1969 SeaNymph meets 9.9 Johnson outboard Let's make it last another 50 years

In this video I finally get my boat that will handle the short shaft motors I have been fixing up. This will allow me to run them on the water and see how they perform outside of the test tank. This is how I went through making this 50 year old aluminum boat a usable vessel once again. Come along with me on this 5 day journey to get it out on the water again.

I have a 1969 Sea Nymph also. It had been sitting in the woods since 1991 and had a tree growing out of it. I built an new red oak transom and put a coat of primer green on the boat itself.
One thing to help with these little motors is to disconnect the fuel line and run all the gas out of the motor before leaving the lake. Most carb problems are caused by letting them sit for long periods of time with the carb full of gas. Get in the habit of doing this saves you a lot of problems. My Dad taught me this when I was 10. I am now 70, it has served me well.

Great project and vid. I have a 1979 Sea King, very similar boat. Started with a Yamaha 8 doing about 12 mph. I replaced seat wood and carpeted. Made a small deck from front seat to bow. Got a Johnson 15hp at govt auction. Tuned it up and now run about 20 mph, Been in 20 mph wind with 2 ft waves and stayed dry. Have fun with the boat.

Very nice job, so informative . I have almost the same rig , in the same shape. I can’t wait for spring. You did forget the best part of a classic aluminum boat. Winter storage consists of flipping it over on the trailer and strapping it down. So far 70 mph winds and 105” of snow , no problem ready for spring.

Acidizing aluminum should be done wearing protective wear. I know a man that sprayed his aluminum gravel trailer and his hair fell out. His hair did grown back eventually. Eye protection, rain coat with hoody is a must!!!

Just an FYI those tiny trailer tires are not rated or safe at 70 mph. Not much weight but the RPM's alone can cause failure. Ruin your day fast. Enjoy watching ya work..

What kind of carpet did you use for the trailer bunks? I tried some indoor-outdoor stuff I got at Lowes, but sliding the boat over it a few times rolled it over and cut the corners (and it was pretty much trashed) after only about two years.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
4 жыл бұрын
Just good quality indoor outdoor stuff. Soften the corners on you wood before you wrap them in carpet
I've bought and resurrected a 1969 Lone Star 14' with an 1981 Johnson 9.9. Looks very similar, but I was wondering if you have mounted both an outboard and trolling motor at the same time, and if so, where do you mount the trolling motor? I have a Minn Kota 40 lb. transom mount with a 36" shaft. Also, about the motor, mine seems to run fine, but it "coughs" about every few minutes while idling. Is this normal?
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
4 жыл бұрын
I’m going to mount a kicker plate to put my trolling motor on
Great job Michael. At the beginning of the video you talked about sliding the winch forward. You moved the axle back. It appears the winch stayed in its original position. Why the change in plans Cheers
12 mph is fast enough 👍🆗
Enjoy the vids man.. Brightener was impressive... Do you have parts motors??
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
4 жыл бұрын
I currently don’t.
Nice job. Since there is no plate on the boat how did you determine max motor size, what’s your rule of thumb for outboard shaft length vs transom depth. Really liked the way you reinforced the transom. All around quality results as always Thank you.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
3 жыл бұрын
As for the motor size you need to make sure it's just not too heavy for the boat. measure your transom from bottom to top. 15" typically short shaft, 19"-20" typically long shaft motor is required
Will you try a speed comparison running hydrofoils?
@fuzzyfultz
3 жыл бұрын
Always wondered if they really made that much difference. Well I know they make a difference from experience, but not as in mph, but ran better on top and smoother.
Marine grade plywood will have a chemical reaction to the aluminum and will corrode your transom over time. Nice classic boat you have , just wanted to let you know before you have problems with it later.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
3 жыл бұрын
marine grade plywood is not treated with any chemicals that I am aware of. It is just bonded with glue that is water resistant. I also covered the plywood with poly resin and gel coat so there is not direct contact of wood and aluminum. Don't confuse marine grade plywood with treated plywood.
@daviddriscoll1798
3 жыл бұрын
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina No direct contact and resin on the wood is the important part. Sounds like you did it the right way!!! Enjoy
Will the aluminum brightener cause the rivets to unseal and cause leaks? I have gluvit on areas of my boat and I it looks like if I use that it will take it off

Hello! I am having difficulty with a late 80's Johnson 15hp that won't stay running without messing with the choke. I rebuilt carb with kit, replaced fuel pump and spark plugs and won't stay running. Get is started it will run for 2-3 seconds and start to die, pull choke and push it back in will rev back up for 2-3 seconds and start to die again. I have air/fuel set at 1 turn out from all in. Need help please from the master of these motors!
Do you have any advice about trailering these old outboards? I’m used to the newer ones that can tilt for trailering but these do not tilt. Thanks.

I think you could help some folks by explaining why you moved the axle on the trailer. I see too many bad set ups and boats on trailers that don't track right. If your boat/trailer rig is right it should track straight and return to straight tracking after any bumps or other inputs put it off track. If it doesn't self-correct, it's not right.
@Michaelsbackyardmarina
3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Must have the correct balance on your trailer for it to pull properly.
