FOR THE CABBAGE ROLLS
Remember I did not stuff Mine I layered it in a casserole
1 pound ground beef I use 90% lean
1 cup cooked rice
1/2 cup onion finely chopped
1 teaspoon garlic minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Tomato Sauce
1 head cabbage
INSTRUCTIONS
While the sauce is simmering, (Tomato Sauce Mix to taste) assemble the cabbage rolls. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
Immerse the cabbage head in the boiling water. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until cabbage leaves are pliable. Peel 12 large leaves off the cabbage.
Place the ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, in a bowl. Add 1/2 cup of the tomato sauce to the bowl. Stir to combine.
Lay each cabbage leaf on a flat surface. Use a small knife to cut a V-shaped notch to remove the thick part of the cabbage rib.
Shape 1/3 of a cup of the meat mixture into a log shape and place in the center of a cabbage leaf. Roll the cabbage leaf around the meat mixture. Repeat with remaining meat and cabbage leaves.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Coat a 9"x13" pan with cooking spray. Place 1/2 of the tomato sauce in the bottom of the baking dish. Place the cabbage rolls, seam side down, in the dish. Top with remaining sauce.
Cover with foil. Bake for 60-90 minutes or until cabbage is tender and meat is cooked through.

I've done similar but I sautéed the cabbage with the beef and onions. Once cabbage is starting to caramelize I add in the rest of the ingredients. One pan, stove top so not as hot in the house on a warm day.😊

I have done that also. But this looks great and the cabbage doesn’t seem to shrink up as much, perhaps giving more volume to the meal.

I love unstuffed cabbage casserole. We ate that a lot during the summer growing up. Moma would saute the cabbage in bacon grease to soften it and this added flavor to it because she only used one fourth lb of hamburger. There was more cabbage than anything else.

Looks delicious Tessie. I remember mom taking a can of mackerel and making a big pan of biscuits and that was breakfast for our large family. Grandmother had thirteen children and would take a couple or three eggs and make egg gravy in the winter when her chickens weren't laying well. Egg gravy and biscuits filled a lot of bellies. When eggs were gone it would be potato gravy . It all tasted so good and was filling. Have a blessed day friend

I think that would work with a big bag of coleslaw too even if it had a few shredded carrots in it. Coleslaw often goes on sale around holidays in Northern WI. And if you have some hamburger pre fried with onion frozen in ziplocks, you could make this in a few minutes once your rice is cooked. Sometimes my days get busy at clinics with my husband in cancer treatment and a 93 year old mom living with me. Speed meals are wonderful.

Yes please to the under 5 dollar meals. In Australia it would be 12 to 13 dollar with the cheese fir my family of 6 adults with the cheapest ingredients l can find, which is still a very good value! Here a balanced meal under 10 dollar is hard to do... Absolutely love your channel ❤❤

rather than munching on expensive snacks...this recipe is good & easy to reheat the left overs from the frig and micro wave...I add 1 cup of cooked barley to your recipe to make it even better...

Yum! I do look at a books for idea's. But I always do my touches too. Like one thing; My family love mac and cheese. When I am short on time, I get the box of Mac and Cheese. But there is a little trick to make it last a little longer. Also easier to heat up. Box says just boil the water and add noodles. But add a table spoon of vegetable oil, And one shot of salt. Then drain and add cheese, It tastes so much better. Re-heated taste even better. Love ya Tessie, Have a super day!
