1969 GE Filter Flo Washer Model 1WA743E2W

This is the first time that this washer has been operated in about 10 years.
After this video was recorded, I began dissassembly in preparation of repairing rust and small holes in the bottom of the outer tub.

My mother bought one new in 1968. Loved the mini basket for super small loads, really loved the filter on top of the agitator. Worked like a champ for years. Wish I could find one today.

Look at the power in that agitator and motor. None of today’s washers even come close to this water action.

I love aspects about this washer, but during the agitating stages I can't help but get anxiety over those towels being ripped apart. LOL

Really good washers-but two things-the big rubber transmission boot can be pulled loose or torn if a very unbalanced load occurs-then when the machine tries to fill again, water just pours out onto the floor-also-if you change speeds with the machine running-it will break the clutch-it is okay to switch from Gentle to Normal-but never the other way around.

Best turnover I've seen in an agitator machine. Impressive. Equal to early Frigidaire action.

If I recall, this particular washer has three agitating speeds, if it had a ramp style agitator, it would be awesome. Does anyone think that GE will bring these washers back?

Why did GE washers start agitating more slowly for a few seconds when set on normal?

  • @mythicky

+Randy Hansen it has to do with the clutch. the older the machine got, the more hesitation on the clutch engaging. That is also the cause of that distinctive sound it makes before fully engaging. I could be fixed, but is probable not worth it because It does not harm the washer as far as I know, it is just they way it is made.

Actually all of the 2 speed ge washer did this, there isn't anything wrong with the clutch. That is how they are designed.

GEs in this era were great working machines. My mom had the Sears Lady Kenmore back than. Another great machine which lasted for years. Had to replace it in June of 83 with a whirlpool. These GE s handled suds locks welll though the Sears machine not so much.
