1971 Jacques Tati - "Trafic" (highlights)

Фильм және анимация

Jacques Tati's last feature film started as a collaboration with Dutch director Bert Haanstra. They were friends and their work had much in common, but the collaboration turned out to be so troublesome that Haanstra decided to leave the production.
The final film contains many subtle sight gags from one of the great masters of the genre.

Appreciate your efforts in sharing a bit of the genius that was Jacques Tati. With your editing, I noticed something I'd never noticed before in my MANY viewings of "Traffic". When all the minions return to their cars at the end of the day you can see the "rain" being sprayed in from the top left of the screen. I wish I could un-see something...

This little compilation of favourite highlights and sight gags is by no means intended to represent "the core of Tati's vision". Please feel free to illuminate us with your knowledge of this core. We most certainly will go and watch anything else.

Mr. Bean brought me here. I find these pieces interesting but I feel stupid because I don’t understand the messages, or are they random sketches to simply entertain in the art of silence?

I would rather say that his films are more emotional than thoughtful. Usually I think he mocks people who see progress and technology as fashion, lifestyle or even goals - as opposed to optional tools. But it would be incorrect to say that his films are about that. They are rather about the fun of being and the fun of watching people and things be what they are.

Yes, Doonbuggy, these clips are very random when compared to how Tati constructed his visual humour. You need to watch his films from start to finish. He was a master at drawing his jokes out. The visual joke would begin with a setup. The film might then go to another part of the story altogether. It would come back to the build-up later and then go to the time-line of one of the other visual jokes he was building. The punch line often came much later in the film. These jokes were all interwoven and had cleverly exaggerated sound effects. If you don't speak French you can easily watch a Tati film without subtitles. In fact it's often better to do that because the subtitles will take your attention away from the visual gags. His films have everything from complex jokes with storylines to simple, one shot, humourous observations of everyday life.

What really made Mr. Bean work was that Atkinson took the basic world view of Jacques Tati and tightened it up into time friendly routines for television. That was a genius move on Atkinsons part. My feeling is that Tati worked at a completely different pace which was counterintuitive to time frames and “selling” of comic gags. So what we get in the end is five perfect films that require the necessary time to let them sink in. I always think of TATI more like a classical composer with a brilliant eye.

All of the above plus Tati's films are gentle, quiet, and he is the master of the observation of human foibles. He is never cruel.
