    My dad had exact same one he bought new. Around 1983 it had an intermittent issue with only recording on one channel. After several unsuccessful trips to repair shops the problem was discovered to be the long slide switch that activated the record mode which at the time was unobtainable.

    Yep, the contacts of the switch get oxidized and need cleaning. Has anyone tried using a good contact cleaner like Deoxit?

    That was the tape deck I purchased at the Subic Bay Navy Exchange while on board the USS Constellation CV64 with VS-21 during my first Westpac 1977! Kenwood KR5600 receiver, Kenwood 16 Channel graphic equalizer, Kenwood K777D 130 watt 16" woofer speakers and a Technics 1500 turn table. Can't believe I remembered all that but seeing my old model tape deck in your video brought back some memories!

    Thanks for commenting. I assume you don't have any of your original stereo purchase. If so, too bad. Sounds like some good vintage audio equipment.

    @@mguess I still have the Technics turntable and all the albums I had ever purchased. Really should have kept that old stuff including my "68" Chevelle SS 396 that I was still driving at the time! Living large back then and didn't even know it! Lol!

    Thanks for the comment and good luck with your restoration. I use my Akai deck often. Mostly playing my old cassettes and transcribing tapes to digital for friends.

    How did you replace the "big" belt, that goes from the motor shaft around the beefy pully? Did you have to disassemble the mechanism to slip the belt around? I was able to replace my other belts, but not that one (yet).

    As I remember, I did have to do some disssmbly to fit the main drive belt. Unfortunately I didn't get any video of that part of the restoration.

    All you have to do is undo the screws on the back plate and then the pause part and plate comes off allowing you to put the main belt on then u just have to screw it back on and put the pause thing back in place

    What size hole did you drill and how long were the nylon screws?

  • @mguess

    @mguess

    2 жыл бұрын

    I used 4-40 nylon screws 1/2 inch long. I cut the heads off of the screws to adjust the length. I don't remember the size of the hole. I think I just tried different drill bits in a scrap piece of plastic until I found one that worked properly. The nylon screws are still working fine 2 years later.

    I have the same tape deck. How do you fix if the record switch is stuck?

  • @mguess

    @mguess

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would try spraying it with Deoxit D5. This product is a contact cleaner with a lubricant that should free up the switch.

  • @mguess

    @mguess

    Unfortunately I didn't record the belt replacement process. It wasn't that difficult as I remember. You can order a belt kit for the CS 707D online. You will probably spend more time removing the black goo than replacing the belts.

  • @mguess

    @mguess

    It sounds like the "end of tape" is being detected. If I remember correctly the end of tape mechanism is related to the tape counter. Is the tape counter moving when you play a tape?

  • @MisterReltec

    @MisterReltec

    Жыл бұрын

    @@mguess It is counting. I think I figured it out. There is a .5mm wide belt that runs from a large drum that turns the needle at the bottom right of the cassette. That belt is completely desintigrated and turned to goo. So without that needle turning, the tape is being pinched between the needle and roller.

  • @mguess

    Good idea to change all the belts. After 40 years or so they tend to start the change over to goo! Good luck with your vintage Akai, great little deck.
