Richard Petty did really good with the Plymouth Satellite body in the early to mid 70's he was a force battling David Pearson in those Mercury's. I was watching him win races while racing his Petty 43 Plymouth against Pearson's # 21 Mercury on my AFX slot track. They were awesome days to be a kid pretending to be your hero. Back when NASCAR's actually were more close to a car you could actually buy from your local dealer.

To be honest the Torino 500 styling is actually pretty nice

Ford Torino was a good looking car that year, but Plymouth Satellite beat everything else in it's class for styling and features. When you go to car shows now, nobody glaces twice at the Torinos from this era but everyone still stares long and hard at the unbelievably great styling of the Satellite. Everything Chrysler was designing during the fuselage/'coke bottle' inspired years has really stood the test of time as some of the most beautiful of all car styling.

I've owned Fords, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Dodges and Plymouths since getting my License in 1973. MOPAR's have proven by far to be the best when it comes to engines and drivetrains. Hands down, THEE BEST by far. That said, GM and Ford interiors and other accoutrements beat MOPAR across the board. There will always be "Chevy Guys", "Ford Guys" and MOPAR Guys. It is all personal preference. Other statistics don't really matter. If you like it, it is best for YOU. That's true of art, music AND cars and trucks. If you don't like the way it drives you could watch sales pitches all day long and it won't change your mind... I love watching these nostalgic videos!

Having owned a lot of cars from the Big 3 myself I think GM made the most reliable and long lasting cars. Chrysler had the best styling overall, and Ford, well, they were just there. It is funny that I am most loyal to Ford because of their great racing history.

@@Jay-vr9ir Mercedes and Lexus are money pits when they age. I put a starter on a V8 Lexus and had to charge the man 1700 because of the location of it which was under the intake. The car had 118k which isn't that great for today.

I miss these old Mopar station wagons.

Say what you want about the Torino. My parents bought a brand new one in 1972 and drove it for years. It was a gas hog at a time when the Arab oil embargo sent gas prices skyrocketing. But it certainly proved itself years later when we were T-boned in a car accident when some knot head ran a red light and punched us in the side about 30 mph. We all walked out of it, having worn only the lap seat belts. The driver in the Monte Carlo, and his passenger, both left the accident in an ambulance. If I remember correctly my Dad was able to drive the Torino home after the crash.

The Satellite grill is hands-down the best for 71' In 72' Ford's Gran Torino rocked! I remember a ride I had in a 70' Torino wagon that was fun cause it had the 351 Cleveland engine fun times. 😎

At least these 2 cars looks a million times better than anything you see on the road today.

Man I just love the look of these old mopars. The late 60's and early 70's were the times when men had large sideburns, women wore turtle neck sweaters,and everyone was driving big giant American land yachts.

Those 74-77 Gran Fury Pursuits were great, but unfortunately in those days un appreciated because two door hard top was 'the thing'. Unity model 225 spot lights were the icing on the cake.

My first car was a 1971 Road Runner with a 383, my folks had the 1971 Satellite Sebring with a 318, and it handled better then my car on mountain roads but my car had the Air Grabber hood and talk about night and day with it opened to closed, I traded it for a 1973 340 'cuda and talk about a great handling car, had power and maneuverability over the boat anchored 383 Runner, but I'd give my eye teeth to get another 71 Runner!

Ive had 3 different torinos. And they werr some great cars!! Wish i had one today!!

Both cool but the Torino was sharp looking.

I bought a '71 Torino 500 with 70K miles on it for $375 in 1979; senior year of high school. I thought it looked good but it was SLOW with the 302 and got horrible gas mileage. I always had electrical problems like not starting. Since it was heavy in the front and light in the rear i beat the hell out of it when it was running and laid rubber everywhere. BT's, neutral slaps, even throwing the car in reverse at 55 mph making big "W"'s in the street with rubber. Doing doughnuts was a blast. I always bought used snow tires and would go thru 1-2 sets a week. I can't believe the motor and especially the trans took all that abuse. I sold it for $200 a year later to another kid but it only lasted him a few weeks. Been into Mopar's ever since but have lost count on how many electrical components and ballast resistors i have replaced over the years. Most trouble free old car i ever owned was a '70 Cutlass Supreme. Sold that in 2003 after 13 years and the frame rusted thru. Wish i had a '71 Satellite now. I'd make it into a GTX or Roadrunner clone on the outside even if it had the slant 6 under the hood.

I just guessed Dyno Don; I may have only been going 50 or 60 when i held the accelerator to the floor and slammed the trans from R to D. I did it hundreds of times.

garth locklin You know the Ford 302 Windsor V8 is a very reliable engine. I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 with 204,400 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since.

Definitely take either one.

I bought a Grand Torino fastback new in 1973, but if i was to buy a car in 1971 i would have bought the Plymouth in a heartbeat over the torino ///////////////// I did not like the front of the 73 Plymouth so i got the Torino. But now after all these years the front of the Plymouth is growing on me but i still like the 1971 more.

The much better looking Torino GT is not shown. It had a sleek fastback roofline and engines up to 429.

Love the Satellite.

I know I am in the minority, but I always thought "daisy dukes" 71 road-runner, with the looped bumper, and swoopy lines looked better than the General lee.

