We performed our usual cold start and short drive on the road to see how this Lotus Europa John Player Special performed before we consigned the car for sale with us at Trade Classics.
This gorgeous Europa Special (JPS colours) is owned by Mark for just over three years and has built a beautiful car collection of over fifteen cars with the help of his brother-in-law; Rob Carrigan. Mark loves the thrill of buying the best examples he can, once added to his collection he then enjoys driving them when he’s in the country. Mark really does only buy the best-of-the-best examples, and we are very fortunate to be handling the sale of his collection.
So why is Mark now selling his collection? Well, Mark is based overseas and these days he doesn’t get the opportunity to drive his collection as much as he’d like, as more recently his business opportunities are keeping him abroad, so the time has come to pass the cars to new custodians.
Rob looks after the collection for Mark and no expense has been spared in the maintenance of the vehicles. Rob makes sure that whatever the cars need is actioned straight away using specialist garages and original parts. Even the finest indoor covers have been purposely made for each individual car at a cost of over £300 each, and are included in the sale. Every car is securely stored in a new and dry professional unit, as can be seen in our media footage.

When I was a boy my uncle took me for a ride in his new Europa Twin Cam, my first experience with a performance car. It was an eye opener that I've never forgotten. Nice to see this video.

I have wanted a Europa since I was a teen and a Super Seven for about 25 years. They are unique and stand out in a crowd. Then you have the sound and, I would imagine, the fun, of driving them through the twisties. Maybe I'll get lucky and win the lottery and get to own one someday. I have looked at the kit car versions as a way of getting to own one, and that would have the added bonus of getting to build it.

I had a 72 Twin Cam and it was the best car I've ever owned for fun factor. After I sorted almost every system in it (which was remarkably inexpensive most of the time when you do your own work), it was reliable. I put 14,000 miles on it!

The Lotus Europa is a well balanced , mid engine car , built for customers with similarities to the Ford GT40, obviously a much smaller engine and weight but a very low drag factor. They are a dream to drive, tight but not a hard ride. Ease of access to the engine and quite simple mechanically. There are not many S2 cars remaining and few of those are completely original.

A wonderful car, half a century of driving pleasure. But in today's SUV and HGV world it seems vulnerable to bad drivers in other vehicles.

My dad had one when I was, young, I drove it when I was older... I let him sell it like a fool. But other note I still have the fiberglass trunk for it. Anyone ever need one I have the orignal one for a 71 s2

That is a beautiful story Brandon! Our owner bought his Dad's E-type after he lost it through bad times many decades ago - found it on ebay years later - restored it - now he drives his dad around it everywhere! Maybe you could do the same, try and find yours! www.tradeclassics.com/ Have a great day :)

I had car #152 back in the late 70’s. Totaled it going around a corner that had wet slick leaves on the road. Took the rear end right off. One of my saddest days in my life.

Always liked this car but considering how talented the Brits of that era were at metal forming, why they didn't go with an alloy like aluminum. Plastic seemed to give the vehicle a "kit car" feel.

Can you name us a road going car manufactured by Lotus which was metal bodied, ever? Instead of “kit car “ , think advanced racing car technology available for the road.

Michael Rigby I wouldn’t want one to arrive as a kit and attempt putting it together, but understand the basis of the comment. I think it was a matter of Ally vs Fibreglass. Both requiring skill and time to produce and lighter than steel, and both with a better power to weight ratio. Lotus also produced Caterhams as a kit car. So apparently their use of fibreglass was based on safely delivering sports car performance with seamless bodies not needing the same extensive stages to produce as with Ally shells. Down to choice I guess, I’ve driven an esprit and definitely didn’t feel like a home made kit car.

Most Lotus cars are fibreglass bodied , keeps the weight down , is strong and doesn't rust. Now racing cars have progressed from Glass to carbon fibre but the principle is the same. Aluminium does oxidise if it is in contact with steel over time and is much more difficult to form and repair. Lotus did not feel like a kit car in my opinion.

Congratulations. You earned a thumbs down for your video work. Not interested in seeing the drivers face for most of the video. The small time when you had the camera facing forward must have been an aberration ... lol. It's a pity, because I owned a Europa back in the very early 70's and would have enjoyed a trip down memory lane.

Total form follows function. The car is designed to be great handling, light, mid-engined, and simple which is beyond elegance. The form just follows that.

I have heard this before , but the lines are so similar to the Ford GT40. I always found the Europa S2 to look nice , but the Twin cam with cut down sides was not my taste. I suppose it is in the eye of the beholder as they say.

I wouldn’t say ugly, just different because of the mid mounted engine, but it grows on you over time and is memorable compared to so many wedges you see today which are so similar. At the end of the day it’s subjective. I think the bug eyed Morgan Aero and Marcos are ugly but many will disagree with me.
