1974 attempt to kidnap Princess Anne.

In March of 1974, a mentally ill man attempted to kidnap the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II. It is the closest that a British royal has come to being kidnapped in modern times. In the harrowing moments of the attack, the attacker and the princess carried on "a tedious conversation." The History Guy remembers the attempt to kidnap Princess Anne.
The episode is intended for educational purposes. All events are portrayed in historical context. No graphic depictions of violence are included.

I once was a motorcycle dispatch rider in London in the 80's. I was speeding through Hyde park and the police pulled me over and started grilling me. It was looking pretty serious until their radios started blaring. The cops muttered something about 'that bloody woman' and out of no where a Scimitar appeared being driven at very high speed and they took off in pursuit. It was Princess Anne and she saved me a court appearance and no doubt a substantial speeding ticket. Thank you Princess Anne - you saved me a lot of grief.

Princess Anne went on a tour of a riding for the disabled project where my ex wife worked in the 1980's - when a brown nosing supervisor said " And how should we address you, your Royal Magnificence " or something similar Princess Anne looked at the girls working there, rolled her eyes and said " Call me Anne "

"The medal is from the queen. The thank you is from Anne's mother.". How perfect is that?

    “That’s a liberty......he needs sorting!” I love British understatements.

Typical British comment. "A very irritating conversation."

My father, who was in the Police, met the royal police protection officer, James Beaton, whilst they were both recovering in the same hospital. Beaton from the shooting, my father from an unrelated back injury. They became good friends.

Several years ago I met an Irish man in my home town who thwarted an attempt to kidnap Princess Elizabeth (i.e. Queen Elizabeth) in Northern Ireland. He was awarded the St George's Cross for his actions. For many years he was unaware it was awarded to him, but eventually he was tracked down in Canada and was presented with it. I had the pleasure of meeting this man and he showed my the medal along with the citation that went with it. He also had the original newspaper article. I can't remember the year this attack happened, but it would have been before 1952

After hearing this story, I feel like Princess Anne deserved a medal of bravery as well! It takes a lot of guts to tell a man with a gun to your head that you're not going with him.

He's lucky it was not the Queen, she would have beat him senseless.

The last part is great, “the award comes from the queen, the thank you comes from Anne’s mom”

"He shot at me so I hit him again fair and square"Only in Britain. They confuse, confound, and amaze me on a regular basis.

This whole story was incredibly British. That said, I'm rather impressed by Anne's composure. Her strength and clarity under pressure is admirable. I'm not sure I would have been as cool and collected under the same circumstances.

It is a great pity that Anne was not the Queen's first born. Great video.

I was in St George's Hospital that night, in a ward that overlooked the site of the event. The first we knew about it was the larger number of blue lights and horns than usual on the road outside. The shots were not particularly noticable. The later story when it was reported didn't surprise me at all, I lived near Windsor and had seen Princess Anne in action before, and would not have started any sort of dispute with her! I had increased respect for her from that moment.

Politeness. Bobbies. Understatements. Royals. This is the most British kidnapping ever. The only thing keeping it from reaching peak Britishness was the lack of tea.
