1972 BMW R75/5 Cold Start

Starting up the old 1973 BMW R75/5! I haven’t ridden it in months so it took a little caressing to start. It’s definitely a different machine compared to other bikes. Kind of like riding an old VW Beetle. It’s fun yet reliable power.

Danke! It sounds much better now. I’ll need to do a more recent video of it.

That is the way to ride a BMW R 75/5. Take it easy and enjoy the ride. I ride around Europe with mine for 25 years. I sold it when it was very tired and needed a complete overhaul. I got exactly the same price for it when sold it as I bought it in 1978. This was a 1973 model, a trusty work horse I still miss.

It’s a great riding and running bike. Easy to maneuver so it makes for a confident ride. I need to post another video as it’s riding and running way better now.

I’m glad to read she’s firing up like a champ now. I always crack the throttle and keep it open (as opposed to on/off) when I hit the starter and it works great on the cold starts. That was a lovely ride too :)

It’s such a great bike. Now that I have the R18 I don’t ride it much anymore except quick rides around town.

I had one just like that, toaster orange tank! It was a great bike but like yours was tough to start on cold mornings. I often had to kick start it.

Ooh love the orange toasters! The green and orange colors are harder to find these days. We have done some tweaks and this one starts a lot better. Also found that humidity has a lot to do with struggled starts. And the battery needs a recharge every once in awhile. 👍

These stops signs were just in a local neighborhood that I know has no traffic. In higher traffic areas I definitely stop and make sure no one is coming.

You have to synchronize the Carburstors. You can hear it but even see it in the shaking of the bike (idle). One cylinder runs stronger than the other. But a beautiful one. Greetings from Germany

On the list of things to do. When I got the bike it only ran on one cylinder. Little improvements over time.

Got an r60/5 with 800er kit from the r80. This thing runs now. Another worry is your oil pressure light. It should be orange and below the red light. The light for the neutral light on the left should be green. The red light is the charging current.

@@RiJonny yeah, I’m pretty sure there is a short in the cluster as some lights choose to work when they want. The neutral comes on only sometimes so I have to go by feel and sound and not trust the light until I can get it fixed. We drove 150 miles on it last week, and it ran great. Can only imagine how well it will run when I get all the kinks fixed. Lol.

@@MotherMotos I guess he means the hard starting. 50f shouldn't give you such a hard time starting. Imagine, you only had a kickstarter. That kind of a hard start would be totally unacceptable. If in good shape, a couple of kicks should do it. ✌️

Tip.......adjust choke back by half after first fire. Tip 2.......airheads like to go as soon as started. Don't let them sit and idle.
