This is the race track where J.C. Agajanian spotted the great Parnelli Jones and felt that he was going to be good enough to drive at Indianapolis. Parnelli drove for Aggie for all but one of his USAC Championship Car races. That one race was the 1967 Indy 500 when Parnelli drove for Andy Granatelli in the "Whoosh Mobile" Paxton Turbine car, coming within three laps of victory when the car lost its drive due to the failure of a $6.00 transmission bearing. Parnelli retired from driving IndyCars at the end of the season. RIP Roofus Parnell Jones Gone at the age of 90 years.

Some familiar surnames, Kinser, Leffler, Saldana. And a variety of cars too, upright Sprintcars, far lower specials and even a full bodies Super mod.

It looks to me that the Offset Big Block Super Modified's would have a major advantage on the high banks of 1/2 mile Winchester Speedway.

Poor Samy Sessions used to race snowmobiles. He was racing one when he hit a tree and a limb cut his head off. What a way to go, sprinters were dangerous enough.

That place has always been crazy fast. It also is very bumpy. Centrifical force pushes the car directly into the banking, and uses up all the suspension. I have never liked it there.

Half of those cars looked like super mods. And what was the Rear engine job?

Man oh man this is awesome I got in a 1970s style sprint car at age of 10 at the asphalt 1/4 mile oval my parents owned in Canada. When we bought the track we found a old 1970s sprint car fully restored and ready to run pushed it off started up flawless and my mom drove so did I but she didn't wanna get in it and my dad doesn't know how to drive a racecar he just loved working on them and being my crechief and spotter my whole life. I hoped in it turned 20 warm up laps got use to it by lap 25 I was running crazy 11 second laps crazy fast and very sketchy safety wise lap belts and no windshield or bars to protect your face and a bomber style seat not even full race seats in them back then And runnning almost same speeds as my modern sprint car u had when I was 14 when we moved back to states we kept the track open for 4 more years cause he retired from the us air force and Canada kicked us out. I still have that car today in my raceshop I'm 29 now and I started it up this morning and ran like it did when I was 10 and ready for aa vintage sprint car race of I can find one in the country on asphalt or dirt. One chassis back then was easily made to switch out the suspension from dirt to asphalt in a hour or two

@@fedupwithfedforever4151, Bob and my late father were good friends. Which car did your family own? Ensign's #37 or Durnwald"s #92

I am soooo glad they shit canned the rear engine cars, the offsets, and the roadsters. Usac couldn't have withstood another screwup that big. I don't know if you remember in 71 when they separated the dirt cars from the champ cars so a champion didn't have to run any dirt. I still wish they wouldn't have split. Imagine how great it would be to watch front engine cars on circle tracks instead of street courses and airports. If they wanted to go head to head with f1, they should have seen right away that it was impossible. In F1, real car companies have to build the car. Can't you see what the American manufacturers would have come up with. Indy is what it is. They barely fill the field and few can remember the last five winners. One of the few things usaf did right was outlaw non conventional sprints.

THAT brought back some memories. Was this a full on USAC show or was it an ASA show? Seems like there was a lot of supers in there. Thanks for sharing this vid!

+Wing Side Up Not a USAC show. I assume it was either an ASA or non-sanctioned show.

It actually was a non sanctioned race, mainly ISMA supermodifieds. Most everyone raced at Sandusky speedway on a weekly basis.

It was a non sanctioned race. Mostly ISMA supermodifieds that raced in Ohio, Michigan, and New York. My late father was in the #28 Null's special sprint car.

Run what you brung. I wouldn't call this a sprint car race. All the supers ended up front as they should.
