Do they still build econoboxes with that LITTLE power?...I guess they do but any nice midsize or bigger car these days for less money (adjusted for inflation) has that sort of old fashioned wimpy power or more. My OLD econbox 2001 330 has 245 hp, My little 2011 BMW M3 has 414 hp and it's outdated, new ones have a lot more. You need to get out more. hahaha Affordable cars are available today with 500hp.

They convinced me. I will pay $170 more and buy a Dodge Demon!

Very, very few people were swingers back then. Same with the so called 'free love' sixties. Didn't happen. That was only in a few cities and college campuses. At the time, something like 70% of girls were still virgins when they got married, and most of the others had only had sex with one guy, usually the guy they ended up marrying.

They did have a couple of advantages in deep snow, though - most passenger cars back then had better ground clearance than even most 'cuvs' or 'suvs' these days, let alone today's ground-hugging passenger cars; and cars had thinner tires which cut through snow easier and increase pressure on the footprint (for more snow traction).

Heavy means a more stable ride, especially on the highway and in high crosswinds, and more safety in collisions (all other things being equal). Yes, it's bad for handling, acceleration, and terrible for economy, brake wear and tire wear, but there are two sides to the coin.

Maverick top engine was a 210 hp 302. Ran the 1/4 mile in 16.2, that's with a 2 bbl, single exhaust, and crappy gears. Put the Mustang drivetrain in it and it would run circles around the top of the line demon

@@charliekiger No.... The Demon is a submodel of the Dart. Technically it was a Dart Demon, which is an a-body. Chargers (of this era) were b-bodies, and Challengers were e-bodies.

I had a 73 Duster. I miss that ole rust bucket. She always got me home no matter what issues came up. And easy to fix.

Now its more money for the next smaller engine because that has a turbo strapped on for more power. And then its how many more turbos on the same engine. 170cid is about the size of the alfa giulia v6 with over 500 net bhp and rated at over 30 us mpg.

Bought a new Demon with the 318 ,ordered it in Vietnam.

Got to buy 30 cans of black undercoating and spray coat the bottom when new add another 10 years on before starts to rot out the floor boards that's what the truck drivers in Toronto Ontario Canada did 30 years ago then put shackles on the rear leaf springs so the rear end was jacked up and then painted the differenal rear end flouresnt orange

In those days, in these economy cars, there was hardly any luxury. So a heavier car meant thicker steel, bigger axles, and stronger engines and gearboxes. Extra weight went into the hardware of the car. It sounds funny today, but that phrase was valid back then

Gotta say I like the Maverick's style better. It was designed of a piece, where the Duster had been a rebody to fit the existing Valiant nose while the facelift Dart nose was done in another studio. But everything else...I'd have hit the Ford salesman up for a Maverick promo model and then bought a Duster/Demon (which one would depend on prices and equipment at the dealers).

Back when rubber mats were a selling point :-)

The Oil Embargo & Even/Odd days in 1973-1974 were sea changes for the American Auto industry. That's explains why Ford did well with the Pinto. Even into the '80's the public sacrificed safety for economy. Explains why even Le Car had a following. Sadly, Detroit just wasn't nimble. Toyota & Honda owe their beginning to the Energy Crisis. Yet American Auto could compete. Remember AMC? Interestingly, 2000 saw $1.01 regular & the SUV took off. Now even ad oil prices lower, TESLA & e cars grow!

Now that's VALUE!

I had a 1972 Dodge Dart Demon. Unfortunately, it was just the sticker package version as it came equipped with a 225 slant six. It was very reliable, never broke down, but it went through motor mounts like crazy!

I honestly preferred the look of the Maverick. The trunk looks overly long IMO on the dodge and front end looks busy. Other then that its a nice car IMO.. Both sweet cars though! I own a 70 maverick and my buddy owns a late 70s Duster.

40-cents might seem cheap, but the minimum wage in 1972 was $1.60; I made $333/month as an E3 in the army. Adjusted for inflation, gas is cheaper now than its every been.

The Maverick's standard 3-speed transmission is fully synchronized in all forward gears. The Demon's three-on-the tree has synchro only on the top two.

You’ve got to love the guy on the far left in the slide starting around 0:20 who looks like a movie star with that huge collar and some kind of scarf application on his neck. Lol.

I had both back in the day. I thought both where basically nice cars. '72 Demon with 225 six auto, gold with black side stripes and cream color vinyl seats interior. '74 Maverick green with 200 six auto, green cloth seats. I sold the Demon when I was issued a company car, the new owner promptly rolled and totalled it. The doors rusted off the maverick and it was junked. The maverick had one irritating habit of throwing on full choke at any time and killing the engine. The thing with the demon was the slant six mechanical valve lifters made noise.

Had a Plymouth duster. And own a Maverick!

The rubber trunk mat sold me !! Got to find my time machine quickly !!

