1970 Plymouth 426 Hemi Cuda (Barracuda) vs 1971 Buick GS 455 - Pure Stock Drag Race (Factory Stock)
First car is a 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, obviously with a 426 Hemi. It's opponent is a 1971 Buick Gran Sport 455. It's not a Stage 1 car, but as you'll see it's been built well (following the rules of Pure Stock/Factory Stock racing) and it's runs very well!
Remember, both cars participate in Factory Stock class through F.A.S.T drag racing. Make sure you visit their website. www.fastdrags.com
Here are the Factory Stock rules:

Pure stock rules (last time I looked) allowed an increase in compression ratio, so you don't know if this is still a low compression motor or not. That said, I'm sure that back in the day there were more or less stock GS's that would outrun a lot of Hemi cars - not all for sure, but a significant percentage of them. My own 67 Hemi ran low 13's stock, with 3.23 gears. My lightly modified 340 Barracuda with the same rear gears would run even with it. Of course, the fact that it was 800 lbs lighter helped.

I love that hemi cuda...and I'd have to choose it, but in reality it's not half the car that Buick is. I love MOPAR just because of the power and styling, but they were lax when it came to quality production. Trim often didn't line up. Paint overspray. Door slam sounded like a VW Beatle. Light doors. The doors on the Bulk are massive...heavy. Same with the hood and bumpers. I take that back. I'd rather have a 70 Buick GS Stage 1 than the hemi cuda. It's a whole lot more car.

For me, this was one race I couldn't choose sides. It's like having to pick just one kid to favor. All I've owned & built were Buick's & Mopar's since I started driving in '82. As far as I know, this has been Only 1 'truly equal' head-to-head match up of these 2 road terrors; and that was in 2003 at Byron Dragway. The Buick was a stock Stage1 455 w/Turbo 400 Q-jet w/strip kit (allowed since the Cuda had dual quads) and Dextron trans fluid. Engine was blueprinted, cam & crank degreed for true TDC, 10W30 Valvoline NSL oil & Amziol 75W140 diff lube. The Cuda was a stock 426 HEMI, 727 HEMI Torqueflite (std 727 - 3/4 clutches, Magnum 4/4 & HEMI 5/4) running Trickshift trans fluid. Engine was blueprinted, cam & crank degreed for true TDC, Mobil 1 15W-50 oil & Lucas 80W-90 gear oil. Both cars had 4.10 gear & were running 110 octane pump gas (leaded), true factory duals (no crossovers) & Heartthrob 2.5 " center IN/OUT mufflers. Both cars were tuned up at 4500rpm. The Buick was fully loaded with options while the Cuda only had PB, manual windows & No A/C. The Buick ran all 3 belts while the Cuda ran only 1. Both cars were driven by 2 other drivers. After the 1st run, they switched and ran again. Both times, the GS won, 12.07 & 12.16 @ 115mph and change. Buick's also had another Real big advantage, and that was ins premiums. ALL Buick's were insured as the base Regal with 350 V8. The GS was an option pkg and so were the motors unlike every other make at the time. I know because I had a 69 GS and my ins was the same as my aunt who had a 71 Regal 4dr sedan w/350 2bbl and my 73 455 Stage 1 Centurion was the same as my 71 LeSabre 2dr hardtop w/350 4BBL. All the other muscle cars of the era were 2 to 3X as much. It was even the same for the 80's GN's & GNX's. They were insured as a pedestrian Regal w/231 V6 2bbl or throttle body.

Had a buddy in high school in ‘67-‘68 that had an old big fin Dodge, faded black and red 2 dr HT. It had a 392 hemi in it. Auto. Fresh rebuilt engine. Crazy fast car. We had lots of fun blowing everyone off the road!

the car was a Barracuda 'Cuda. Had a brand new 340 'Cuda in 1970. The Hemi was incredibly front heavy. The driver did an excellent job of getting it off the line. The color was Tor-Red. The same color in a Dodge was Hemi Orange.

Didn't get my notification for this vid, and sucks when Y-tube does that crap. Those Hemi Cuda's are badass and agree, as they are my top choice for hottest muscle car of the era as well. Although I have to narrow it down a bit and is actually the 71 model year that I like best, with those cool gills in the front 1/4s & grill. Although the 70 AARs are totally sick to, and also really like the look. Ronnie Sox & Dick Landy ruled the strips across the country, and were kings of the blacktop. Dick started with Plymouth and then switch to Dodge, but Ronnie had great success with the Plymouth (A/FX cars) factory experimental Mopars and we're badass dude's with lot's a class 💪🏼😎 💪🏼😎. BTW, love the Mopar content and please keep em rolling bud 👊🏼

I had a 72 Skylark. Just closing the doors said QUALITY. Buick back then was something else. The lines were perfect. Never any overspray. Trim perfect. I love that hemi cuda...and I'd have to choose it, but in reality it's not half the car that Buick is. I love MOPAR just because of the power and styling, but they were lax when it came to qualify production. Trim often didn't line up. Paint overspent. Door slam sounded like a VW Beatle. Light doors. The doors on the Buick are massive...heavy. Same with the hood and bumpers. I take that back. I'd rather have a 70 Buick GS Stage 1 than the hemi cuda. It's a whole lot more car.

Nice race. The Buicks are always lighter, that's why they always handled better then all the other A-bodies. The 455's are only about 50lbs heavier than a 350 chevy. The 70 Stage 1's are also making 510lbs (gross) @ 2800 rpm - they don't need bigger gears, but Buick used to recommend if you were running a stick car to immediately toss the 10-bolt and go for a 12-bolt with 4.10s.

if you don't get a good jump on a Hemi you are never going to run it down on the top end. Back when they were new I often saw cars pull a length ahead at the 1/8 mile only to have the Hemi go screaming by before the 1/4 mile mark. There is simply more mass in the Hemi to get spinning then there is in the Buick motor.
