I remember one of the greatest comeback games the knicks had, in that era , was against the Bucks. Not sure what year, but they were down about 18 points, late in the 4th quarter, and kept them scoreless the last six minutes to win. Of of the greatest regular season comebacks ever, considering there was no 3 point play back then

Thanks for posting this, Hal15Greer, one of my favorite players from the old days! Incredible game, I remember it like it was yesterday. When Willis Reed came out of the game -- figured Knicks have no chance. What a gutsy performance by the Knicks! Remember Bradley jump shot tying the game at 87 and then another Bradley jump shot gave the Knicks their first lead of the game at 93-91. Talks about the crowd being 6th man!!! What a clutch game Dave Stallworth had. Amazing, the whole thing.

Where to begin? This will always be one of the most exciting games ever played by the NY Knicks. The stakes were huge. Lose and you go back to LA without Reed and down 3-2...season over. That's where the energy came from, both for the team and the crowd. I was a young kid listening to the great Marv Albert on AM radio and, as you can tell from this clip, he made the game even more exciting. Hal15Greer, you have unearthed one of the true gems of New York basketball history. Thank you.

DAVE STALLWORTH was the catalyst. ALL-American at Wichita State Univ. he avg. 24pts and 11reb in the old Missouri Valley Conference. Knicks drafted him 1966 avg. 13 pts 7 reb as rookie. Didn't play for 2 years bc of heart condition. Came back in time to get a chip, then traded to Baltimore for Earl Monroe. Dave is one of the forgotten men on that first Knick championship. People remember Willis and Clyde in game 7 but without Dave's effort in game 5 there would not have been a game 7. Knicks brought him back for 7 games in 1975 so he could retire a Knick.

  • @Evan3457

    @Evan3457

    3 жыл бұрын

@@bobscott7440 You're both correct. This game was the crisis the Knicks had to solve to become champions. When Reed got hurt, they were already down 12 in the 1st quarter. They tried Bowman. He couldn't do anything. They tried either Hosket or May, I forget which, and that didn't work, either. They were down 13 at the half. They knew Willis wouldn't be able to play the 2nd half. On the fly, Holtzman and his players worked out the 1-3-1 offense they would use to score without a center, and they put Stallworth and DeBusschere on Chamberlain in shifts. Neither one could do much more with Wilt than lean on him a bit. They were lucky in that Chamberlain was not fully mobile after knee surgery had put him on the shelf for much of the season. And they pressed, harassed and trapped the Lakers into something like 30 turnovers. And they kept coming and coming and coming. In the end the Lakers folded, and the Knicks won going away by 7. I was 10 years old, listening on WHN-1050 AM to Marv Albert's masterwork call. I'm 50 years older now, and the memory of that night remains evergreen to me. The "Miracle on 33rd Street" would not have been complete if they hadn't won game 7. But they had 3 full days to try to get Willis ready to play. He promised he would play, "...if I have to play on one leg". They had the home crowd roaring behind them, a virtual sixth man. Willis took the horse needle; multiple shots in the leg were needed before they could hit the correct nerve to deaden the pain enough to let him play remotely effectively. He came out late for warmups. The Lakers were so distracted, they stopped their warmups watch Willis go through his pre-game routine. They psyched themselves out when he appeared more-or-less normal. He came out and hit the first two shots of the game, one from each side. Frazier took over and played one of the greatest all-around games in basketball history, and the Game 7 rout was on. But this game, game 5, the Knicks had to figure it all out in the heat of battle. Game 7 gets almost all the credit and fame, but game 5 was the "eye of the needle". In my mind, still the greatest game in Knicks history.

The Knicks in that era had the best defense in the league-- arguably the best team-oriented defense in NBA history. They were relentless- constantly pressing and causing turnovers and bad shots. They didn't make it easy for the Lakers to move the ball except around the perimeter. It's obvious in this film how much Chamberlain is favoring his bad knee. It looks as if he doesn't trust it yet. Nowadays they'd never let a star player play in this condition. Walt Frazier said that he watched Chamberlain when they started the series to see whether Wilt was jumping quickly or "winding up" (I don't recall the actual term used, but it was essentially that) for his jumps, and he was still "winding up" and not yet back to proper strength. The Lakers didn't have much depth past their big three and maybe Erickson.

