Ischia is of volcanic origin. The highest point is the Monte Epomeo with 789 m. Around 55,000 years ago a large explosive eruption produced around 40 cubic kilometers of pumice and volcanic ash. The island has a little more than 67,500 inhabitants and is divided into six municipalities: Ischia (with the districts of Porto and Ponte), Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio (with the district of Panza), Serrara Fontana and Barano d’Ischia.
