    I attended this game. I was 12. Rooker’s, Blyleven’s, and Madlock’s clutch performances stayed with me over the years. Little did I know it’d be the last World Series game played in Pgh. in now more than 40 yrs.

    I've noticed watching all three games in Pittsburgh in this series, the organist plays 'Rocky Top', frequently. The only Tennessee connection I can think of is Phil Garner, but they play it no matter if he's up or not.

    For those of you who are not aware of this ABC Broadcast team for the 1979 Series. Al Micheals (Play-Play)Don Drysdale (Color Analyst/PBP middle Innings)Howard Cosell (Pre Game Host/In Game Color Commentator)Bob Uecker (Sideline Reporter.) FYI. Keith Jackson (the same legendary College Football Announcer)who was also the Number #1 MLB Announcer/Commentator for ABC at this time in 1979 was calling college football that weekend. Thus Mr. Micheals was filling in for Mr. Jackson for the games in Pittsburgh.

    For me, 1979 was the greatest year in Orioles baseball history. Even better than 1983, the last time we won the Series (and haven't been back since). All of those dramatic late-inning comebacks had Memorial Stadium rocking the entire summer. This was the year the Orioles finally took the city from the Colts and Baltimore became a baseball town. Orioles Magic.

    To the contrary, the Orioles were one of baseball's model franchises back then. From 1966 to 1983, they won seven AL East titles, six AL pennants, and three World Series championships. From 1968 to 1985, the Orioles had no losing seasons, won 90 or more games 12 times, and in five of those seasons, they reached 100 wins. They won 97 games in 1977 despite losing a 20-game winner (Wayne Garland), the AL's best second baseman (Bobby Grich) and the game's premier power hitter (Reggie Jackson) to free agency the previous winter. The Orioles of that time had a terrific farm system, acute talent judgment, and a great manager in Earl Weaver. Hardly the definition of suck.

    C Amoss The Baltimore Orioles played like World Beaters In 1979! While my Boston Red Sox were trying to catch them playing .600 Ball, the Orioles were actually playing .700 Ball while running away with the A.L. East Division. They had These Pirates down 3-1 at the Series, but never seemed to close them out.

    There's absolutely no way a year you blow a 3-1 World Series lead is your best year. I don't give a flip what they did in the regular season. '79 was the Orioles worst nightmare.

  • @zephead4835

    @zephead4835

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Bob31415 there were a lot of reasons for that meltdown in '79, but for me the biggest one was Eddie Murray's insistence on swinging at the first pitch every time he got up. After getting off to a good start in game one it was nothing but strikeouts fly balls and hitting into double plays. It seemed like he was always at the plate in key situations. He killed a lot of rallies. A couple of base hits by Murray and that series goes the other way but he was always swinging for the fences. Singleton was a dud in that series as well, not to put it all on Murray. Something else I found interesting was that nearly every foul ball hit by Pittsburgh fell into the stands while nearly every foul ball the Orioles hit was caught. Jim Palmer should have won at least one of the two games he pitched. He got snake bit in game 2 when Manny Sanguillen hit that pinch hit single to the opposite field then in game 6 Benny Ayala misplayed a ball.

    Not a Pittsburgh Fan, but I was glad that the Pirates won this game because earlier that day The Pittsburgh Steelers got destroyed by the Bengals at Cincinnati, 34-10. I was 17. Spilled my Iron City trying to catch it, Didn't know i was going until less that an hr. before 1st pitch. Whole story pretty crazy. I remember being so excited because the ball was hit by dave parker & he was highest paid player in MLB at the time. Now i'm not sure if I got the details right. The friend who called with the last minute invite was dating Jim Rooker's daughter stephanie and danced to "we are family" on top of the dugout. He took a new 280zx from his dad's dealership in Mcmurray PA and hit speeds of 145 to get us there in < 20min. Ah, to be young and dumb. lol

    The first game in Baltimore was postponed due to rain that had changed to snow flurries the following morning. The game was played that evening, where temperatures were in the 40's. That's October 10, 1979 in Baltimore, when daytime temps would typically be in the mid to upper seventies. The winter of 79-80 was one of the coldest on record. You can see everyone in Pittsburgh wearing winter clothing for game five. Oddly enough, temps would be back in the seventies in Baltimore for game six.

    @@zephead843 What made matters worse was that the Colts and Jets had trampled the Memorial Stadium surface the previous Sunday, making the conditions a tad challenging, to say the least. The Orioles' grounds crew had to use hand pumps to drain the water from the field and used a ton of sand in the outfield to make it more playable. Yet despite the frigid temperatures, the Game 1 crowd of 53,735 was the third-highest in Memorial Stadium history. Frank Robinson, who played on the last Oriole Series team in 1971, joked that, "They always said it would be a cold day in hell before the Orioles reached another World Series."