Tunes342 They were fronting Wilt and he wasn't fighting for position. Plus, Wilt wasn't looking to score as much at this stage of his career. Actually Reed was more active than Wilt, a better overall player and more valuable to his team. Wilt always looks ungainly. His footwork is bad. And he really doesn't show energy on the defensive end. Put Shaq in that situation and he smashes every Knick player in sight.

He should have fault harder for better position. Shaq would back guys down the same way Wilt and Oscar did.

Wilt was the greatest center ever. His 76ers knocked off the Celtics in 67. No other team knocked the Celtics off in the 60's. While he lost to the Celtics and Knicks in the finals, it is important to remember that the Celtics and Knicks had more Hall of Famers. They also had deeper benches than the Lakers. Both Boston and New York had better coaches. Much better coaches. Wilt went through Kareem and Bill to win his titles. Who did Shaq go through at the center position? Nobody. Wilt was a better scorer, rebounder, and passer than Shaq. The two are not comparable. Wilt was also stronger, faster, and a much better athlete. Shaq and Kobe would not have won a title in the early 70's. Only the great teams of the 80's would have won championships in the early 70's. Case closed.

People keep forgetting or have forgotten that Wilt had just had ankle surgery and was a shadow of his former self in this series. He never really regained his full abilities after that, although could still dominate in close. In this particular game you cannot blame Wilt OR the guards and forwards. Where was West? Why didn't he take over and have one of his 48 point games? They were completely mentally screwed up. All of them. They recovered, of course and won game 6 big time and Wilt dominated. In game seven, they again lost their composure from the very beginning. Plus, the Knicks were just a better team.

My brother and I were at this game (along with Game 7 where they won the championship). I have always thought this was the greatest game the Knicks played, more important than game 7 (even though that was the championship game). I think this way because the Knicks came back and won this game without Reed (their captain and the one that plugged up the middle). Had the Knicks lost this game there would not be a game 7. The series went back to LA for game 6. The Knicks lost game 6. Hence, winning game 5 set up game 7 (Reed sat out game 6) and in reality was only in game 7 for the first few minutes. This team was the most selfless group of players ever. The were the embodiment of Holzman’s “find the open man, help out on defense”.

Happy Hairston was the second-best player on the team (behind West) but was injured for these later playoff games. Everyone says "Poor Willis" but the Lakers lost just as much when they lost Hairston's 20 points and 14 rebounds. They started two career benchwarmers and took the Knicks to seven games. This is not a "broadcast," in the sense of a nation-wide major network. I think what youre looking at here is the closed circuit or early Cable TV feed.

Tunes342 Wrong!! You couldn't play zone. But there was no defensive 3 seconds in those days. So the centers could hang inside the paint.

rex waller , actually I'm right as usual. You could play a zone because there was no such thing as illegal defense. Centers were always allowed to hang in the paint, the NBA changed that in the early 2000's

Tunes342 Illegal defense rule was instituted in the 80s. But there was a rule against zones. If the referees thought you were only playing an area, they could call a technical foul. You will see that even Wilt comes out occasionally if his man goes out to the wing. What the illegal defensive rule did was to allow each player 2.9 seconds to play a zone and then they must recover to their man.

You're quite right and I'm not sure why it wasn't called, but there were definitely times, i.g. Bradley was floating around guarding no one.

Wilt is reputed to be a great shot-blocker, but as you see here he often watches the opposing player shoots without contesting the shot. He seems very uncomfortable away from the rim.

Wilt was still recovering from ankle surgery and was way not his normal self yet. You can catch him limping and faltering at times. But the man he was he never said a word.

Chamberlain had missed most of that season with a serious knee injury that required surgery. For the rest of his career, he never liked moving in a lateral direction. Only up and down or forward and backward. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said that after he entered the league and started playing against Chamberlain for a while, he realized that was the way he could get the better of Wilt. By trying to keep making him move sideways, which he hated to do.
