Laverda (Moto Laverda S.A.S. - Dottore Francesco Laverda e fratelli) was an Italian manufacturer of high performance motorcycles. The motorcycles in their day gained a reputation for being robust and innovative.
The Laverda brand was absorbed by Piaggio when, in 2004, Piaggio absorbed Aprilia. Piaggio has elected to quietly close all activities related to the Laverda brand and has publicly stated that they would be willing to sell the rights to the brand if an investor should appear. As of 2015, Laverda.com no longer redirects to Aprilia's website. Currently, laverda.com shows the history of company between 1873 and 2004.

Beautiful bike, however the Norton front disked bike of that era brake worked flawlessly for the 40 years I owned it with some hard driving and crash evasion.

I bought a brand new 750 SF in Australia and it was very different to this bike. Many of the parts that you say are original, most certainly are not. There are many non stock pieces on the bike in this feature. However, thanks for posting and I relish the 4 & 1/2 years that I had my Laverda. It had over 75,000 miles on it when I sold it.

Hi, good vid I also have a 1973 SF in red and living in Northern Ireland in immaculate condition. Your pronunciation of Dell'Orto and Fiamm made me smile. I have both Britsh and Japanese bikes of this period and these bikes are far superior in quality, handling and a real rider's bike and yes the drum brakes are excellent the rear maybe too good. Today they are really underrated.

@@RetroBikesDublin I think I saw it for sale on Done deal Saturday week ago. The Australian guy got a great deal. I was in Limerick collecting a BMW r75/5 which was also on Done Deal and also a really nice bike, I won't deny I was tempted to call with you and see the Laverda, maybe sometime if you have something else I hanker after.

Super freni brakes were Massimo Laverda's answer to Fontana whose Milan workshop was just too expensive for racing brakes. The SF twin was his masterpiece.

1973 Laverda is normally an SF1, but I think this is probably a 1972 SF because of the square-slide carbs and open bellmouths. 1973 models had Lucas handlebar switches, believe it or not, same as a Norton Commando. The exhaust system is non-original, headlamp for a '73 would be a chromed-plastic CEV unit, one year only. The original headlamp he mentions, which is not on the bike, is probably a Bosch. All that aside, it's a great motorcycle. I have both a 1971 SF which would be quite similar to this one and a 1973 SF1. The 1973 engine had many changes. The SF1 is faster but the character of the earlier SFs like this one is wonderful, very much a lumpy, hooligan feeling. If nothing else I could tell this is an SF rather than an SF1 simply by the sound of it when he's riding.

How would you compare the reliability/durability of these vs. Ducati Desmo 750/900 twin of the same era?

@@jdesmo1 I've never lived with those Ducatis, but everyone I know whose opinions are worth anything says the Ducatis are more fragile and need more maintenance. They are a brilliant ride though. The Laverda twin is often considered over-engineered and carries extra weight as a result. Ducatis are pruned down close to bare minimum weight. I think a Ducati 750 GT weighs around 75 pounds less than a Laverda SF1.

My new 72 model had the lucas switchgear and beautiful CONTI exhaust system which sadly rusted quite severely within the first year.

Laverda twin is probably one of the most durable bikes of the era, in general far more durable than the Ducati twins although they too are great bikes. To live with? The laverda by far every time. One of the Best Buy’s of the time and build quality and quality of materials used is very good. The perfect classic bike along with some of the guzzi twins.
