I owned a 1970 AMX 390 Go Pack! What a machine! If only....I had it now. I bought it for $1,200.00 in 1972. I have had many cars since then (I am 68 now) but none have been near as fun as that one.

Been an AMC fan since 1968, as I bought new a 1968 AMX. 343 go pac with auto and 3.15 rear gears. The 343 had so much locked up potential. In 1971 changed cam to the factory stock type 2 or what was then called "the white stripe" cam. More lift and greater duration over the 343 cam. Edlebrock R4B intake with larger Carter 9625 carb. Cyclone exhaust headers through 2 1/2 in. full exhaust. Big difference was rear gear change, going from 3.15 to 3.73 gears. In the day, raced a 1970 AMX with go pac, 390 , 4-speed and 3.54 rear gears. Could not beat the AMX, but stayed next to him all the way till we quit. The 343 was making almost the same horsepower. My problem, as was with the 1969 SC Rambler as well, was not getting enough traction with the 14 in. tires. That little 343 engine sure made a believer out of me.

The engine's outer dimensions are small. It's a small big block . The 390 - 401 are good to around 650 + hp with rods, pistons, valve train upgrades,4 bolt main kit, anything higher that is expected to live requires a lot of specialized components. The engine is capable of 1000 +hp with a turbo, but it wouldn't last very long.

My 1967 American with a transplanted drivetrain from a totaled 1968 Javelin fooled many mainstream muscle cars back in the very early 1970's. We used to call it the glow factor. Because you felt so warm inside when you smacked a Camaro or Mustang because you knew they were pissed getting beat by a Rambler. 343 with a little headwork. Edelbrock intake with a 650 dual line double pumper. Crane cam, Schiefer clutch, 3.54 gears, Lakewood slapper traction bars because of the horrible wheel hop without them. Had to have the driveshaft shortened because the Javelin had a 109- inch wheelbase whereas the American had a 106 -inch wheelbase. Local machine shop connected to a speedshop did the headwork and the driveshaft for me.

Or come clashing down on the AMC production,or you but i think honestly Chevy,Ford and Dodge's had AMC's number on the strip i don't know how many times, but that's just stating the truth!! All i was truly saying before is the 72 Chevelle being the slowest years of the Chevelle's,it's still a quick heavy car on the strip, not being against just anything AMC!!

@@CamaroZ-cr9bo they aren't even in the same class. Still says nothing about the Chevies, Fords, or Dodges. I'm saying that it wasn't even a good match up to have a big block vs a small block and doesn't prove anything about the Chevelle except that a big block beat a small block. Absolutely nothing revelatory there. The AMCs had everyone else's number in the Trans Am races and kicked all their asses. This drag race doesn't prove anything.

@@NeuKrofta @NeuKrofta Well you know a comment and a discussion is exactly what you want it to be!! Evidently you're looking for a clash of opinions all because i said a bone stock 72 SS is still a dam good running heavy car off of the line, and it is and was!! I wasn't looking for you to hate what i said!! But because you do you act like you have something to do about it,like you have somethung to prove!! I don't and i still don't!!...but now that you brought this idea up to me,i'm the one who's right only because you mentioned what's not even imoortant!!...And say what!?...The Chevelle's like 300lbs heavier, probably has an automatic transmission, who knows what rear end!! It still took that race on low compression!!...With all of the disadvantages!! And are you sure a 390's considered a small and not a big!? you moght be right and with certain manufacturers the size ranges differ by big or small!! But yiu're wrong on another thing, small blocks might have smaller heads than big but it'll tell you what big and small isn't everything in performance!!...I hope you figured that out,i did!!....Now let me enter your part of the discussion here to compare the cars, that AMX has every advantage for weight, having a 4 speed etc!!...Having a displacement of a small block as big as 390 considered and that's all it has, plus probably has the high compression ratio of a 1970 car still, more power lighter body and still couldn't win!!...Even a better rear end and couldnt beat it,i really don't care but on your level i'm only being as specific as yourself!!....And as for what a 401 vs that Chevelle!? a 1970 high compression might beat it,but for a 72 401 against that Chevelle, who was better that year!! Now hold on hold on,compare low compression to low compression, high emissions vs high emissions!!...Keep the categories close right!? Big block or small block isn't important all the time even in drag racing,a high compression small block should still beat a low compression big block, haven't you figured that out!? Why's it like i'm the only one who knows anything around here!!....a big blocks have advantages and so do small blocks have a light weight advantage from the go!!...If A 401 low compression engine can or can't hang with that Chevelle it's intersting,i don't follow AMC's but if 401's git reduced compression like the 454 has i think that Chevy might take it!!...But this red one here had alot more advantages than disadvantages this race!!....It's really not important to me but i think you're wrong and i think i could prove it if i wanted to,do the math man,i mean seriously you either act like you don't know much about cars and like you don't know what topics or comments are even worth the fuss about!! Trans Am series!? well i'm not talking about the Trans Am series i was talking about AMC on the drag strips!!....and i may not know if AmC had a 401 available in 72 or if it was most likely a low compression engine like that Chevelle is but i'd bet if it is that chevelle would take it!!....At least the odd's are equal, big block vs big block in your eyes!? You got me curious now about cars i don't follow, but it Javelins were made in 72 i wonder hiw well they do!! In that year especially!! Probably not much better even after your insults thrwn in there!! Alll i see is a debate between a red and blue crayon, one stated he likes how a stock chevy drives, the other thinks i was asking for a dispute like i was looking for one!! And i don't care if it was a Honda Civic that Chevelle ran against,i still said i like how that 72 Chevelle still has good low end with it's heavy body and low compression 270hp big 8!! I do like that car, after i leave i still will!! Do you anything you'd like to say about this!? I wasn't talking about the Trans Am series i was talking about the dragstrip and the car in general!! Not you from the start truthfully!! What are you like 16 or something!?

Odd - in the bonus footage of the AMX racing a GTO, the AMX had a quicker time than against the Chevelle, but a lower trap speed. I would think that the quicker time would also give a faster speed at the end. As close as the race was, I doubt that the AMX eased up on the throttle at the end.

That Chevelle belongs to a man named Clark if I am not mistaken. Super nice guy, helped me with my car through DMs a few times. He's owned it since the early 80s. I am surprised it was only 3788lbs... my car is optioned similar, but I have manual windows and locks and A/C. I am about 185lbs at "race weight." If my car comes in at anything under 4000 lbs with fuel and driver - I'll be very happy.

401 Started in 1971. Bored 390. Interestingly the 1970 390 is a bit of a Unicorn....it's the taller deck block used from 1970 until around 1991 (Grand Wagoneer -360)....but it was the only year for the 390 in that block casting. Previous 390s were shorter deck blocks and did not use the dog leg heads. 1971 401 - 330HP Gross, except for Rebel Machine which was 340HP. The "Race" AMX was the 1969 Hurst SS AMX. There were 52 made by Kar Kraft in Michigan. All 390's...although some of them had 1970 Grilles added. Most (if not all) had the 390 Cross Ram, Dual Quad intake. four-oh-one....say it with me! Can I get a witness?!

Back in 1972, I was looking at an AMX at a local AMC dealership; my mistake was having the old man along. We took it out for a test drive and got out of the real busy section of the road. Well, old dad, he wanted to see how it did for passing cars. Of course, I didn't want to, as I knew what that puppy had. He insisted, and of course I had to obey (he was going to help me with a down payment). WELL! I did, and he made me turn around and bring it back to the dealer. No sale; he was sure I would get a ticket for speeding or (the horror) street racing. I probably would have. Oh well.
