Rick Hendrick has one of these engines in his personal collection in a black '68 Z/28. As I have read in the past Mr. Hendrick is quoted as saying "the car was immaculate when I bought it. It did not have this engine in it. The engine cost five times what the car cost." IIRC that information is on a placard in front of the car. The third car is NOT currently owned by Richard Childress contrary to what is stated in the video. Smokey did not create these engines. Chevy engineers did, felt they weren't making the power they had anticipated and THEN Smokey was contacted to see what he could do to get some real power out of the engines. And he did. It is truly hard to find information even with the internet on Chevrolet racing engines that at the time "didn't exist". But I have personally seen the engine as a Hendrick employee, put my hands on it, and it is real. Truth.

Technically, any engine with the canted valves and the spark plug in the middle is a "hemi". It's also called a "pentroof" design. Although the heads on my 2005 1200 Sportster have a hemispherical design, HD calls it a "bathtub". The heads on the 2.4L in my 2016 Patriot are exotic...DOHC, four valves per cylinder, dual variable valve timing, and the spark plug located in the center of the pentroof. It's a big Hayabusa engine! Chrysler got the idea from the aircraft engine builders.

Maybe someone should tell this geezer the M22 was the rock crusher NOT the M21 ....why is this guy acting like he's never seen the inside of a 69 could it be he's a Late bloomer "Car Guy" posser ..Or maybe he didn't know that in order for the manufacture's to race a model they had to produce 500 cars ...these geezers are mainly investor types who had about as much grease under their finger nails as my grandma ..

According to Smokey Yunick's Chevy Engine Guide (S-A Design number 2575-4) from the Hot Rod Magazine's High Performance Series Volume 4 Number 3; which are a compilation of old reprints from Hot Rod's Mags prior to the 1987 copyright date: Chevy made six different Hemi head prototypes over a period of 17 years for the small block Chevy. One was a dual overhead cam (DOHC) variant, two were a single OHC version, and the other three were push rod engines. According to Smokey, who was one of six engine builders that GM trusted enough to experiment and report back their observations and opinions (Da Grump was another), none of the engines showed a very large advantage in horsepower, tuneability, or reliability to meet the needs of (in his case NASCAR) the racer, compared to the cost to manufacture. Because Chevrolet was in a the midst of a corporate racing ban, all of these heads were developed and cast in the engineering labs and snuck out the back door. This deniability allowed these racers to keep the parts as their own personal property with the understanding that no one know about them (except for Hot Rod magazine in Smokey's interpretation of the deal). So, no. GM did not produce 500 of these.
