This color silent film footage was shot during the Vietnam War and shows day to day operations of members of the 9th Infantry Division ("Old Reliables"). All the material was filmed circa Spring, 1967 in and around the Mekong Delta. The footage gives a sense of the monotony of life for many soldiers during the Vietnam conflict.
The newly reconstituted 9th ID arrived in South Vietnam on 16 December 1966 from Fort Riley, Kansas. The 9th was deployed in Dinh Tuong and Long An Provinces (6 January-31 May 1967) in Operation Palm Beach. Its area of operations was in the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta from 1967 to 1972.
Film starts with shot of U.S. G.I.s on the move, walking across a pipeline, probably at Đồng Tâm Base Camp. Soldiers sit around and wait. Soldiers on a amphibious assault craft, probably an LCM-8 ("Mike Boat"). One soldier has "Ohio" written on his helmet (:44). Another soldier mans the .50 cal on the boat while others sit and wait. (1:44) soldiers pay a visit to a village. Americans pass by the locals in tiny boats. Soldiers walk through waist deep water in the jungle (:12:2:16).
A soldier drinks from a canteen. Camera slate. Two officers including a Colonel discuss (2:47) (9th Infantry Division patch visible). A Huey helicopter comes in for a landing. Supplies including C rations are put into the helicopter. Helicopter takes off. Soldiers drive down a paved street in an APC (2:17-3:47). Soldiers walk through a field and then through deep mud. Soldiers, including African Americans, leap over water and walk into the jungle. One soldier has a map laid out as others listen (3:48-4:55). Camera slate from March, 1967, Dongtam (Đồng Tâm was a U.S. Army Base Camp). Soldiers board a helicopter and it takes off. Soldiers on the move in a field. (5:5) Soldiers perform a search at a village and interrogate and search residents. Soldiers wander through a village. Soldiers walk across a field (4:56-6:32). Suspected Viet Cong sits and waits (6:19). Soldiers walk across dry rice paddies holding their weapons. Soldiers sit on an APC. At 6:54, possibly suspected VC are brought aboard an APC. Soldiers walk down a street. Soldiers on APCs. Camera slate. A group of soldiers receive boxes of combat rations and cigarettes. They board an LCM #8365 (6:33-8:07). Soldiers sit on a boat transport. Some of the men smoke cigarettes. A purple smoke bomb is going off in a building (9:05). Purple is usually used to indicate an LZ or Medevac LZ. Soldier visible holding a 16mm movie camera. Soldiers walk around. A soldier radios in while others stand around and wait for orders (8:08-9:49). Soldiers sit near trees, smoke, and read. Camera slate (10:20) says "Operation in Delta". Soldiers walk through the jungle. A soldier on a transport boat watches. The boat sits in the water (9:50-11:17). The men on the LCM-8 are ready to go. The vessel moves slowly down a river. Men sit and wait. Men unload from the boat transport. Soldiers walk across the sand. Another troop transport boat comes in and stops, soldiers exit onto the sand (11:18-13:08).

My Uncle, Magdaleno Tarango was a Lance Corporal D co., 1st Bn, 9th Marines when he was killed in action during operation Prairie II on 5th March 1967. I loved him very much and I still miss my Uncle Neno. Even though these men are of the Army 9th Infantry Division, it brought back some old memories.

They were assigned to III Corps which was in the far south end of Vietnam in Mekong Delta a very tough area of operations that had been an enemy strong going back to the French Indochina War. They had to do a lot of Amphibious operations to to the terrain and worked very closely with the US Navy Riverine Force(Brown Water Navy) who operated the landing craft and patrol boats as well as US Navy Seals who also operated very heavily in III Corps. Certainly one of the generally lesser known areas of operation during the Vietnam War despite probably overall being the most difficult AO. Pretty interesting stuff if you read up on it.

I posted this earlier, but I have a cousin that was awarded the Silver Star while serving with the 9th ID. His unit was working with Navy PBRs at the time, doing what exactly I don't know. I know he was based in Ben Luc. I can only imagine that it was a very difficult AO to have to work in.

Originally the 9th Infantry Division was in III Corps, based at Bear Cat, but moved down into the Delta (IV Corps) in late 67-68 and based at Dong Tam.

No sound, but I can just hear goodnight Saigon playing softly in the background. I was a little kid of 7 when these men passed through the fort.

I have a cousin that served with the 9th Infantry Division from 68-69. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during a battle somewhere near Ben Luc. He made it home thankfully.

I was with the 9th infantry division in 1968 and I can still hear combat some nights before bed and it makes me angry because it seems that nothing works to make it go away.

I worked in. Broadcasting in the 60s and we used to get AP, UPI, Reuters, etc via satellite. We recorded them on 2" quad video tape to be used for news. Broadcast. We got some gruesome stuff. It was against the FCC regulations to broadcast and soldier with blood on them in color. So, often times I would have to eliminate the color during a chroma key if a piece was needed like that. There should have been a slate at the beginning with the date/location/reporter/and source as they did on every feed clip

Interesting to watch this with no sound as almost all footage from this war is silent film including by news men. Exception are those where a soundman lugged a tape recorder along with the cameraman. All documentaries including those by PBS always add sound to the 16mm film clips. Without narration, my impression is it's hot and humid, endless time of constant patrol where it is really boring. There's always army bureaucracy BS, change of mission for no apparent reason, egos from "pointies," the guys thinking about when they will finally get to go back to "The World." Among all this is the fear of a surprise attack by "charlie" which can happen at any moment.

My grandpa fought in Nam as infantry marine. Only told me one war story my entire life. He said his freind has just been killed and that he had to stack his dead comrades on top of each other to use as sand bags. So sad.
