Kilmer was as tough as they come. Didnt look pretty doing it but got the job done. That last play with his helmet coming off and the look of exhaustion on his face is tough to look at. He was a gamer.

The Atlanta Falcons also had a 1000 yard rusher in 1972. Dave Hampton, #43 who appears in a couple of plays on this video, rushed for over 1000 yards on the last game of the season. The Falcons stopped the game to give him a trophy for being the 1st 1000 yard rusher in their franchise history. On the next play he lost 6 yards and finished the season with 995 yards. Well, I'm sure that's the worst letdown the Falcons ever had in their history.

You probably only hear that in response to the assertion that the '72 Dolphins "were the greatest team of all time." Because they weren't. Don Shula himself said the '73 team was better. The '72 Dolphins are one of 13 teams to have defeated every mediocre team on their schedule during the regular season en route to winning the Super Bowl. The other 12 teams all had to face teams that were at least 3 games over .500, which is where their losses occurred. Miami's opponents in 1972 had a combined winning % of .367. They faced 0 division winners. They faced only 1 team from the other 5 divisions that finished as high as 2nd place. (8-6 Kansas City) And they faced a total of 2 teams with winning records. (8-6 NY Giants were the other one) Miami was undoubtedly the best team in the NFL in 1972. They deserved to be celebrated for their perfect season. But they were not the best team in NFL history. At the very least, the '73 Dolphins are ahead of them on that list.

@@dantheman5745 The two Franchises in 72 that finished above 500 that the dolphins vanquished , Chiefs and Giants both actually defeated two post season participants. Giants beat western division champ 49ers and defending SB champ cowboys ,the chiefs conquered the central division champion browns and Western division winner raiders .This rationally places more merit upon the 72 dolphins having a objective place in the goat conversation. Two of the 72 Dolphins adversary's that fell victim vs them , who finished with winning records succeeded at placing a "L" on the season ledger of those playoff teams , and both chiefs ,and Giants teams hosted the visiting dolphins .Both had excessive incentive towards vanquishing the dolphins ,the chiefs craved revenge from the previous post seasons double overtime loss at arrow head stadium, and the Giants were competing for a post season slot in the week 13 dolphins contest . The dolphins obviously persevered in both meetings ,displaying that imprint of historical great intestinal fortitude, fundamentals, talent ,IQ, and coaching . There are many SB champ 🏆 teams who were either knocked off by below 500 teams or teams who missed post season ,yet they finished barely above 500 , yet the 72 Dolphins weren't victimized by any of those obstacles . They earned the right to be in that goat conversation. Nope ,I'm not a dolphins fan .

The NFL that year brought the hashmarks in to align with the goal posts. They believed this would open up the passing game. What happened is that that year there were more 1,000 yard rushers than ever before. It wasnt until 1978 that the passing game opened up with the addition of the "bump and run" rule.

Whether some liked coach Van Brocklin, or not, he really improved the Falcons. They were a terrible team when he took over, four games into the 1968 season. In 1971, they had their first winning season (7-6-1) and 7-7 could have been 8-6 in '72. Botching a last minute, chip-shot field goal at New England, cost them the game. I was rooting for the Giants in '72. Went 8-6 but could not stop Larry Brown, and could not beat the Redskins. I recall their games being roughouse affairs.

I recall three of the Dolphins' four wins against the weak Jets and Bills seemed fairly competitive, but maybe that was more a result of the Dolphins ball control strategy making those games seem closer on the scoreboard than they were on the field. All told, Miami's 17 wins included only 5-6 victories over winning teams, the primary criticism of those questioning their greatness. Even with 2 losses, the the 1973 Dolphins might have been the better squad, especially given how they destroyed their three playoff opponents by 17-18 points, in comparison to the 1972 team which almost lost to the Browns and Steelers .

Congratulations to the undefeated 72 Dolphins ,still the only undefeated SB Champion 🏆 ,the most underrated SB champions .They could have played in any era ,Don Shula proved his ability to adapt successfully with Marino .Those SB the Dolphins possessed all of the essential elements to play in a passing era ,a mobile ,efficient Hof QB ,Hof WR , excellent offensive line with a Hofer amongst it's legion Larry Little ,Hof RB , multifaceted RB , tromendous speed back , complimentary wr's and te's ,a complex 34 defense which could negate any proficient pass attack ,that also had it's Hof personel supported by elite complimentary teammates .Great coaching staff and fan base . I'm.a Steelers fan but I'm objective ,those SB Dolphins 71,72,73 were incredible .

I was born and raised in Miami Florida. The Miami Dolphins undefeated team is a very big deal. I have the privilege to sit in the old Orange bowl On a Monday night game in 1985 when they beat the Bears. I am also a triple with the classic uniforms are so much nicer than the modern ones the Old Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers, Miami Dolphins And the Washington REDSKINS We’re so much better than the modern ones don’t care about the Eagles. I hate them with a passion on a cowboy fan and a Miami Dolphins fan. The Eagles can implode for all I care.