My sister had a base model 71' Dodge Demon 6 cylinder my dad bought her (used) for her 1st car. Clearly, that was the worse and most dangerous car I ever drove when I got my license. My dad bought 71 Ford Maverick for my mother. I don't know which one was worse, I never drove it - my brother totaled it. I wish I could drove/owned my dad's 65 Ford Galaxie 500.

Go the easy way. Buy a used VW beetle and pick up a hippy chick.

My Dad did this comparison in 1972. Neither car had the leg room he expected to need with teenage sons. He bought a Saab 99. A much better interior design, it had more legroom than the bigger Dart/Valiant. And fuel injection, front wheel drive and 1 HP / cubic inch. It handled well, where as other family Dart's just were good for tire screeching when trying to stop.

@@CJColvin mechanically , yeah. Expensive electronic fuel injectors. seat adjusters, trunk hinges. Drive chain. PITA stuff. But the Saab made it close to 200,000 w/o rusting out. The wife's Dart needed floor repair by 100,000 miles.

I wish I had a 340 Demon today; My buddy bought a lime green one about 7 years ago for $13K. We were still fishtailing at 100 mph in 3rd gear and that car was a rocket ship! He sold it back to the guy he got it from 2 years later for $15K and used the money for a late model Mustang GT.

We had a '72 Maverick. Great 200 but should have disconnected the high gear vacuum sensor. Still, a trip from Ca to Wa in '81 with 4 adults and a trunk full of luggage was a blast. Over 26 mpg from what i remember.

They had to drop the Demon name; way too satanic....[roll eyes] But what were they thinking when they named a car, "Swinger?" Goes both ways?

I had the Duster 340, same car. But I always like the Demon's tail lights and logo. After they dropped the Demon name, they just resurrected Dart Sport

American Motors which was formed with the merger of Nash and Hudson resurrected the Hudson model name Hornet. Another former Hudson name was being considered, "Wasp." But they realized the name had somewhat negative connotations, particularly to minorities and perhaps liberals. Studebaker came out with a "Dictator" around the time that Hitler was coming to power. The few examples that were exported were relabeled, "Director."

Polaroid named a camera "swinger." But it was a Polaroid so I guess that made sense somehow.

They took a lot of flack for the 'Demon' nameplate. It was changed to 'Dart Sport'.

I'd get a Maverick. Because it will use less gas because I feel a oil embargo coming on.

I am 66 now and enjoy watching the cars and commercials that were around when i was a teenager as well as those PRETTY models and their attire, don't see legs like that now too often if at all

I remember 1972. I was in high school. By then we could see that the performance era was no longer with us. Power was dropping like a rock and it was illegal to modify engines on the newer cars. At that time that we had no reason to think horsepower would ever return. It took over a decade to even begin to come back.

Love it or hate it (I’m a mopar guy but a demon? No!) I miss the days of the “big three” with American Motors right behind with some great cars.

Obviously the dude from 'No country for old men' saw the value proposition of getting the 340 with four on the floor

I really liked Mavericks, but, we bought a Pinto, it was just loaded with options, but the Maverick would have been a better choice. I have a Demon 340.

My dad had a guy in the Goodyear factory where he worked make up some shackles for my Maverick so i could fit some E-60s in the back with chrome reverse wheels! Loved the fastback style too.

Early mavericks I liked.....but both got porch bumpers that ruined the styling on later yeared cars.......that girl is wicked fine too

It was easy enough to go to the junkyards and pick up the minimalist bumpers and replace those railroad tie '5mph' ones.

I am sold! Only $2.70 more per month to drive a demon🙌💲

I didn’t know electronic ignition in the 70’s. I always thought it appeared in the 80’s

Id like to see a commercial like this in the modern era. One automaker bashing another competing car to oblivion lol.

It is interesting that the Demon has a 5 inch longer wheelbase than the Maverick. Usually this translates to more interior room, but the Demon has less rear seat legroom. They don't give the actual dimensions or differences, so based on this we'd have to conclude that the extra wheelbase and length are all in the trunk.

Back when I bought my first car in 1985, a 6 cylinder Maverick in very good shape was about 600-900. I thought I was smart buying an old Japanese car, I think a Maverick in good shape that an older person owned with simple technology would've been much better.

"They want to swing a little". Well, damn!

The Demon is a car that would still be modern today in every way except for air bags which could be added. Very nice style and good size car. Blows the Maverick away.

7:00 the front wheels were really spaced 2 inches further apart than the rear wheels. This made the car look incredibly stupid, but you were able to put wider rims on the back with no rubbing problems.

Maverick's fuel tank was just in front of the rear bumper. The Chrysler's placed the tank ahead of the rear axle. A hit from behind could easily rupture the Ford tank, not so the Dodge.

The guy in this filmstrip looks a lot like Kelso from "That 70s Show."

The Maverick LDO 302 was a great car.

This is like a commercial for stoners that can't decide to either get pizza or just go to McDonald's
