As the owner of a sweet '74 Matador X (360 4 bbl) I really appreciate you posting this video. With Allison's Matador winning both Darlington races that year it really put the car in the Nascar history books forever.

This was the first NASCAR race I went to see. I was 14 years old and Bobby Allison was my step dads favorite driver. It was a great day for sure, one I will never forget.

In addition to this being an exhausting victory for Bobby Allison and car owner Roger Penske, it also had to be an extremely emotional win for Penske, because it came just 13 days after the death of Penske's first superstar driver, Mark Donohue, who crashed in practice for the Austrian Grand Prix a couple of weeks earlier and died from his injuries on August 19, 1975. This was the first race Penske's team won after Donohue's passing. (Ironically, Penske would also win the first IndyCar race run after Donohue's death, a 150-mile race at Michigan, with Tom Sneva scoring his first of 13 IndyCar wins that day.) And believe it or not, after sweeping the two races at Darlington in 1975 with Bobby Allison, it would be 43 years before a car owner by Roger Penske would win another Cup race at Darlington, when Brad Keselowski led a 1-2 sweep for Penske in the 2018 Southern 500.

I was shocked upon viewing Rusty Wallace's team Penske result's at Darlington! How could a driver so good at Rockingham, Martinsville, Richmond, Bristol ect...be so bad at Darlington?? He, whilst with Penske, never even sniffed a Victory there! 🤷🏻‍♂️ SMH

@@Slinger43 While Rusty never won at Darlington, it's not because he didn't run good there. In fact, he was very competitive there for much of his career. It's just that, during his time in NASCAR's top series, Dale Earnhardt had eight wins at Darlington (not counting the 1982 spring race), Jeff Gordon six (not counting the 2007 race there), and Bill Elliott five. So that eats up a lot of races right there. And remember that, as great as he was, and he was very competitive at Darlington during his career, Richard Petty never won there after the 1967 Southern 500, and had scores of second and third place finishes there for the next two decades, but no wins. And we also can't forget that, as great a driver as he was, Tony Stewart was also never able to win at Darlington, and rarely even ran among the leaders there for much of his career. But one thing that I think hurt Rusty at Darlington was that he never really liked running close to the wall, and having to run up next to the wall can affect drivers that don't like to run up there. I believe that was a reason why Tony Stewart struggled there, because he never really liked running next to the wall, either.

This was the first full season Richard raced with serious health issues, mainly with his stomach. Sometime later he would finally see a sawbones about it, where bleeding ulcers were discovered, a serious issue he would not deal with until 1978! Those guy's back then, Petty, Pearson, Cale, Baker, The Allison's ect...were tougher than steel 💪😉

    American Motors MATADOR WINS. AGAIN

Does anyone remember this headline: " Allison & his AMC Matador rolled to victory today. Unfortunately so did the cam". Tech inspection after the race revealed the cam to be a roller cam, Allison was disqualified. The Rambler was too good to be true.

You might be referring to the season finale in 1974 at the Ontario Motor Speedway, which Allison won in Penske's Matador, but after the race, it was discovered that his engine had illegal roller tappets. Allison kept the win, but his team was fined $9100, an amount Bill France, Jr. came to on a whim. France had seen a plane that had "9100" as part of it's number, and that's how France came to that particular amount to fine the team, which was a lot of money in 1974.
