On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-16-23.
We’re looking at a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix SSJ Hust in Black and Gold Paint. The car comes with a 455 CI V8 and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Keith Vrabec. Keith’s had this car since 1988. Keith shares there were only about 500 “Hurst” cars and only 10% of them were in Black & Gold, most were White & Gold. This car looks showroom new.

WOW!!!! I remember when I was a kid, whenever I saw a Grand Prix, had to look at the badging to see if it was a Model J. On only one occasion, did I actually see an SSJ. It was a '72, and it was white and gold. I never forgot it. Never saw one again. What a thrill to see this today!!!

Absolutely I have said the exact same thing many times. GM should of dropped Buick or GMC and kept Pontiac being it was their performance division. GMC is just a higher trim level Chevy and Cadillac could of replaced Buick.

I have a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix model J. I've added the SJ badges and have a 455 engine to put in it at some point when I retire in a few years. I added factory guages, power windows, power locks, tilt wheel , power seat and power trunk release. It was green, now it's black with red pinstripes, dual exhaust and repainted Rally 2 wheels. One of the best driving and handling cars I've ever driven!

Wow….. I worked in the body shop of a large Pontiac dealership throughout the 70’s and 80’s. Loved the Grand Prix!! I noticed how meticulous the owner handled his amazing car. When he shut the trunk lid and drivers door, he very carefully put his finger on the trunk lock and door handle. And, when opening the hood, he was very careful to only touch the very edge of the hood as needed. The owner “gets it”! My compliments to the owner!

The engine was not set back, DeLorean back in the day and another exc, wanted gm to have the longest hood, they did. So the shroud on 69 thru 72 have elongated shrouds. I have the twin to that car, honeycomb, tilt, power-trunk. They are fantastic cars. Great job as always Lou. I need to get ahold of you ,do some segments on my toys. Thx again for doing the black 72 stage 1 car with Bill so I could buy it. It drives great. Too bad weather is bad tho.. cheers sir..✌

My first car was a 1972 SJ-455. Picked it up at a dealer in Galt Ontario in 1973 as a theft recovery. It was at the back of the lot and the dealer helped with getting it from the insurer and as it had some damage and an engine issue it was pretty cheap. However by the time I got my licence in 1974 she and new paint and the engine was rebuilt and ready to go. It was the coolest car in the lot at high school for sure. I resent years I've been thinking I should get one again, maybe one day. I do know one thing & that is while these have great style and lines ETC. They are a body mans nightmare... It's also to bad the the SSJ's never actually had a Hurst shifter - would have looked so cool with a set of Lightning Rods....

1972 is the beginning of the end of Vintage Muscle cars. Chrysler put a few big blocks but car manufactures started detuning engines to meet new Federal emission standards and pressures from the insurance industry. To replace the horsepower, some manufacturers started dressing up cars. This one here is a beauty.

Pontiac realized shortly after its introduction that the Grand Prix was not going to be successful on a full sized platform. The decision was reached to give it its own unique platform for the 1969 model year. Bill Mitchell was very impressed with Duesenberg automobiles, especially the styling of the boattail roadsters, thus the front and rear styling you pointed out, Lou. It also influenced, actually Pontiac outright copied model designations, Model J, etc. The results were quite striking, and successfully rescued the Grand Prix, as sales more than doubled in 1969. This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare car. Thanks for capturing it.

My uncle had one in the late 70s while in the Military and spent tons of his officer pay on it and man what a fast all black ride It actually did seem possessed by something evil especially at about 150 and screaming 😱 like a banshee. I'm pretty sure that the '71 Hurst GP was the first car to have a factory landau or half vinyl roof. The Eldorado's followed in '72; in '73, the Colonnade formal-roof coupes got them, and then they were everywhere. The black exterior is much better than the white. I had a plastic GP model in brown--so 70s. To me, these are Peak Pontiac.

Stunning car but I prefer the 73 Olds in white. Im thinking the white would be nice on the GP SJ as well. The rotating bucket seats and dule-gate shifter were a couple differences on the Oldsmobile. Maybe its due to Shelby using the blk/gold combo on the hertz Mustang abd Olds doing the white/gold combk since 68.

In the 70's I worked at the Henderson Pontiac Dealership on 5151 W. Madison in Chicago as a Gofer! During the summer breaks during High School, Knew The Old Man Mr. Henderson an avid Golfer whose favorite joke was "Old Gofers don't die! They just lose their Balls" he would bring in his Golf buddies, sit them down and make at least 5 bills over retail! they thought? They just received the best deal of the Century! He could still sell! But I've always believed that Pontiac's were GM's most powerful & sporty & luxury models of All the GM line! Only Cadillac made a better luxury car! But believe it or not? The Grand Prix's were the #1 seller in that store! They had the looks, power with many options and you didn't have to fold yourself in two to enter the car! like you did with The Firebird! The Grand Prix's & Monte Carlo's were the sporty/luxury models that had the looks & street cred! Depending on your engine choices! Love your Videos and that Special order Hurst Grand Prix is the Cat's Ass!

A very rare and beautiful car. This was the last year before bumpers grew and the last year for this body. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this car off of the midsized Tempest/Lemans/GTO platform and NOT THE full size Catalina/Bonneville platform? It appears to have only the bare minimum speedometer and fuel gage with a clock. There are no other instruments or tachometer, which is a poor decision by Pontiac and Hurst.

My floppy sneakers fired offa my quickly KO'd tubesocked stocking 53 year old, 148 lb, chick crazy 🤪JV baseball jock feet and off to Illinois SO FAST to search out you and Keith and that amazing Pontiac Grand Prix....I don't know where to start, Lou-cause you know I am a true blue Pontiac guy since I was a young kid playing Pee Wee baseball in Rockland County, NY 😜. I know one of my persoanal automotive heroes-John Delorean-had a huge hand in this '69-'72 GP and man, does it show. Unapologetically masculine and a man's personal luxury sporting coupe, 100%! Sure, man-chicks are allowed (please!!!!), but in the passenger seat(s). Lol but true 😜. What style and character this car has, and the Hurst package gives it a unique kinda menace. Tho I do think some other colors (not black) may flatter the GP's lines better, this Hurst package makes it truly special, right down to the power sunroof and that wildly thick vinyl roof. Awesome engine and sound. The driver's area is truly like a jet fighter cokpit, and to say I would be behind the wheel in my tubesock stockings with my sneakers hanging off the rear view mirror is an understatement, big brother🤪! WOW. So glad you felt the magnetic pull of this Grand Prix and thanks for bringing him to us! JV Johnny ⚾⚾
