In fact, it has been said that Nicklaus would have been considered one of the greatest British Open players, even if he never won it. Of his 19 career second place finishes in major championships, seven came at the British Open from 1964-'79. And consider that this was the first leg of the career grand slam he won after his 38th birthday (he took this Open title at 38, the U.S. Open and PGA at 40 in 1980, and of course, the 1986 Masters at 46).

I think Nicklaus prime easily was from 1972-1978 winning 7 majors in that time period and had 3 records in that time

he (Jack) has such a great memory, he was reciting every play on the ball on all the critical holes. How does he remember such things ? He's amazing.

Me and my sister were the 2 kids crouched on the green at 1 hr 17 mins 58 seconds. We sneaked in with my mum. I was 8. I remember Jack clearly coming down the fairway, waving to the crowds. It was a truly amazing moment 😃

you won't believe it but Jack only won $23,000.00 USD. Slim pickens back in those days. 23K, no lie.

If life was fair he'd have won as many British Opens as Masters. Because he played equally well at both tournaments. But he never dealt with Duels in the Sun at the Masters.

BBC provided the pictures in those days. Was not up to the production standards that the US networks were. Odd camera angles, nothing like today.

Interesting ABC commentary of our Open. I am used to hearing Peter Alliss & co on the BBC. The changing directions of the wind is what makes links golf special and makes players think on their feet for every shot. Bob Rosberg called it right at the start about the wind change suiting Jack better. Would I be right in thinking that Bob was the last major champion to use the full finger grip with no interlocking or overlapping ?
