Good work! This is what I am looking to do on my tank.

Get a quote from a radiator shop too, this process using vinegar took a week. Turned out great though, total cost was about half of what a rad shop would charge me at the time.

@@atombawm i did get a quote from one shop and it was a bit of money and they would take a bit to do it so doing it myself like how you did it is starting to look good. Luckily this isn't my daily driver so having the car down for a bit isn't a big deal. My biggest issue is getting good replacement hoses as OEM ones aren't available anymore.

Hoses and grommets i got were from several sources, z car depot, the z store and datsun garage. They were kind of expensive, not braided oem style but they worked great.

@@atombawm Unfortunately for me my car is a 510 wagon and those suppliers don't have some of the parts like hoses but can get the sending unit from Z car depot or even the dealer but have to modify it to match the wagon model. The hoses I'll have to go to a parts store and try to match up the filler hose. The vent hoses shouldn't be a big deal as those have a standard shape.

Now thats how you restore an old crusty fuel tank! Looks like new after you finished and will likely last longer than factory! The sealer would likely also seal small pinholes too! Larger pinholes can be tack welded then sealed. Great video!

Nice video, thank you.. End product looks great inside. I was planning on sending my tank out, but you inspired me to give this a shot first. My tank is spitting crud into the fuel pump filter, but maybe it won't look too bad once I get it off the car and take a peak inside.

Im glad you liked it, the cheapest place i found gallons of vinegar at was at a big pharmacy chain (walgreens or RiteAid) and i got the POR15 fuel tank sealer at a local napa auto parts store, follow the instructions on the can and you should be all set. I filter and re-use the vinegar on rusty steel until it stops working. Lasts a while.

@@atombawm Hey thanks again. Once question: how did you insure the tank sealer didnt clog/block any of the lines?

  • @atombawm

@@avalonsocialclub great question! So the sealer is actually quite runny when its first applied, just make sure you roll the tank around making sure its evenly coated on all surfaces and in the lines. There will be excess coating thatll need to be dumped out but before i emptied the excess I removed the tape from the vents and lines and made sure it was passing through those areas. When it dries it ends up being a thin film but its very hard. In my experience, it didnt glob up enough to block any tubes or vents and worked out great.

Alright sounds good. There will be more Z videos, i will have to weld in some repair panels and do suspension and brake work. Eventually a full rebuild of the engine.

that wasnt the fuel pump with the float on it was it? did you replace it or clean up and put on a new O-ring. great job, my son and I about to tackle this. 1976 280Z 2+2

It was the fuel level sending unit, i did just clean it up and reinstall with a new o-ring, after inspection i found it to be satisfactory. The 72 it was being installed on still has the original style mechanical fuel pump. I appreciate the feedback! Means a lot :)

This definitely helped! I’m so gonna try this soon! I see that you’re also from WA, so I had a question, how’d you go about getting those plates? I definitely want to follow suit.

Im glad it helped! Be sure to get a quote from your local radiator shop before spending a week doing the budget restoration on it. Those plates are actually the original plates for that car. DMV will honor them the same as collector plates.

Evaporust is more effective and bio degrade able vinager is weak. Looks good still

I also use evaporust (i love and promote that stuff) but $80 for 5 gallons wasn't cost effective for this budget restoration. Vinegar was $1.50 per gallon and although its slower, it shares the same eco friendly attributes. I appreciate the feedback! Let me know if theres anything in particular you would like to see.
