could you have painted school glue on his face/feet that would just wash off later to keep stuff from growing on him. I put on a couple of coats when I tie dye canvas sneakers so the soles don't get dye on them

Since you did have a problem with the mouth, maybe adding a bit of clay or something into the mouth would help stop that. Could even use the clay as a barrier to shield some features from being covered up but not sure how the solution would react with the clay. Could try growing on it like a growth medium but if its a stable oil based clay it might not react as a growth site.
