So great to watch..those straight drives were delightful. We love him in India. Was a very regular voice on Indian Television when I started to watch cricket during the 90s. It's so great to see him in whites courtesy KZread. Lots of love and respect to Sir Geoffrey from a fan in India.

To win games of test cricket you have to take 20 wickets. I’m sure the bowlers who faced Boycott knew they were in for a battle to get him out. And I’m sure his own team’s bowlers loved sitting on the balcony with their feet up watching him grind the opposition down.

Much of the criticism is based on a year or two (a little after this) when he was completely out of nick but managed not to get out, and would grind out 50s with no boundaries, etc. But he was never quite the "blocker" that he's described as.

Of course 99 times out of 100, the ground out 50s or whatever were much more beneficial to the team that getting out early, which most people do when they're out of nick.

46 years ago today (11th August). A great day for Yorkshire and England cricket. Boycott's century was the foundation of England's win in this test and the regaining of the Ashes.

Geoffrey Boycott was such a wonderful batsman. We've had few openers so consistent and what a fitting way to get his 100th Hundred. I still remember watching this on BBC TV. Fast forward to 2023 and I was lucky enough to be at Headingley on the 4th day of the 3rd Ashes Test match to see England beat Australia by 3 wickets. Not a classic England performance, but an exciting match including an excellent innings of 75 from another Yorkshire player, Harry Brook which has given me a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

Geoff Boycott, Len Hutton and Fred Trueman are a big part of why Yorkshire people exude pride. There were other great Yorkshire players but none caught the soul of Yorkshire more than these sporting greats and Yorkshire heroes.

He's been described as arrogant, selfish, mean, a female abuser - but i tell you what, If i was in under pressure in a war trench and had to rely on one person to help me out - that man wold be Geoff Boycott and it's simply impossible to gave anyone a better character reference than that.

I don't think anyone has ever doubted Boycott's grit and resilience, but if you found yourself in a trench with him I think he'd be too concerned with his own safety to bother about yours. He was never a team player.

@TREVOR HART You don't have five days if you want to win the game. You need to score runs fast enough to bowl out the other side twice. Boycott often batted as though he was playing a timeless Test, more concerned with his average than winning the game for his team.

I loved the story of the test match in NZ in 1978 where England were on a run chase 2nd innnings. Boycott was being Boycott, scratching about and playing for his average. Time was ticking so Bob Willis who was vice captain sent Botham in with the instruction to run Boycott out. Which he did!! England went onto win the game.

Glad you said that. Too many people read too much rubbish in the papers. Most of them will never have met him. He was an outstanding cricket, of that there is no doubt. I was there the following day - Boycott caught in the slips on 191, and England comfortably went on to win this Test match.

'My era' and 'greatest ever' don't make sense together. Boycott probably doesn't even make it among the top three Yorkshire openers. Len Hutton and Herbert Sutcliffe were certainly both better players. Hutton and Hobbs were the two greatest C20 English openers.

My first test too! I was 13 and had only just started playing. I bowled my right arm off sending bouncers down to “the Aussies” in my back garden. Then I would be Derek Randall slogging Ray Bright and making run outs. I didn’t properly appreciate Boycott until he left and realised how much of a gap he left

Lillee got injured pre tour and didn't make it to England. His fast bowling 'twin' Jeff Thomson, who did make it to England, had himself sustained a bad shoulder injury not long before in a Test against Pakistan ( I think) - a fielding collision, but did tour. Thommo was never th same again, speed-wise after that injury and England certainly benefitted from that in this series. The Packer aspect made no official difference at this point - tons of Aussies bound for Packer played in this series, not least the captain Greg Chappell, though that spectre did affect Aussie morale

Imagine Boycott batting in 2023 the crowds wouldn’t not what to make of it.He’d probably get to 35 not out by lunch.Don’t know how many times they opened together imagine Boycott and Edrich reaction today. My Grandad said that Boycott was not liked by many fellow Yorkshire players he did witness it.Perhaps though it was his single mind and not been one of the lads in the days of macho beer drinking unhealthy stuff.

Wow I bet that was a long day. I grew up watching Boycott play.....in those days most people took a newspaper to the cricket. I think he scored 1 six in his entire life....I'm not being sarcastic. His ultra cautious approach was heavy going. Thank goodness we play a different game today.

Notice the difference between the commentators of 1977 era and the modern era. No analysis, no criticism of "sloppy shot" and "why is he bowling there with no Gully??!!" i.e. back seat driver with glorious hindsight constantly picking up on the play. I swear this negative commentating (yes I'm looking at you Boycott! and Aggers and others) has had such an impact on the players. If they of earlier eras who like to dish it out behind the safety of the microphone had a fraction of the media focus - they'd have had a wobbly!

