The game was closer than the score indicated. Nevertheless, that pure talent on the Soviets could just put some NHL teams away. The Red Army team versus the Bruins of the early 70s with Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito would have been a classic in the old Boston Garden.

Observations from a diehard Bruins fan who definitely died hard while watching this game as a high school student in '76. After recently having seen Tretiak in the '72 summit series, the '74 series against the WHA and this game I've come to the conclusion that Vladislav was definitely one of the greatest netminders of all time. He repeatedly saved the Soviets bacon, not only in this game's 1st period, but also in the first game of the '74 series. He made spectacular save after spectacular save and deservedly belongs in the HOF. Kharlamov was also impressive - big, rangy and fast - and he sure could handle that puck. The Canadians had no answer for him. Cashman was understandably fustrated over his interference with Gilbert and the history that stood between them, but the two-handed slash at Kharlamov's ribs was bush. This type of behavior was encouraged by Coach Cherry and was the main reason why the Bruins could never beat the Canadiens when it mattered, because they were often in the penalty box against them.

I remember watching this game locally. The Soviets could play at a marvelous level of hockey without being dirty. Cashman and Schmautz threw unjustified cheap shots without the silly rationalizations. Look at the scoreboard. Only the goals mattered not the rough dirty play. For the Soviets, only days later the Philadelphia Flyers were waiting at the Spectrum. A Sunday afternoon where war was declared in front of a national television audience. My oh my.

i was at this game also and like you i was a senior in high school. Tretiak was decisive in the first period when the Bruins has 20 shots on goal. Afterwards though the soviets really dominated the play with their awesome puck control, skating, and puck handling skills. They were badly outshot and yet won going away b/c they were so skilled they didn't need many shots to score. It was a classic clash of styles between NHL hockey and Soviet hockey. They also almost beat the canadiens who were just beginning their dynasty run of 4 straight Stanley Cups. The Red Army were the best team in the world at that time.

PRO means money Ben. NHL owners are rich, and want it to stay rich. You are right, there were many great teams we never heard, of if you did not see them in person back then. The Russians proved you do not have to be NHL PRO to be the best in the world. Today, we learned a lot from these games. The world stage is much bigger than money.

Thanks for posting this however, Bolshevik, it's too bad the Bruins didn't really get rough with the Soviets. Boston had better teams a few years after this.

is it not funny, actually sad how the arrogant nhl when ranking the greatest teams of all time only include nhl teams, the 1976 montreal canadiens were voted the best ever, and they were, with the 1980s edmonton oilers second, but what about this 1970s red army team.or those great check teams or even some great minor league teams when the ahl was pretty much as great as the nhl, no matter what nhl propaganda says.like those 1960s rochester american teams they were so good they were capable of winning the stanley cup,as were some of those 1960s quebec aces teams.the red army tied that 1976 montreal team 3-3 and if a series of games were played between the two with the red army geting an equal amount of home games they could have beaten the 76 canadiens the greatest team of all time.so why did the nhl not give the ahl a crack at the cup in that time, not now of course, but then,or the russian and check teams a chance, because they are selfish small thinking people...and i know the ahl even with those great teams of the 60s was a so called minor league, but there was nothing minor league about those rochester americans or quebec aces teams.but the nhl dosnt like to get embarressed, and who gets cheated we the fans...

agree! yes, canadiens' 76-77, or 75-76, or 77-78 team's, pick one...were, obviously the greatest hockey team ever....but russian red army team was a second or third...i'd put 2nd the canadiens' of 1956-60....

When you're talking about the Red Army team of the 1970's, you're talking about an all-star team. If they were the best, then where would you put Team Canada '72 and Team Canada '76 and the American Olympic team in '80 - I believe they all beat the Red Army stars. And come on about the AHL. They WERE a MINOR LEAGUE, which is why their best players graduated to the NHL.
