1970 Subaru 360: A Toy Van For The Street

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s not a shrunken Type 2 VW, but rather an adorable little import built in Japan in an era long before Subaru started to earn its modern granola-crunching and power-sliding fanbase. Sun-soaked Arizona is an altogether alien terrain if you’re arriving from Japan, and as far as U.S. cities go, Greater Phoenix is not wanting for space-certainly not when compared to the tightly-packed streets of Japan’s metropolitan hubs-and a tiny van with an even smaller motor is no way to experience these wide-open desert highways if your version of the American Southwest requires a V8. But traversing the ramps and right angles around the city? This little UFO is quite handy indeed. The Subaru 360 Van is an efficient use of of space and it gets the kind of excellent mileage you’d expect from a barebones and mostly utilitarian machine, and yet its value lies more in its charm than its function.

I had one of these in 1971 when I was 16. Lived in Santa Clara California. Drove it up Highway 9 every weekend to go camping at the beach. Believe it or not my girlfriend and I did sleep in the back. A baby crib mattress fit perfect in the back. We both slept on that together. Awe young love LOL!!!

Luke Skywalker Actually I know very little. What I do know however is that their first car was the 360, and from what I can remember it has a little air cooled, 2-stroke engine - hence the ringa dinga ding dong sound effects *;)* It was only in the later years when Boxer engines became the norm with their different length headers that the car gained it's classic well known deep grumble. Sounds good.

My younger brother had one of these. What a riot to drive ! To drive it to it's maximum ability you had to be very coordinated. 360 CC's had to be used very efficiently to not hold up traffic. I remember the shifter flexing as I shifted. It was a complicated dance, but then the Best always are .

Using my wife's name with pic. Hi Scott thought that looked familiar, especially since are vans paint jobs are almost identical. The van I own was purchased from Ed, the Guru of Subaru's. He and his wife owned it for 40 years and was his daily driver. This is the third van I've owned since my dad gave me my first 360 sedan back about 1980. I love driving it. Only time I got intimidated in it driving on the freeway for 55 miles from Lancaster, CA to Santa Clarita on Christmas day. Slowest speed was 45 and fastest was 70mph thanks to a sedan rear end.