@terranceparsons5185 To some degree. Alistair Cook only had 11 sixes in his test career, his percentage of runs in sixes is actually a bit lower than Boycott, though slightly higher than Bradman. Which says that even with shorter boundaries and bigger bats, some test players even in recent times prefer to keep it on the carpet.

Stokes probably hit more 6s in one innings than Bradman hit in his career, doesn't mean that Bradman wasn't the GOAT. The one player I would have loved to have watched though is Gilbert Jessop, especially his 76 ball hundred, which was probably at least a couple less based on the 6 rule at the time converted to modern criteria.

Wanted to watch this. But the.glitches in KZread make it unwatchable now. Yet again the screen split in half with the previous video playing at the same time as the present (going on for over a year now). Congratulations.KZread. Your product is useless and shit. I was at the Trent Bridge test in 77; the Test where Boycott batted on all 5 days, and ran out local hero Derek Randall. I'm not a fan of Boycott.

So great to watch..those straight drives were delightful. We love him in India. Was a very regular voice on Indian Television when I started to watch cricket during the 90s. It's so great to see him in whites courtesy KZread. Lots of love and respect to Sir Geoffrey from a fan in India.

To win games of test cricket you have to take 20 wickets. I’m sure the bowlers who faced Boycott knew they were in for a battle to get him out. And I’m sure his own team’s bowlers loved sitting on the balcony with their feet up watching him grind the opposition down.

Probably the most technical of all batsmen. We all love the swashbucklers, but Sir Geoffrey waited for an opportunity to score. Perfect.
2023 Bazball, 1977 Snoozeball. He was a grinder allright, and a brilliant batsman and now a great commentator.
Got say after watching this, Boycott has been harshly criticized for the way he played, nothing wrong with the he plays from KZread's I've viewed

Much of the criticism is based on a year or two (a little after this) when he was completely out of nick but managed not to get out, and would grind out 50s with no boundaries, etc. But he was never quite the "blocker" that he's described as.

Of course 99 times out of 100, the ground out 50s or whatever were much more beneficial to the team that getting out early, which most people do when they're out of nick.

46 years ago today (11th August). A great day for Yorkshire and England cricket. Boycott's century was the foundation of England's win in this test and the regaining of the Ashes.

Geoff boycott played on many wickets that were uncovered. So the argument that he made most runs on flat pitches is totally untrue.ive been privileged to have known him. Don't believe all the rubbish in the press. He's the best. No doubt about it.
Geoffrey Boycott was such a wonderful batsman. We've had few openers so consistent and what a fitting way to get his 100th Hundred. I still remember watching this on BBC TV. Fast forward to 2023 and I was lucky enough to be at Headingley on the 4th day of the 3rd Ashes Test match to see England beat Australia by 3 wickets. Not a classic England performance, but an exciting match including an excellent innings of 75 from another Yorkshire player, Harry Brook which has given me a memory I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
Geoff Boycott, Len Hutton and Fred Trueman are a big part of why Yorkshire people exude pride. There were other great Yorkshire players but none caught the soul of Yorkshire more than these sporting greats and Yorkshire heroes.
Wonderful player Sir Geoffrey Boycott Under appreciated . Often kept the English innings together. I’m biased - my friend coached me on how to play .

Not disputing boycott technically was as good as they come but the cavalier style of Vivian Richards would do for me in my lifetime seen so many sobers Lloyd kanhai those type of players even the aussies Neil Harvey never saw bradman but his test match average is unmatched as the records prove

I don't think anyone has ever doubted Boycott's grit and resilience, but if you found yourself in a trench with him I think he'd be too concerned with his own safety to bother about yours. He was never a team player.

@TREVOR HART You don't have five days if you want to win the game. You need to score runs fast enough to bowl out the other side twice. Boycott often batted as though he was playing a timeless Test, more concerned with his average than winning the game for his team.
Boycott has successfully faced the best of the pace bowling attack during the 70s and has scored many centuries..Salute

Great seeing Peter West. He nearly ran over my mum in Lords car park back in the early 80’s. I clearly remember him smiling broadly, pipe in mouth as her motioned for her to carry on. Brilliant memory.

I met Geoff a few years back at a New Zealand Test at Headingley. He was endearingly irascible with me. I wouldn't have had it any other way.
I'm a West Australian and Dennis Lillee is my idol but credit where credit is due you have to give it to Boycott. How many extra days play and a extra days takings was Geoff Boycott responsible for during test matches ? He must have the record surely.

I loved the story of the test match in NZ in 1978 where England were on a run chase 2nd innnings. Boycott was being Boycott, scratching about and playing for his average. Time was ticking so Bob Willis who was vice captain sent Botham in with the instruction to run Boycott out. Which he did!! England went onto win the game.
Sir Viv is my favourite but if you wanted someone to bat all then Sir Geoffrey was your man.
I was a teenager watching every test match at this time. Boycott scored a lot of runs, but he wasn’t the most exciting batsman England ever had.
A lot of unjustified rubbish spoken about geoff boycott. Had a written correspondence with him since school days. In my era the greatest opener ever.

