However the basics of stripping them down , cleaning and rebuilding anyone can do and it does fix allot of watches. In the next week or so I will start filming my digital watch collection on my second channel. Should be fun!

I had one of these in about 1983, it was amazing for its time. I also have a vague memory of having a digital watch which played the starwars theme around the time. I do remember saving up some coupons (I can't remember what though, maybe Weetabix) sending off a couple of quid and getting a black James Bond digital watch which played the theme. I really liked that one!

Back in 1980 I fell in love with this watch, it was in Boots on a board where you could play with it and listen to the alarms, left school and got my 1st job in 81 where I saved £25 and bought it - 1 year later after my YTS job finished I got a job in a bakery, whilst making meat pies, I noticed the top strip where the speaker is - was missing? Obviously went in to a pie, so after that, I took it to pieces and painted the reflector with yellow fog lamp paint, a bit like nail varnish set up... a long time later, I still have the module with the speaker glued on - where the case went is anybody's guess? lol... 41 years later I can still go upstairs and pick the fully working module up minus the battery - with a yellow screen lol :)

Hi! Thanks so much for making this video! I actually just picked up one of these watches (with guitar and 3 speaker holes, m-321) in great condition from a thrift shop for $10! It wasn't working, and I had never opened a watch before, so your video was a great help. I replaced the battery, but it still didn't work. Pressing the buttons didn't work either. I poked around and found out that there is an AC reset point. Jumping that to the battery did the trick. Fortunately I had a gasket and it is very clean inside. Thanks again for documenting this!

I remember this watch from the very early '80s and I was going to buy one but instead went with a TI and was happy with that but I always thought this one was cooler because of the music. The Texas Instruments seemed 'adult' and more rational, but I love that Casio and it's great to see that yours works so well again. And you're absolutely right about mesmerizing for kids in school. I had a girl who sat next to me in social studies and her family were recent Russian expatriates. She had never seen a digital watch like the Texas Instruments. Most kids who grew up during the Soviet era could not hope to have such things. She was mesmerized by it and asked me to look at it at her desk for about an hour while she completely zoned into it, which totally mesmerized ME as she sat with it gently in her hands, running her fingers over it, gently pushing the buttons, trying it on, etc. I had a crush on her and just to see her interested in anything about me was a trip. We know you really do this for the Ladies, Michael. 😋😄😉

I have a Bovet Rattrapante that I've rebuilt, but the chronograph hand catches somewhere and doesn't sweep smoothly. The drive wheel has a hairspring like the balance, so I'm hitting some friction point that grabs something until there's enough tension in that hairspring that it catches up. Needing advice. Thanks man!

I had a no-name melody watch that would play "Fur Elise" as an alarm in the late 80s, thanks to my dad. It also had 2 flaws: a single slant crack on its acrylic crystal, and at the slightest shock, its time would reset (thinking back, it might just have been a loose battery). Since I was just a kid with thin wrists, I would wear it pretty loose, but I loved it! Over the years, I lost it somewhere, but that was my first love for watches! Since then, I have had many many watches, and currently have a 100+ Casio (mostly)/HMT/Citizen/Seiko watch collection.

Enjoyed that one Michael. You have altered my thoughts about timepieces mate, thank you. I only know a couple of the tunes, there was one in the middleish that had a definite Japanese ear to it. I think the last one is played as men walk innocently towards promised happiness ....... We could have a Dna test done on that yukky gunk and find the original owner or his relatives.

A trip to memory (or is it melody)lane for me as well. As I told on the Facebook group. My mom got irritated by me, playing the melodies a bit too ofen when I was a 10 years old kid, back in 1981. She took my watch away from me and said I would get it back later. When later came, she could not find the watch again. She insisted that she did put it in a drawer. But could not find it anymore. It was never "found" again. Is suspect (no matter what my mother says) that it must have ended up in the garbage bin. 😞

Hard to say without seeing it. Must be contact related if the buttons are not working. Have to tried to set out of the case! Usually you can use a screwdriver on the contact pad to replicate the button.

