I've followed horse racing since I was a toddler and seen some brilliant animals - Nijinsky, Mill Reef, El Gran Senor, Dancing Brave, See The Stars...etc. The Brigadier is the King of them all.

If Brigadier wouldn't have ran in this race he very possibly would have remained unbeaten.

Brigadier Gerard was a miler pure and simple, but one of the all time greats at that distance. Frankel was the best miler I have ever seen, but Brigadier Gerard was not too far behind.

To be fair , The Brigadier wasn't just a miler , pure and simple . Yes, it was the distance at which he remained unbeaten , but he was just as effective at a mile and a quarter . In fact , he ran in the same amount of ten furlong races as he did a mile . We all know about his defeat against Derby winner , Roberto , at York , when he was found not be 100 per cent that day : his hard race at Ascot prior to that didn't help his cause . The only flaw in Brigadier Gerard's make-up was that he didn't like soft ground - only his sheer class got him home on the two occasions he encountered such conditions .

@@ThefightingCelt Absolutely true, Brigadier Gerard won group one races from 6 furlongs to a mile and a half, definitely wasn't just a pure and simple miler.

Joe Mercer, interviewed after the race, said he felt The Brigadier only got home on his class. I think he was very close to being disqualified after crossing Parnell, who got very close to him at the line. Interestingly, after Frankel won the Juddmonte International there was talk of him running in the Arc, which was dismissed. Like the Brigadier, I think Frankel may have struggled to stay one-and-a-half miles.

Frankel never raced against horses like Mill Reef, Parnell, Roberto . All of whom would have given 7lbs and a beaten to any horse Frankel beat. A dire miler generation.

@@nightowl7459 The Brigadier in his defeat to Roberto ran easily his best 10 furlong race. Look how far Gold Rod and Rheingold were in third and fourth. Also Roberto and the Brigadier broke the track record. Absolutely no excuses for his defeat.

@@justgrand3429 Braking track records don't always mean you have ran your best, it just means that the conditions were there for those records to be achieved, I've seen moderate horse breaking track records, the point I make is that Brigadier Gerard had run a hard mile and a half race only three weeks before he went to York, maybe he just wasn't quite as good has he could have been?

The Brigadier was a brilliant miler but not so brilliant at 10 furlongs. He was almost beaten in his first Champion Stakes, only beat Riverman by a length or so in his second Champion Stakes. His most impressive win at 10 furlongs was easily the Prince of Wales Stakes. Mill Reef would have beaten him comfortably at 10 furlongs. The Brigadier has in my opinion always been overated.

"In my opinion"? Everyone is entitled to have his own opinion, but an opinion requires facts, evidence, logic and context - at least - otherwise it is just bibble-babble. Without evidence, you are contradicting Timeform ratings, which were developed over many decades and employing a host of factors, including, but limited to, weights, type of race, times, going, draw, way the race was run, etc. On top of many factors was the racing judgement of many experts. I have watched countless horse races and countless football matches, but that of itself does not entitle me to denigrate the views and opinions of real experts.