I got so I carried those stupid ceramic things (ballasts) in my glove box for my 66 and 68 Dodge pickups. For my 73 Galaxie it was a extra starter relay; if you left the lights on and ran the battery down it would ruin Ford's relays. They all had their faults and failings I guess.

mine did the same thing would cause it to under charge at idle and over charge off idle and I took one out of a wrecking yard car when I was buying something else I needed and wouldn't normally buy a wrecking yard voltage regulator but this was a original part from Chrysler and the two before that were new it worked exactly like it was supposed to meaning the parts house ones were defective I thought I was missing something in my diagnosis

The Plymouth has an all new round steering wheel, where as the Ford has an unsightly circular steering wheel from the previous year.

I like em both...

My first new car was the 1971 Ford Torino 500 Spring Promotion Edition. Brown with racing strips and inside color coded interior gold with color coded striped hubcaps. 20 years old at the time and people thought I was rich and really gave me many compliments about it. Wonder what happened to it. It could really squeal with not really trying. Put Michelin tires on it and was perfect. I wonder what happened to it. Would love to have another driven by a little old lady.

Foco I bought my first new car at age 20 also ///// It was a 1973 Grand Torino Sport Fastback. I paid $ 3,600. It had ps, pb, am-fm, 351c, automatic, bench seat with armrest, no ac, no power windows. That was a great price (my wifes uncle had a Ford dealership )

1971 Satellite Sebring Plus: Strong V8 engines, bulletproof TorqueFlite transmission and beautiful styling. However, stalling due to carburetor problems, indifferent build quality, squeaks/rattles and susceptibility to rust override the positives.

Seems like they should have compared sportsroof torino to satellite - they also fail to mention sportsroof body style was significantly different than sedan.

the satellite is also way more collectible today.. ..very expensive

All 2 dr B bodies 71-79 used this 115 inch platform. And all 4 dr B bodies 71-78 used the 117.

The '71-78 Charger-Magnum-Coronet, '77-78 Monaco, the '77-78 Fury, and the first-generation Chrysler Cordoba, but who's counting? Styling details and axle ratio options changed, but the underpinnings stayed the same.

​@@5610winston And the 1979-81 R-Bodies are effectively just these B-bodies with squared up styling in a futile attempt to take on the downsized new for 1977 GM full sizers and the downsized new for 1979 Ford Panthers while only having a tenth of the budget. They actually did a pretty good job with them and I think they were killed way too soon. The first model year was kind of a mess from a reliability standpoint; but, they were fundamentally the same thing Chrysler had been building for almost twenty years by that point so they probably would've gotten good just in time for the large car market to recover. Instead while Ford and GM were making bank in the mid-late 80s with LTDs, Caprices, and tarted up versions thereof; Mopar had to shill a guzzied up Volare, the M-Body, as a full size police cruiser, family car for traditionalists, and/or luxury barge.

My preference in cars can be summed up in only one word: Detroit.

Did anyone notice at 5.41 the finish inside the doors on both cars? I saw an interview with Lee Iaccoca and he was saying that yes the cars they made in the 70's were crap and they got punished for it. I'd still have one though:}

+67marlins I wouldn't doubt that at all mate. Here in Australia in the 70's Chrysler, Ford and General Motors Holden made cars that had drive trains based on US designs that went forever. General assembly standards were a bit ordinary at times but they never quit. Things have changed but. I bought a new American made Jeep, now I have the best of both worlds. Reliable drive train and a very high standard of finish.

Not totally, Parker. My Dad got over 500,000 documented miles from our 77 Ford, and I drove my '70 over 250,000, to be honest.

I know that woman in the thumbnail! She's from Planet Claire.

If both cars were the size of a Stang or Camaro, they would have been perfect and likely sold many more!

I had a1974 Plymouth Satellite Custom back in 1991. I was handed down to me. It packed a 318. And drove like a dream. Miss it dearly. Ben looking at one tucked behind a factory in a lot covered in weeds. Thinking about trying to get it. But trying to rationalize the purchase of a not desired car that I could dump money and time into so for what??? So can fill my Nostalgia craving. Other people probably like the car is much is I did still think why didn’t you do it to a road runner are such what. So that’s why I hesitate

That settles it for me, I'm heading to the dealership to buy a Fiat Satellite asap. Does anyone else know that an Italian company now owns Dodge?

An alternator gauge could be compared to an engine's temperature gauge, where the driver can monitor the operation of the alternator and voltage regulator. If the alternator, or voltage regulator, is failing, the needle on the gauge would show that. But, on most cars for the past 50 years, they were, instead, equipped with an "idiot light" that would glow red when the alternator or voltage regulator was failing.

I prefer the Torino's body style.

I liked the seats in the Torinos and the leg room in the front seats but the back seats had very little leg room. I never been in a Satelite but I know several people who have owned them and a couple that still own them. They seem to be very reliable cars. I had a 72 and a 76 Torino and 76 Mercury Cougar XR7. I love the way they drove and handled but my big bicker about all three were getting them started in the winter time and keeping them running. I literally had a starter explode while trying to start my 76 Cougar.

So I take it GM was superior than both cars?

Torino is sharper.

1970 was a turning point for Chrysler. They peaked in 1969 in terms of styling, with the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda probably being the only standouts. This Satellite, for instance, is ugly as hell. I don’t know why they were so gung ho on loop bumpers. Downright ugly.

Anything but a Chrysler The quality just isnt there....and it was sorta embarrasing to be seen in a Chrysler..... Ill Take The Ford.
