1978 WCQ Wales 0 - 2 Scotland. Anfield, October 1977.

Nine minutes of highlights of Wales' crucial world cup qualifier against Scotland at Anfield in 1977 - the most extensive footage of this famous encounter available online. And it's a match which has lived long in the minds of many Wales supporters, if sadly for the wrong reasons.
Having crushed the european champions Czechoslovakia 3-0 at Wrexham a few months earlier Wales knew a one goal victory over Scotland would virtually guarantee them top place in the 3 team group and qualification for the following year's world cup finals in Argentina.
Earmarked as a home game for Wales the Welsh FA - with their eyes on gate receipts - made the rash decision to stage the game at Liverpool's Anfield ground with its 51,000 capacity rather than Wrexham's Racecourse and its capacity of 15,000. So when the Welsh team, led by captain Terry Yorath, walked out at Anfield on Wednesday October 12th they were confronted by an estimated 44,000 raucous Scots with Wales 7000 supporters in small pockets dotted around the stadium. To all intents and purposes it was a home game for Scotland.
Undeterred by Scotland's massive numeric advantage among the fans Mike Smith's team battled gamely and created some good chances, Peter Sayer and John Toshack both went agonisingly close to scoring, and Wales were arguably the better tean until the 78th minute when French referee Robert Wurtz mistakenly penalised Wales defender Dave Jones for handball in the Wales penalty area - replays clearly showing Scotland's Joe Jordan in fact handled the ball (to his credit commentator Idwal Robling pointed this out at the time).
Don Masson's penalty - and a Kenny Dalglish second when Wales were desperately searching for an equaliser - saw the Scots qualify for Argentina at Wales' expense, meaning Wales once again missed out on a major finals in heartbreaking fashion.

I was at that game, in the Kop. We got a bus up from South Wales and on arrival were greeted in Liverpool by thousands of Scots. Thinking it was a home game for us, we proudly taunted them by waving our tickets. They waved tickets back. The Kop was three quarters Scottish. It was deafening. Piss filled flagons were occasionally chucked in amongst us as we approached half time. Not a nice feeling, and a desperately disappointing game.

If this vital WCQ had been played in Wales as a home game for Wales which it was at say Wrexham's ground, Wales would have won game and qualified for the World cup. Tavy@ it was jordans hand the ball hit. How could the referee get that 1 wrong. You could easily see hes dark blue arm up in the air then it hits the ball. You could see it from 50 yards away in a heavy swarming packed crowd. So how could the referee and linesman not see that from roughly 13 yards away, more or less. It is one off footballs biggest injustices in football to this day. The referee shouldnt have awarded that penalty, it was a world cup qualifier ffs. And am scottish! But i couldnt believe he gave that penalty. I remember george best saying he had been sent of at least 10 times in his career and booked at least 30 times. And every one was for shouting at referees Becouse they were so bad. He threw mud at a referee against scotland becouse he wasnt getting any protection or even a free kick. He knocked the ball out of a referees hand after a game in wich man city beat utd with a last minute penalty that was clearly a dive by franny lee. And loads more becouse they were just useless. Best said i would score goals and do all sorts of tricks to entertain the crowd and the referees would disallow them becouse they didnt know if it was allowed. They didnt even know the rules of the game. And iam standing thincking and this is meant to be proffesional football. It was embarresing to say the least.

How did Alan Rough play above, for example Bobby Clark of Aberdeen and every other Scotsman who has fancied a game in goal. He is soley to blame or Scotlands exit in Argentina that Summer. Latex gloves were avalible had been for years. Did he use them? No. Whilst the two free kicks by Peru were ok a decent keeper would have saved them. Not only his hair was a joke but his goalkeeping not much better. Apparently good in the dressing room nice bloke etc so put him in the squad by all means. Hey Ally McLeod knew Scottish football as manager at Ayr and Aberdeen he must of known someone better.

  • @gunternetzer9621

A fairer assessment would be that McLeod's tactical judgement and team selection were to blame. Rough was not up to the highest international standards which was not surprising as he was a part time player and of course this was known to the manager so you should blame him. He was a good shot stopper and he did actually save Scotland from a bigger defeat against Peru, but his positioning was shown up in Argentina particularly from long range and narrow angles.

@@thevillaaston7811 I don’t think so. I think they were complacent that they would turn up and win and if Don Masson had converted the penalty they probably would have. They underestimated Peru and Iran because Ally MacLeod’s style was to dismiss the opposition. Might have worked in the 1976 League Cup Final but not at a World Cup! So I kind of agree but I say underestimated and lazy rather than outclassed. Although Peru had some great players. Is that fair?

@@vanderark89 Each to their own opinion. In my time, England have reached 11 finals tournaments. The won the first, that was it. They have achieved virtually nothing in the remaining 10. They are a quarter final side, where they meet a top eight side and go out. Weaknesses in England sides are ruthlessly exploited by opponents. Scotland in 1978? Daglish, Jordan, Souness, Robertson and a couple of others wwre not too bad. But they were alongside Kennedy, Rough, Forsyth and so on. It was never going to happen for them. Rep, Cubillas, and others were light years ahead of Scotland. If you look closely, even the Iranians had a better touch on the ball than the Scots. Scoring chances like the Masson penalty have to be put away. What happend? His kick lacked power and was at a ideal height for the keeper to save. Even if Masson had scored, how were Scotland going to stop Cubillas? Even off the field it was shambles. Can you imagine the Germans or the Dutch ending up in a hotel like the one that Scotland were in? Or not double checking the medicines the players were using? If you look at it dispassionately, a win, a draw and and a defeat was not bad. What could Scotland have done differently? Who can say? Pick as many players from the English First Division as possible. Sticking someone in front of the back four to break up some of the opposition attacks might have ben a start. Its not very fashionable now, but put a UK team together. In 78, the keepers would have been Shilton and Jennings, Keegan. Brooking, Robson, and few others would all have been available.
