Yup, 1979 model year with the VIN for the win: 9 for 1979 model year, G for Chicago, IL assembly, 87 for T-Bird two door hardtop, H for 5.8L (351 CID) V8 with two barrel, and the rest is the production sequence. The Chicago, IL plant still operates today. The 351 V8 was a sloppy, slow, weak engine. The carburetion, emission control, fuel control, oil control and everything about it was extremely sloppy. Ford was on the skids in 1979 and it showed. We got the tag, we can brag: 60H for Thunderbird two door hardtop, 3F for Light Medium Blue lower exterior paint, Y2 Light Blue/Gray vinyl roof, N2B for Blue/Gray exterior moldings, UB for Blue interior trim, A for factory equipped air conditioning, 7 for AM-FM MPX cassette without CB radio, B for 2.47:1 rear axle ratio, non-locking, X for FMX automatic transmission and 41 for Chicago, IL sales district. The blank in the "S" of the tag should mean that it does not have a sunroof (which it does not). This appears to be a "Heritage" edition. Back then, Ford was all about their "limited editions" as 1979 was the last year for the full size Thunderbird. It would go on the Fox body platform starting in the 1980 model year. Fun fast fact: This one was assembled on Tuesday February 27, 1979 exactly 45 years ago today.

Which 351 is this, the modified or the Windsor? It looks like a Windsor, noting the indention in the middle of the valve cover, where the Modified has no such indention, nor does the 400. I have a 351 Modified and a 400 , both in 77 Cougar wagons. The 351 Modified can take a beating. It's no race horse, but I've had it overheat due to a radiator hose break. Put on a new hose and the car still runs, and I drive it. The 400 I just had rebuilt, and it's dying now when I accelerate. I'm thinking maybe the fuel pump is going bad. The 400 runs hot, so I've had to put in special additives to help keep the temperature down, and added an electric fan. In the Florida heat, it's hard to keep the engine cool regardless. I may add an additional heater core to add more water to the system, if I can figure out where to put it.

@@tompastian3447 Maybe an aluminum radiator would help keep it cool? I'm not which 351 that is. I don't know very about Fords.

@@tompastian3447 I think both the Windsor and Modified were used in these cars in these years, but it doesn't matter. Both were heaps of crap. The 400 was also used, another junker.

What is unusual about this one is that this is the Heritage edition, which is SUPER rare - which has the vinyl roof which covers over where the larger rear side windows would normally be. I've only seen photos of Heritage edition cars. I've never seen one in person. I'm pretty sure they were only available in 1978 (as the Diamond Jubilee edition) and 1979 (as the Heritage edition).

The power split bench seats are great in these intermediate Fords and Mercurys. As these cars age, the electrical issues keep piling on. I've got problems with mine that I can't figure out, from brake lights that won't work, lights that won't go off, etc.

Electrical problems are fun do you have a DVOM and a test light? A factory service manual would help if you have one. I like being able to look at wiring diagrams.
