1968 Howmet TX Gas Turbine Racecar - Amazing JET Sound & Action at Imola Classic by Peter Auto

For the first time, I was able to film this 1968 Howmet TX, a race car powered by a Gas Turbine that took part in the 2018 edition of the Imola Classic organized by Peter Auto. Built in the United States and designed to run in the Group 6 Prototype-Sports category, it was designed by Ray Heppenstall and Bob McKee, built by McKee Engineering. The engine is a two-stage Continental TS325-1 turbine (2960 cc equivalent) that develops a higher power of 330hp and an impressive torque of 949Nm but the crazy thing is the rotational speed that can reach 57.000 rpm! A reduction gearing provides power to the rear wheels so there's no a gearbox, the car is moved by a single-speed. The chassis is a tubular frame and the car weighs only 685 Kg. At a competitive level, a model of Howmet TX won the Heart of Dixie race in Huntsville, Alabama and was the first victory ever achieved by a car driven by a turbine engine in an official competition.

Per la prima volta ho potuto filmare questa Howmet TX del 1968, vettura da corsa alimentata da una Turbina a Gas che ha preso parte all'edizione 2018 dell'Imola Classic organizzata da Peter Auto. Costruita negli Stati Uniti e concepita per correre nella categoria Sport Prototipo classe Gruppo 6, è stata progettata da Ray Heppenstall e Bob McKee, costruita dalla McKee Engineering. Il motore è una turbina doppio stadio Continental TS325-1 (2960 cc di cilindrata equivalente) che sviluppa una potenza superiore di 330cv ed una coppia impressionante di 949Nm ma la cosa pazzesca è il regime di rotazione che può arrivare a 57.000 giri/min! Un Turboalbero fornisce la potenza alle ruote motrici passando attraverso un riduttore e non ha quindi un cambio, l'auto è monomarcia. Il telaio è a traliccio tubolare e l'auto pesa solamente 685 Kg. A livello agonistico c'è da segnalare che una Howmet TX vinse la corsa Heart of Dixie ad Huntsville, in Alabama e fu la prima vittoria mai conseguita da una vettura spinta da un motore a turbina in una competizione ufficiale.

    Very smooth sounding, but silent compared to piston engine fart cans that are in video too.😁😁 But there's certain manufacturer in USA, producing gas turbine bikes in small series. The're called MTT Y2K and the're insane. Every single one of them have 325 hp Roll-Royce Allison turbine under hood and can reach over 400 kph and some adrenaline freak even tried to break speed record with special built one. You really should to check out them, such an amazing bikes 🤩🤩👌

    This looks confusing. I keep thinking the exhaust is pushing it like a plane, but it has a standard automotive drivetrain. What exactly were they thinking? Surely for speed on the mulsanne, and not fuel economy? Edit: read the description and having direct drive is a sure plus. Still don't know about fuel economy using a fuckin turbine that goes to 57,000 RPM

    It's a helicopter engine. I think it is too expensive to manage engines like these, both in terms of consumption and in terms of fine-tuning and repair. In a traditional engine, all good mechanics can get in touch with pieces that don't cost too much money, a turbine requires technicians who know exactly how to do the maintenance and I suppose that if something breaks in addition to costing so much it is not easy to find it.

    I am an aircraft mechanic. Turbines are best utilized at one rpm. They don't respond quickly to changes at all like a piston engine does. They are expensive, loud, and inefficient anywhere besides its designed for rpm. Great for an electricity generator, but will burn way more fuel than other types of engines.
