Why Keith Jackson isn't recognized more for his baseball pbp excellence is beyond my comprehension. I always looked forward to his classic descriptions.

A couple of notes. First, the 5 runs scored by the Orioles in the first inning of Game 1 set a record for runs scored in the first inning of the first game of a World Series, a record that still stands today. That 5-run outburst led to what was to be the only win for the Orioles in front of their home crowd in the 1979 World Series (the Pirates also won only one of their home games in the '79 World Series, as the home teams combined to lose 5 of the 7 games in that series). Also, the field conditions for the four games played at Memorial Stadium in that World Series were among the worst in modern World Series history, and would play a significant role in the deciding of the series later on. Those poor conditions were due to two things. The first was the bad weather. Game 1 was delayed a day by snow, which in turn meant that the first five games were played without a travel day. The other major reason why the field conditions why the field conditions for the games played in Baltimore was so poor was that the Colts had home games, both just prior to the start of the World Series, and during the time when the World Series was in Pittsburgh. Those two things combined to create those miserable playing conditions.

Interesting observation. The home team won just three of the seven games played. The '79 WS was a very strange series to say the least, starting with the weather. It was actually snowing the morning of this game. This is Baltimore in early October, where daytime temps are usually in the upper seventies to low eighties. The nights are very comfortable, where one can sleep with the windows open. Not in 1979 though. The winter of 79-80 was one of the coldest on record. It's also worth noting that the newer facility with better lighting (Three Rivers) hosted the day games, while the older facility with poor lighting (Memorial Stadium) hosted the night games. Still, the '79 WS is my all time favorite, even better than '86.

Thanks for posting this. In Tempe Arizona, in the middle of the sports-starved desert, I picked the Pirates as my favorite team at age 10 in '74. I watched this series sitting cross-legged in front of our tiny 9" Sony and loved it. I adored Stargell. The next year, grounded and at home, I watched the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey game from the same spot. I wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't been grounded. Add to this the '76 Suns/Celtics series and those four Steeler Super Bowl victories. It was a breathtaking time for this young sports fan.

Here we are forty years later and I am enjoying listening to Keith Jackson, Don Drysdale and Howard Cosell. They called the game but they didn't shove it down your throat like they do today. No on field advertisements, when something happens on the field, they don't always show the players on the bench's reaction. And my favorite, the Orioles left their ace in the game. Today, he probably would have been in the 6th inning or sooner. I miss the complete game.

    1. Those uniforms! (nowadays, the Pirates do the gold jersey/black pants combo for their Sunday home games; while the Orioles wear orange jerseys every Saturday) 2. I do recall my parents telling me it did snow the morning of game 1 3. Earl Weaver would not follow sabermetrics; he'd ride his starter all the way!

And the throwback early 20th century pillbox hat. And the stirrups. God the stirrups. Strong orange stirrups. Strong black stirrups. Not slouchy. Not looking like a wrinkly unkempt set of pajamas. You look at all of that. And you just have to say it: This. Is. One. Of. The. Greatest. Color. Schemes. In. World. Series. History!!! Ah-heh-heh-heh! He could go all. the. way! Yes, it's not relevant to bring up the drug issues of the 1980s when talking about the 1979 World Series. The Pirates and every MLB team had several players who either experimented, or used drugs during this era. It was everywhere in pro sports, and many college athletes also became involved.

Sorry Lou your Orioles CHOKED, COUGH "COUGH" Blew a 3-1 lead and LOST the final 2 at home, and how would you know who was doing "dope" ? back then they didn't do drug testing way back in 1979, and that fat old man was a Money player he came thru in the clutch unlike the O'S who failed to execute when it mattered.. Banjo hitters, LOL, you must be thinking about the Orioles Tekulve blew em all away and made them look amateurish, and Candy out pitched Palmer in game 6, "choke" choke", cough" cough".... The Orioles had some weak players who failed, Dauer let Parker's hit get by him in game 6 that was very costly, and Weaver was out managed by Tanner in Game 7 it was meant to be for Pittsburg just like 1971..

No one was a bigger Oriole fan than I was and I'll tell you right here and now they choked. It would have been nice to have Lee in the lineup, but Murray going hitless in the last 5 games killed us. Murray was crucial in a lineup of habitual non-producers like DeCinces and Bumbry. When he didn't hit, we didn't score. And if the most overrated manager in the history of baseball didn't dick around with that bum Stanhouse in the second game, we might have swept the thing. But that's all in the past.