Glad you said that. Too many people read too much rubbish in the papers. Most of them will never have met him. He was an outstanding cricket, of that there is no doubt. I was there the following day - Boycott caught in the slips on 191, and England comfortably went on to win this Test match.

'My era' and 'greatest ever' don't make sense together. Boycott probably doesn't even make it among the top three Yorkshire openers. Len Hutton and Herbert Sutcliffe were certainly both better players. Hutton and Hobbs were the two greatest C20 English openers.
They had umbrella fields in those days - imagine if Boycott had four fielders on the boundary like they do now - he would score triple centuries.
Ah, the good old days when the umpire's decision was final, however wrong.

Mike Brearley pioneered the cricket helmet... Jeffery 100 facing Thomson too ... We were allowed to sit on the grass near the boundary ropes in those days ...
I was there, 14 years old, remember people running onto pitch, thought about it, but didn't.

boyks got a lot of flak for his slow speed over the years, but for decades after we needed a batsman who could occupy the crease, and even with today's faster paced more aggressive batting still do.
No security either, or looks like necessary. Police with only a blue shirt, no taser, spray or stab vests. Happy times growing up in the sixties/seventies.

My first test too! I was 13 and had only just started playing. I bowled my right arm off sending bouncers down to “the Aussies” in my back garden. Then I would be Derek Randall slogging Ray Bright and making run outs. I didn’t properly appreciate Boycott until he left and realised how much of a gap he left

Thommo, what a bowler. Was never keen on white supremacist Greig so it was nice to see his wicket.
Best exponent at scoring his runs along the ground, he was rarely caught foreword of the wicket or near the boundary.
Boycott was a great player ,every team valued his wicket highly ,can’t work out why Dennis Lillee wasn’t playing.

Lillee got injured pre tour and didn't make it to England. His fast bowling 'twin' Jeff Thomson, who did make it to England, had himself sustained a bad shoulder injury not long before in a Test against Pakistan ( I think) - a fielding collision, but did tour. Thommo was never th same again, speed-wise after that injury and England certainly benefitted from that in this series. The Packer aspect made no official difference at this point - tons of Aussies bound for Packer played in this series, not least the captain Greg Chappell, though that spectre did affect Aussie morale

Imagine Boycott batting in 2023 the crowds wouldn’t not what to make of it.He’d probably get to 35 not out by lunch.Don’t know how many times they opened together imagine Boycott and Edrich reaction today. My Grandad said that Boycott was not liked by many fellow Yorkshire players he did witness it.Perhaps though it was his single mind and not been one of the lads in the days of macho beer drinking unhealthy stuff.

Notice the difference between the commentators of 1977 era and the modern era. No analysis, no criticism of "sloppy shot" and "why is he bowling there with no Gully??!!" i.e. back seat driver with glorious hindsight constantly picking up on the play. I swear this negative commentating (yes I'm looking at you Boycott! and Aggers and others) has had such an impact on the players. If they of earlier eras who like to dish it out behind the safety of the microphone had a fraction of the media focus - they'd have had a wobbly!
Boycs was a legend when hitting balls instead of women, but Derek Randall (a bit part here) was such a lovely batsman. And great fielder.

Derek's fielding was out of this world. Forgotten as a fielder is David Gower - when the two of them were at Point and Square, nobody in their right mind would take a 'quick single'.
Batsmen like Boycott, Gavaskar, Hanif Muhammad and some others waited for the bad ball and made use of the available time knowing fully that a test match is of 5 days.

He probably didn't think he was. But if no one else wanted to do it, and Boycott was trying to hog the strike, at least in theory the number 3 could have a little wait.

This was the series when Ian Chappell betrayed Australia and ant bedded the Aussie team with dissention and splitting. Defamed Kim Hughes and Craig Sergeant amongst other acts of sabotage.

@terranceparsons5185 To some degree. Alistair Cook only had 11 sixes in his test career, his percentage of runs in sixes is actually a bit lower than Boycott, though slightly higher than Bradman. Which says that even with shorter boundaries and bigger bats, some test players even in recent times prefer to keep it on the carpet.

I remember Ray Bright should have had Boycott out LBW before he made his century. Obviously, the umpire knew that was not in the script.
I was at the Trent Bridge test in 77; the Test where Boycott batted on all 5 days, and ran out local hero Derek Randall. I'm not a fan of Boycott.
If this England team now had Boycs up top with Crawley. Boycs would bat all day and support Stokes as he smashed the Aussies all over the park.