The dodgy bugs. lol Who knows. Maybe they're watch bugs? New species? Either way, great video. I have a handful of electric quartz digital watches haven't dug into them yet. Been working on my older gears watches for the last 8 months. Might change it up and dig into my electrics. Good refresher video. I have great knowledge on soldering micro spaces and if I come across a movement that has a tricky chip set, I can solder bad connections on tracers. Cheaper then buying or finding new.

Thanks for your comment Jay. My heart is in mechanical movements but I love all watches so will try to repair or learn about how they work. Soldering is something I am dreadful on and on a micro scale even worse but I’ve still managed repairs so for you it will a breeze. Glad you enjoyed the video , maybe watch my Sicura Electralite video as that has a really crude circuit repair

Because under the crystal is the inlay which would get ruined I think. Would be very hard to dry out too. The watch is 40 years old and I don’t want to kill it 😂

What’s funny when I saw some videos on digital watches I rememberd I bought a Curtis Alarm Quartz watch back in the 80’s and when the battery died I just put the watch in my watch drawer. Last month I decided to open it up and replace the battery. Now the watch runs again that has Hour Month Min Date Sec Alarm and a light button. I did have to clean some blue battery leak powder before inserting the new battery.

Hi Mike, great video as always! I have a 1985 steel digital Casio with 100m WR (Marlin). I want to renew the gaskets to get it back its water resistance. Do you just have many generic gaskets lying around? And just grease on the pushers is enough like in the vid?

  • @MyRetroWatches

    @MyRetroWatches

    Жыл бұрын

That’s a difficult one and no one will guarantee water resistance on an old watch. You can easily change the caseback gasket but pusher gaskets are really hard to size correctly given they are so small. Equally the pusher have to be removed and not all of them have e clips like this one in the video. Some you need a special press tool to remove them from the case. Then there is the crystal gasket which might be good but equally if an old watch of 40 years will have gone hard.

Hey, Mike, have you ever considered working on a vintage mechanical alarm watch?. I have a Bulova Sea King with the 11ATRCD movement, and it is scary!. Though it was working (barely), it was crying out for help because it was a grimy gunky mess inside. Well, I am now in the trenches. It is cleaned and I am in the process of reassembly. Wish me luck...I'll need it! 🥴🥴😊😊

Well...catastrophe!. I wondered why the balance wheel wasn't taking off. Everything looked good. Here I nosed around and somehow the bottom jewel had fallen out. What's the jewel called the balance rides in?. Half the incabloc shield was broken off and the jewel came out. Then, I looked under my microscope and the balance staff pivot is bent. How that happened...I do not know. I didn't bump it or do anything to it that I am aware of. What a downer!.

A demagnetiser tool. You basically push a button to activate the magnet and then draw the parts / screwdriver upwards aways from the magnet. Do it a few times. Just disrupts the electrons and removes the magnetism

The speaker actually pries out pretty easily. It's held on by something like double-sided tape... This is actually not critical to keep in place as the module holds the speaker against the case all on its own. I was able to remove the speaker and see the grille from the backside. Looking through the grille, I was able to use a needle to poke through the holes and ensure that they were unobstructed.

I had this model bought from Dixon’s 1980/81. I was around 10 years old and needed to make my parents lives a misery until they bought it for me. I’ve still got it and it works but the case is down to the base metal in places where I tried to restore it as a teenager with a 40 grit disc abrader, thinking the case was solid steel and I could just ‘buff the scratches out’. I thought the best tune of the many stored in its memory was Kalinka, probably not the most popular number at the moment though.. I’ve also got the ‘solid’ gold Seiko memory watch 😊 1983 which is hideous and completely impractical. It was only worn a couple of times due to the class room ridicule before being relegated to the bottom of a drawer for decades.
