1968 GMC CM2500 w/478 V-6

Ойын-сауық

The same 1968 GMC pickup as in the previous video now with the 478 V-6 engine installed and 3" inch dual exhaust using the same Walker heavy duty straight through design mufflers.

..exactly!...the only things I would change if it were mine, is I'd go back to the grill being polished aluminum, not black...paint the "GMC" letters on the tailgate, probably white, and switch the black wheels to some 10" wide stock-style steelies painted either white or body color with stock chrome dog dish hubcaps..that's just me...:)

+noshsreqd that gear vendors overdrive is an awesome investment I drive a 1984 F350 as my daily driver right now and i tow a very large travel trailer with it as well ,,factory gearing was .410 final drive I added a gear vendors ovrdrive to it and added 4MPG right off ,, it so impressed me that i changed the rear axle gears to .355 further increasing my highway fuel mileage ,,I am running a 6 speed manual which is adapted from a 99 F350 diesel truck,,, my engine is a mildly built turbocharged 478 big block ,510HP at 2800 rpm 710 #/FT at 2400 ,,cruising at 70mph on the highway engine RPM is just over 1200,when in double OD , barely enough RPM to keep the turbo producing boost ,, with the addition of the 355 gears and the gear vendors overdrive I am getting an amazing 21mpg highway with no load ,, and still manage a healthy 11 highway and 9 in the mountains towing my camper which weighs a very healthy 16,000 pounds ,,,, my mother laughs at me when we go places as a family cause I'd rather drive my 22ft long battleship than cram into her 2008 jeep liberty with the rest of the family ,, and it gets the same mileage as my truck

This thing was built so well. Ford made good strong trucks back in the day too. But these trucks were very well made. I'll bet if someone brought one of these trucks to my shop, I could still align it. I used to own a GMC V6 with a granny gearbox. You could walk with it as it drove. About a mile per hour.

That motor must pull great in that pick em up truck. I drove a 1971 gmc single axle semi tractor with that exact same motor... 5spd with a 2spd axle. Fun to drive if pulling an empty trailer... put a lil weight on her and you needed all 10 speeds. Would run 55mph and think it was turning upwards of 4000rpm if I remember correctly. Beautiful job on her.

There are still some kicking around out there, usually see them on craigslist, quite often still running in a truck. I've put 50,000 miles on mine now and still love it, I always think GM missed the boat not utilizing the 401 and 478's in pickups, they would have ruled the road back in the day.

After some tinkering with jetting, ignition timing and secondary carb springs from Holley, and a Turbo 400 w/low stall converter and shift kit, I GAINED 2 MPG, from 12 to 14, AVERAGE. That was 1981. Could probably get closer to 20 with EFI and overdrive.

If you put a 6V-71 blower on that, you'd have one of the coolest trucks ever. You could run maybe 4 psi to keep from stressing the engine much and keep heat low, but still have a brutal amount of torque. Then the 3.55 gears you wanted wouldn't feel any less powerful.

I thought it was a strange-looking engine being around straight 6 and small V8. I have a 67c10 chevy had for 42 years often thought about and had a 440 mopar and a 455 Olds to drop in it this would be different, guess I will stay with a 67 Corvette 327 look with A6 compressor. I've always wondered about the gains from turbocharging or supercharging this family of engines. The span across the top of the piston makes me think that poor MGP is the result of the lack of any squish or swirl inducing design to mix the air/fuel charge for improved combustion efficiency. Personal history: the 351E in my family's '66 suburban produced a flat torque curve starting at 1200 RPM and returned 14 MPG on a good day.
