I remember this like it was yesterday...I was in Grade School and my buddies and I snuck in on Sunday. The Graham Mahaffy playoff was on Monday. I still have the Sports Illustrated Magazine in my collection.... "Madness at Medinah".

This was the last of 4 straight years that Palmer had a chance on the final day to win the US Open and the very last time he was in contention on the last day of any major. His last top 10 was at the 1977 British Open, where he had the best weekend of anyone not named Nicklaus and Watson and finished 7th but never had a chance.

I followed Palmer on Day 4 at Medinah. The gallery was five-deep anywhere he went. He was very accurate tee to green but couldn't buy a putt. Palmer birdied 15 and 16 and needed to birdie 17 and 18 to tie the lead. 17 was a prodigious 230-yard Par 3 downhill with a lake in front. I was standing 15 feet below the tee looking up. Arnie hit a 1 or 2-iron and spun around in disgust because he drew it too far and was 40 feet left. He missed the putt and that ended his bid. Crenshaw dropped it in the water on 17 on Day 4.

@@robertschelly That sounds exactly like the Palmer I saw in person in the 1980 US Open at Baltusrol. I followed him on Saturday morning and then Nicklaus that afternoon. Palmer still drove the ball incredibly well (it was more fun to watch his drives than Jack's), but if his approaches missed the green, he couldn't get up and down. And he couldn't can any birdie putts, 3 putting for bogey several times. Also interesting, in this video it looks like he was using a Zebra putter but, in 1980, he was back to using a black flange blade like in his heyday.

@@jonburrows8602 I remember that Zebra ... Ray Floyd ran the 1976 Masters with one of those so of course I had to buy one. For me, Medinah in 1975 was seconded only by watching Sam Snead shoot has age (66) at the 1977 Ed McMahon Open out in cornfield country USA (N.E. Illinois). I stood behind Snead at the practice range and followed him until the round was called for rain. He set up well right with a closed stance and drew everything from 8-iron up. He was remarkable.

What memories! I love the song at the end. Usually played for hole breakdowns! ABC had such great coverage back then!

Time between shots in 1975 abc sports is way different than golf on the tube today... still its great to go back to that time in the game....

On the 14th hole you could hear what sounded like 20 cameras going off just before Nicklaus took the club back and then continued throughout his swing.

How can you upload a short cut video? What happened to Jack? This one really should have not been uploaded.

Right - how could you not show Arnie and Jack walking up to the 18th green. I'd be shocked if ABC didn't show that.

Jack drove poorly on the last few holes and got on the bogey train.
