes its toll along with any real state inspection of vehicles on an annual basis.
