Bill Rogers was probably the best player in the world in 1981, as he recorded wins in three of the biggest events in the game, taking the British Open by four over a future star named Bernhard Langer, the World Series of Golf at Firestone, and then wrapping up 1981 with this win in the Australian Open. In addition, he tied for second in the U.S. Open at Merion behind only David Graham. He wound up the year second in Mark McCormack's world ranking list, the forerunner to the current OWGR (behind Tom Watson, who captured his second Masters title in '81) and won the PGA Tour's Player of the Year. But even though he finished T-3 at the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach behind Watson and Jack Nicklaus, Rogers faded as quickly as he surged to the statue as an elite player, and was out of the game by 1988, a victim of burnout.

Did Terry Gale play in this 1981 Australian Open Golf Tournament? And sadly though, on Sunday July 24th 1983, which was 2 years exactly after this 1981 Australian Open Golf Tournament, Jack Newton tragically lost both an arm & eye when he walked into a turning propeller of a light aircraft in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

I cannot believe the Harman like waggle by some golfers pre shot! It took forever to hit the ball!

I think that's when Norman was loved by the golfing fraternity. You can hear the commentators bias coming through! He copied Nicklaus' preshot waggle. Another observation is the lack of cap wearing.

Garry Player would end his career with nine majors. Greg Norman, who arguably had more raw talent than Player, ended his career with two. Player was obviously a good closer coming down the stretch. Had Greg had that same conversion rate he surely would have finished with more majors than Player
