Wow, it's so amazing to see a 1979 Pontiac wagon in such good condition. I haven't seen one in years. After all, it's a 37-year-old car, and they are rare now. What interested me most of all is that the radio still worked! I was expecting to hear "My Sharona" (lol)! That design was in continuous production from 1977 until Pontiac discontinued it in 1989. (Chevy and Buick kept it awhile longer.). One more thing: you ought to go to North Carolina's DMV and request antique-auto plates. The car is old enough to have them. And that folding third seat - really cool! I don't think SUVs would have existed if it were not for the station wagons. Just like there would be no soul music without gospel music. Chew on that for a minute! I love the way you end each video with, "There's more where that came from." And, boy, is there!

Ben Thompson Nope, he is correct. Pontiac temporarily dropped the full-size models for 1982; the largest models offered that year were the Bonneville Model G, formerly the LeMans. Pontiac did return to the full-size wagon in mid-year 1983.

My family's holiday hauler was a 1975 Buick Estate. It was a little bit more posh than the Pontiac, and had the clam shell tail gate. The rear seat was where my brother and I spend hours on long car trips. We felt like it was our own world, and best of all it was the maximum distance from the parental units. Somehow we managed well enough with just a couple of board games and a Mattel football game. Good review. seeing these old rigs takes me back to so many family car trips from my childhood.

Wow, it's rare to see a 79 Bonneville Grand Safari wagon. When I growing up, I was 5 and had 3 younger siblings at the time and dad got mom this exact wagon, except it was the green with wire wheel covers. Looked like the Griswold Family Truckster. Honestly had to be one of the nicest cars we had. Auto AC, 8 Track, Fuel Econ guage, RTS, power seats, seating for 9...looking back it was and is a really great B body. Good times in that damn car. I could climb all around in there.

My dad got my mom a new olive green on olive green 79 Bonneville Safari (exactly looked like Family Truckster) I was 7 at the time but I recall it had every option. In place of clock, fuel economy needle (clock above climate control) Climate control was auto with a temp wheel to adjust it, 8 track, wire wheel covers, power recline on passenger side, inside right side mirror control, full guages instead of idiot lights. No clue what motor but had to be Olds or Chevy being loaded. Loved it.

I've posted a couple of times, but I've had 2 Bonnevilles and they are same only by name. I was 27 and got a black on black 2000 SSEi. Just a beautiful machine. My other Bonne was a 2004 Grey with Grey suede interior GXP with the detuned Cadillac Northstar V8. These are considered full size these days but I have to say I loved both. Every creature comfort and 10 more you want, tons of power, great looking, and room for 5. Both awesome for interstate cruising. I would like a 79 though.

I also remember walking home from school one snowy day (live in SE Michigan) and, our driveway was on the slightest of angles. This RWD behemoth wouldn't even make it up that. My dad was out back of it pushing it. I was still living at home and bought a new 96 Trans Am and had to have him do the same thing when I tried to drive it in 8 inches of snow. Also some guy rear ended it. I remember hearing a huge "bam". The car didn't have a scratch on it. B-body beasts!

This car was made one year before the Oldsmobile 5.7 diesel V8 became an option in this version of the B-body. Oldsmobile cataloged their diesel option as early as 1978 for their Delta 88, Custom Cruiser and Ninety-Eight, the Cadillac Seville and the Chevy/GMC C10 series pickup. Next year, it was made available for the Cutlass Cruiser wagon (a 4.3 diesel V8 powered the Cutlass coupes/sedans), the then-new Toronado, and the rest of the Cadillac lineup. All other GM makes got it in 1980.

I appreciate nostalgia, and there are many of these B body wagons still around. But that’s only because they were the family SUV of the day, GM made tons of them, and some of them like this were either rarely driven, or they were pampered. The hard truth is that in “normal” use these cars were not the best quality. They might have lasted about 10-12 years if the owner was lucky, and the last of those years were often miserable. I had an ’84 Caprice wagon that I got rid of in ’96 with 90,000 miles on it. The well underpowered 305 engine that got shitty gas mileage was pretty much toast, the 700R4 trans had been replaced once, the paint had all faded and was cracked, the vinyl “woodgrain” peeled and looked like a brown garbage can liner, areas all over the body had to be filled with Bondo, all the rubber door and window seals were cracked and leaked water, the power windows and door locks either didn’t work or barely worked, the plastic interior panels had all faded, the original electronic tuned radio was long dead, the driver’s door hinges wore out and the door sagged down when opened, the parking brake cables seized, I could go on and on. By contrast my current car, a 2002 model with twice the mileage on it as the ’84 Caprice had still looks and drives like nearly new, everything in it still works, and it still has plenty of power and gets good MPG. I for one am glad times have changed, at least with the quality of cars we have today.
