1979-01-07 NFC Championship Game Dallas Cowboys vs Los Angeles Rams

Спорт

I now have all but 1 win up from the 1978 Cowboys season after this one. A lot of people feel the 78 team was better than the 77 team the year before. Post game interviews are included.

I worked at the Exxon Car Care Center on Oaklawn in Dallas when I was in high school, and one day Hollywood Henderson stopped in for some minor car repair (like a new battery, don't recall exactly) and asked to use the phone. I'm thinking it was 1975. He was such a funny guy, and super friendly. He wound up waiting probably 30 minutes for someone he'd called to call him back, He just hung out with us smiling and joking around. Such a fun guy, and really down to Earth. Wasn't pretentious, just treated us pump jockeys like we were his best pals.

So much for putting the "curse" on Dallas making them wear the blue jerseys. I think that was their first time in them in a postseason game since Super Bowl 5. Dallas was the "home" team for Super Bowl 13 and that was the first year the NFL gave the home team the option for what color jersey they wanted. They obviously went with the white. Maybe should have kept with the blue.

Used to hate jerry jones also, but when I saw him work so hard to get the rams to move back to LA, I gained respect for him. He just loves his team and I would now root for Dallas any day, at least they kept their classic uniforms, didnt change the classic star on the helmet, etc, didn't switch to some neon chrome stupid stuff. Henderson wrote in his book that his drug use had taken such a toll on him, that he was gassed on the pick six and couldn't dunk the ball over the goal post. He would be traded two seasons later in 1980 to SF for a measly 4th pick after his infamous handkerchief incident during a game against washington 1979 season. He was waived after one game. He eventually suffered a career ending neck injury with miami. He retired at age 27. Such a waste of talent.

It is really insane to think that following this game months later in the NFL draft that the Rams did not do anything necessary to draft a top quarterback. Even if the Rams wanted to use the conventional wisdom and say that Joe Montana was not big and physical enough not strong enough in his arm there was a great option in the first round ahead of him. That would be Phil Simms who had all the arm strength in the world to reach anywhere the Rams fastest receiver Billy Waddy might run.

Not sure about that. They had a better record in 1977 and destroyed Chicago, Minnesota, and Denver in the postseason. In the 1978 playoffs they barely beat Atlanta in a come from behind and were tied 0-0 at halftime against the Rams in the NFC Championship until some fine defense and turnovers in their favor led the way to a victory. In the SB they lost to Pittsburgh in a game in which their offense should have played better contributing only 10 points until the last few minutes........ (14 points were scored in the final minutes when the Steelers pretty much had the game)

As a rams fan, this is just so sad. I mean look how great the ram defense played, they were maybe the best defense of the entire decade, yet they never had a QB the entire time. Haden would make some great throws, scramble, he looks really good, but wait, another INT. But look at stabauch, he threw a few picks also in this game they had a great offensive line, some good if not great RB's, yet they would just loose every critical playoff game. over and over again. At first I thought well it's because they never get home field advantage, they always have to play in Minnissota then they finally get home field, in front of actual rams fans, unlike today who are screaming and yelling, and they go out and lay not one but two duds against Dallas. They finally get a home field against the vikings, and there is record rain and a muddy field and they can't do anything. . even in this game you can see how crappy this field was. Mike Fanning, RIP. A decade of utter frustration, then out of the blue the next year they go to the super bowl and almost beat pittsburg with a different qb. I will never forget after they lost that super bowl, the announcers were very impressed and were saying well they may have lost, but look out for this team in the years ahead. Then they just tank until they get dickerson years later, but again, they have no QB. Dieter Brock? Then dickerson leaves and they finally get a good qb in Jim Everett, until he tanks in the 89 championship game and became known as chrissy everett, never to be the same again.

Many forget how great the Rams defense of the 70s where. They where right there with the Doomsdays, Steel Curtains, Purple Gangs, No Names etc. But their offense always let em down when it mattered. Haden was a solid QB, probably would've been great if he were at least 6'2. Great receivers, capable O-line, but average running backs. In those days teams needed stud backfields to win it all. The Rams just didn't have it.

At the very least the Cowboys should wear the blue jerseys as a throwback. Btw, the following season the Rams wd knock the Cowboys out of the playoffs, in what wd be Roger Staubach’s final game, and advance to the SB themselves. 🏈

Prior to losing that game to the Rams (Staubach's last) he had engineered a comeback against the Redskins from a 34-21 deficit to a 35-34 win in the final 2 minutes, not only securing the division for the Cowboys but knocking Redskins out of the playoffs. I can still see the Redskins prematurely celebrating on the sidelines. Truly one of Roger's greatest moments

Man these guys are slow! Like watching today's game at 0.75 speed. And the qbs throwing motion looks like a 7th grader. Today's athletes are far superior and it's not even close. George kittle runs smoother than Tony dorsett for God's sake

Dude I'm a Steelers fan. No need to be a douche. It's the greatness of Dallas that made two of our 4 rings in 6 years during the 70s, so significant
