Still the fastest Daytona 500 to date. It was almost broken in 1985 and subsequent years after that but still no driver has yet to come close to Buddy's record of 177.602 mph. #RIPBuddyBaker #RIPSteveByrnes

Seeing the cars with being slightly twitchy and bouncing, shows that the cars, of that era, are really being manhandled by the drivers. It makes the current NASCAR race cars look like slot cars with their rock-like stability. This video also shows that good racing can be done with some space between the racers, it does not have to have the cars (of the current era) bunched together with scarcely any space between them.

I was 8 when I watched this race.My Dad liked Baker and was happy when he won.He was kind of a Lloyd Ruby figure up until then and one thought he would never actually win it (soft spoken and a victim of bad luck.) I'm glad he won it.

Eric Cox Also, the fastest 400-mile Daytona race ever was ran that year, won by Bobby Allison at over 173 MPH. Astonishing to see that both records from that year are still up nearly 35 years later.

And yet, not only did the 1980 Daytona 500 finish under caution, but when Bobby Allison set the record for the fastest Firecracker 400, there was a horrible crash involving Phil Finney just after Allison took the checkered flag. In fact, of the three fastest Daytona 500s ever run, the only one to finish under green was the 1987 race (the second-fastest in race history), which was about 70 seconds slower than the 1980 race was. The third-fastest Daytona 500 on the book, the 1998 race, also finished under caution. And actually the fourth-fastest Daytona 500, the 1985 race, had two cautions in the final eight laps, including one that nearly caused that race to end under caution. I also find it odd that, much like the Indianapolis 500 (twice), what was then the two fastest Daytona 500s were run in consecutive years. This was the fastest, and the one that followed it in 1981, was the second-fastest when it was run. It was also ironic that it was Bobby Allison that Buddy Baker beat to win his only Daytona 500, because two years earlier, the 1978 race came down to those same two drivers, and it was Allison that came out the winner. And another connection between the 1978 and 1980 races was that the winning driver used Dave Marcis as a drafting partner in the closing laps. In 1978, Allison drafted Marcis to victory after Baker's engine failure, while Baker and Marcis were running together in the final miles in 1980, though Baker was in front of Marcis at the end of the 1980 race.

1980 Daytona 500 (200 laps/500 miles) Average Speed: 177.602 MPH Winner: Buddy Baker (28) Started on The Pole What's ironic is even though it's the fastest Daytona 500 in the 54 year history of it, the race ended under caution.

That grey ghost Olds was unreal fast. I remember Buddy Baker saying it was the same car that Lennie Pond had set the previous 500 mile record at Tallageda while driving for the same Harry Rainer car a few years earlier. I know you may say they build new cars for Daytona but this was the last year for the longer wheelbase cars. Earnhardt never changed he always wanted 4 tires. That's probably the reason for the long stop. (first one

You guys are right; I had forgotten that sound. The sound of a pure race car. Buddy Baker was a huge man, yet so soft spoken. Nascar is a joke. The drivers of today have trouble just restarting a race, and who started the burnout crap? You would never catch Petty or Bobby Allison doing a burnout! It is now scripted to the point of being totally stupid! Stage racing! Green White Checkers! Red flags! Speeding on pit road! From 1966 until 1988, I went to about 60 races. Today, I would not go outside to see this 'Bore-fest' if they built a track in the backyard!

If you look at the entry list it’s ford thunderbird, Mercury Montego, dodge magnum, olds cutlass, and a Buick century. A lot of the those body’s in new generations made it through the late 80’s. Thunderbird an Monte Carlo lasted through till the 2000’s with brief run of the lumina.

Since it finished under caution, this race failed to give fans the show they paid for, right? Just like 1998, when Earnhardt finally won? This race unquestionably needed a green-white-checkered finish to really put the ole' WWE make-it-up-as-you-go feel into it, and make sure the winning team came down to timing and luck.
