This 1974 Alfa Romeo Montreal is an immaculately restored, example with low miles and a beautiful finish inside and out. The Montreal was produced from 1970-1977, designed by Marcello Gandini for Studio Bertone. Gandini had previously designed the Lamborghini Miura, and some crossover styling details are apparent both from outside, and especially under the drivers seat. Under the clamshell hood is a fuel-injected, four-cam 2.6L V8 making a supposed 200 horsepower, but we suspect actually it produces quite a bit more, along with one of the most fantastic engine notes we've ever heard and a stratospheric-for-the-time 7,000 RPM redline. By the end of its run,, the Montreal cost more than a Porsche 911 Turbo or Citroen SM. Fewer than 4,000 total examples of the Montreal were built, and towards the end of the run, Alfa Romeo had trouble selling the last of them. Today they are incredibly collectible, and on the retail market, this example would fetch between $125,000 and $150,000.

Just shows beauty is in the eye of the beholder; I think this is one of the best looking cars ever.

Mark McMarkface well is is from some angles.Too many hands or market department demands can turn pure beauty into kit carish unrefinement. This car is almost there. If you see it as the most beautiful ,your designer eye is over looking some aspecs to get to the pleasing ones. So be it....Its far from ugly. But its the total balance of the over all attention to detail.Like a perfect song...it flows, is memorable. A few of the angles on this car needed a little more resolve to flow into the great angles it does have.

MindDezign Please note I said one of, not the most. I'm not a designer, it's the overall impression the car makes including its size, noise and image that contribute to its looks. Note also I said I think; I was just expressing my humble opinion without being absolutist.

That exhaust note made the hair on my neck stand up
Love to see a Montreal....BUT, Please at least mention something about the quad cams, the 8 individual throttle body's, the amazing mechanical Spica fuel injection, dual CD ignition systems used, dry sump lubrication...and what else. These among many Italian engines are amazing engines for a reason.

S Elshout amazingly "rare" and thats a crying shame all that Mastery kept from the world. It was a different time then and its a shame thats a beautiful motor. I just hope it doesn't suffer from porous alluminum like most Alfas get stricken with over time.

I appreciate the copious amounts of drive-by shots at RPM.
I have a giant spot in my heart for this car. You may not like its looks, Matt, but I do, and the SOUND. GREAT segment.

This is one my favorites Alfa Romeo Ever Made!!
Damn, this is what's great about Matt's channel, the absolute variety of cars that he presents. Gonna miss this stuff.
Alfa has always built beautiful cars. Their engines going back to the 1920's were always hi-tech and the engineering fabulous. The Montreal design is eye-catching and stunning. I think that my 63 Split Window Corvette has beautiful lines. The Montreal with that raspy 2.7 V-8 is something else!
My GOD, the noise that comes out of that thing. Holy hell. I think I'm in love.

A while ago I was at the Stelvio pass in the Italian Alps. This one guy in a Kermit-green Montreal was carving it up all afternoon. Up and down and up and down. Can't blame the guy. What a car.
I first saw this car in the 1974 film 'The Marseille Contract' driven by Michel Caine. One of the most famous scenes of the film was a race between the Alfa Romeo Montreal and a Porsche 911S driven by the actress Maureen Kerwin. This scene has since been recreated in the films Goldeneye and Mission: Impossible 2.
Majority of auto vloggers have the camera in their face the entire video. Very glad here we have the car perspective
The sound out of that car is something else!
Who would put their beautiful rare Montreal up for rental? This is madness.

Neil Bolin this is what's up... never buy "low-mileage, grandma-owned vehicle" unless you enjoy rebuilding low-mileage, grandma-owned vehicles
I owned one, built June '73, #AR10564 - 2001062, color Blu Medio AR347. one of 70 known in USA at the time. loved it so much these details are burned in my mind. took several epic cross - country trips, still loved it when the chain driven water pump failed, requiring engine overhaul. Matt, you have no clue how much maintenance that awesome V8 required LOL
You will have to point out the angles that the Montreal looks awkward from. It's simply stunning from every angle that I have ever seen. Nice to see the stance on this car has been improved with about an inch drop and decent wheels filling the arches. Much nicer than stock.
i didn't think i would ever see another one of these! thanks to all involved.

I only have ever seen one in the flesh..an orange one like this one..You never forget it !!!! Pictures do not do the car justice, and sometimes exaggerate its quirky body angles...whereas in the flesh...it's looks pretty close to perfect !!!!
Possibly the best One Take yet. Perfect car. perfect road. Perfect sound. Amazing. Cuore Sportivo! Too bad Matt didn't get to drive Alfa's signature Busso V6 in a one take. That is one of the best sounding engines of all time.

