1979 - Introducing Sperry Univac System 80 Computer History, Educational, Vintage Unisys,

Ғылым және технология

Previously unpublished, this rescued vintage film has been edited, expanded and preserved for historical value. Some audio problems remain, but many have been fixed. Circa 1979-1980, it features the release of Sperry Univac's System 80 mid-range computer. Original film rescue Computer History Archives Project.
Speakers include:
J. Presper Eckert (speaks in two different parts of the film),
Bob Vernon, VP of Marketing and Planning,
John B. Wise, Dir of Marketing, (former RCA product manager)
Bill Simon, Director of Engineering ,
Paul Aspen, Director of System Development,
Bill Grand, Manager Maintainability,
Ferd Buttschardt, Group Manager, Software Development
Just under 40 minutes long, the film features Sperry Univac personnel talking up the latest new computer -- The Sperry Univac System 80. (for 1980). Parts of the original film had sound issues and these have been largely corrected, with a bit of new narration added and some photos. Lots of talking here, but great flavor of a late 1970's computer -promo-"pep-talk." Hope you enjoy. ~ Computer History Archives Project.

Back in the 1980'S, My mother and I went thru the Univac and IBM systems engineering training course in nyc(We had both IBM and Univac computers in our service business), AFTER 2 WEEKS OF TRAINING WE WERE $400 PER HOUR SYSTEMS ENGINEERS!!!!!(THE WHOLE CLASS). IBM and Unisys both make most of their money from consulting services!!!!

I started at Sperry Univac in 1981 and was with them through the acquisition by Burroughs in the late 80s and all the way to until 2005 as Unisys. Burroughs destroyed what was once a truly great American company. Such a shame.

Unfortunately, I found the audio impossible to follow in several places, but what I did understand (and see, of course) was fascinating. Hopefully, a better copy will be found in the future! (Or, since I see this was posted over six years ago, maybe it already has been found.). Thanks for posting it!

Thanks Andrew. The original film was a tough one to transfer. Films of the 1950-1981 time period are subject to degradation because of the material used. The original sound track was very poor in some places. This "remake" at least preserves the data for the future.

Spent some times in Roseville and Dayton training Center. Very proud to work for such company. I noticed the decline in 1990 and left. Today nobody heard about Sperry Univac... Incredible...

Hi Jean-marc, yes, it is interesting they did not show off more of their hardware in this film, even if they just used mock-ups. This amount of narrative would probably not fly today. - I bet your time with Sperry was quite interesting though, they had lots of horsepower at one time. This really brought back some memories! I'd long forgotten about ESCORT & RPG. I was in a group specifically hired by the Sperry UNIVAC LA Manufacturing branch in 1980 to install all of the new System 80's they were going to sell. Unfortunately our branch didn't sell any, but did give one away free to a customer. We eventually were moved to other platforms. The ESCORT & RPG training did come in handy later when I had to support some of our BC-7 customers. The System 80 sure seemed like a good system to me, but customers didn't think it was cost effective.

A great restored footage but the first part was mostly all about economy and the sound is still just sooo horrible,i can berally hear what those engineer saying, because the audio is very clipped, my suggestion is ,,, use izotope RX7 wich is able to futher enhance the audio by removing clipping and noise, also pseudo stereo and high pass filter will help to make mono sound sounding more clearer,, THX for showing this.