Vithursan B when you've driven over 500 cars and not get to appreciate properly the effort that these people have gone to in producing/maintaining these cars only to drive them for 15 minutes I think you can understand why Matt is ending this part of his motoring journalist life. He has said that he will still review press cars from time to time as he will have spent a lot of time in the car first before given his opinions on them.

You are right that is a sweet sounding V8 and I love the look of that machined metal trim work!
what a Beautiful Look , Interior and Sound . The Company should recreate these Beauties and they would be sold immediately .
The exhaust note gave me goosebumps .. And a stiffy ..
I've owned a '73 for 12 years now It's been a great friend. Love it dearly.
Damn. What a spectacular one take. Gorgeous car, and back to the snake like one takes of old. Just awesome Matt! Thanks for the content!
God bless 70’s Italians and their near 3 litre V8 exhaust notes...fucking enchanting
Between this and the vintage 8C 2300, Alfa's made some MONSTER sounds with small 8-bangers.
I read about this 40 years ago in a book I bought, I think it was "Twenty Fastest Supercars". This was one of the sexiest ones but they downplayed it due to the displacement. The exhaust note is simply intoxicating.
Wow, you should review more classics like this
Engine magic,V8's,deprived here in England. Love that Montreal
It makes me so happy to see how courteous to cyclists Matt is. As a car guy who, on occasion, will roam the streets on two wheels without a motor, a little bit of extra space when passing cyclists goes a long way. And of course it goes both ways; I am careful not to hold up traffic and to be very predictable in the way I ride because I know how frustrating cyclists can be to drivers.

Wow! Thank you Matt for this great video! I always loved the Montreal but now that I could finally hear it (never seen one in real life) I love it even more. Fantastic car!
Ex owner, drove "her" since I was 13 on twisty sicilian roads. Sold it, at 25, but I think I ll have another one soon. Same color, same Campagnolo wheels, 1972, 84000 kms. I m crying right now, thanks Matt, love your job.
Have always loved the Montreal. Thank you for doing one takes on two of my all time favourite cars, the Montreal and the Citroen SM. Thoroughly enjoyed both videos.
This is one of the most amazing sounding cars I have ever heard, fantastic !!
I didn't know how amazing these sound
What a KILLER looking Alfa!! I have never seen one of those before. Super-cool! THANKS for showing us this beast.
What a beautiful car, Alfa’s are something else, idk why but they have something special you can’t put your finger on
I did a gig last summer for the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club, held here in Montreal. There were a lot of cool Alfas there, of course, but the highlights (for me, anyway) were a couple of Montreals and an 8C. The 8C was actually inside the hotel - in the anteroom to the reception halls. Beautiful cars.
Tip of the hat, Matt. Thanks for all the great entertainment! Looking forward to more podcasts and driving those great roads myself in a few weeks!
Good vid Matt, thank you. I always had a soft spot for the Montreal and now I know it was for a good reason!
Love it bro the sound is Breathtaking..
This thing is straight up dope. Awesome exhaust note and looks great.
I have waited for some years to see a good video about the Montreal thanks. Lucky I have seen 2 in my life because in real life they look even better
I LOVE this car! Wish I could drive one someday.

Tom we don't pay Matt a dime, what you pay your ISP has nothing to do with The Smoking Tire. So yes the show is free. The man has put out constant great content for the car community and youtube nowhere near compensates for that. The man deserves to be paid, he isn't a charity.

@@VSautomotive That's a pretty good deal to me. A short ad for a product he actually believes in for free viewing of that engine note. The people who complain about ads were probably born in 2000 and barely remember TV, which had 10 minutes of ads for every 30 minutes of content, and that was anything but free.

Wow - that interior is *so* 1970s Italy! That exhaust note, though - seriously good! I could listen to that all day! It’s surprising that such a small V8 can produce that kind of noise. 2.6 Litres?!! There are 4-cylinders that are that size!

It sounds like a BETTER muscle car. Calling it a better, Italian, muscle car would be redundant. "OMG I HATE THAT LIVE AXLE HOP" said no Alfa owner ever. It only took Ford another three decades to learn what Alfa Romeo knew in the 70's.
Damn, listen to that thing. Beautiful car. Would love to see more classic One Takes. What a fantastic video.
