1967 Pontiac GTO vs 1963 Studebaker Lark R2 - PURE STOCK DRAG RACE (best of 3)

1967 Pontiac GTO vs 1963 Studebaker Lark R2 Supercharged (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race)
First, you have a well-known monster in the drag race world... that being a 1967 Pontiac GTO 400 H.O. Arguably, my favorite year for the GTO. It was the first year for the 400, and with it came the high output option. A GREAT engine for a great car. For the first time in 1967 you could get the GTO with the 3-speed auto, of course being the TH400. Previous to that the 2-speed was your only automatic transmission... meh. BUT, this '67 GTO features a 4-speed manual! How nice is that!? I love the color of that car as well. Very retro, and VERY clean. Then there's the opponent. If you're a fan of FAST (factory appearing stock tire) or PSMCDR (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Racing) then you probably already recognize this car. Yes, it's the Stude Tomato... more specifically, a 1963 Studebaker Super Lark R2. The owner/driver is none other than Ted Harbit. Mr. Harbit, if you weren't already aware, is a former 7 time NHRA nationals winner in the old stock class (which no longer exists). Bottom line, the guy can drive. The Studebaker might look innocent, but it's not. Underneath the hood is a 289ci engine putting out 289 horsepower. How does it do that, you ask? Well, it's got a Paxton supercharger! Yes, it came with a Paxton from the factory. It also features a factory 4-speed (Borg Warner T10) and a Dana 44 rear. Needless to say it is completely overbuilt... and it can fly. Which car you you like more?
Both of these cars participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, so please check them out on facebook. Here are their rules:

I wonder if the supercharger was the reason for the greater top end speed, or we're some other features that also helped, like the rear axle gear ratio and the transmission gear ratio. That Studabaker could really haul.

Love that Lark! There is an old story about Ted. Not sure if he was driving this, the Plain Brown Wrapper (a 64 with an R3), or the Chicken Hawk but he found himself racing a guy in a new Corvette. The Corvette guy was really proud of his car, and it was the fastest one available at the time... and Ted smoked him. The guy was devastated by being beaten by an old Studebaker but Ted, being the genuinely nice guy he is, tried to make him feel better by pointing out the Corvette probably was faster, but that he'd been drag racing for over 60 years and was a lot better at it then the Corvette guy. I'm not sure that really made Corvette guy feel any better.

Jeff DeWitt I would rule out the Chicken Hawk as it was considerably faster than the tomato or plain brown wrapper and not stock like the other two. My dad was very close friends with Ted but I can't ask him as he passed a couple years ago but Ted is a very good guy and the story makes a lot of sense in that way.

One cold spring evening we were cruising and were at a stop light along side a Studebaker Avanti. Studey headlight bezels are identical to the Corvair vans and '60 year models. Very nicely done by the Studey; he wound it out in third gear to run that GTO down both the second and third race. Paxton made a set-up for just about any car you wanted to supercharge back in the 60s and if you can find a complete unit today, it will cost you.

@@CarsAndZebras I'm a long-time Corvair enthusiast. My mother owned a '64 that she rallye raced and I was her navigator/sign reader. She was good and either won or placed in the top five every time. Because she was a red head the other racers nick-named her the Red Flash. This lead to a long history w/ Corvairs and, hence, I have become somewhat of an aficionado on the vehicle and its variants. All the vans and all '60 models had headlight bezels like that Studey. I'm working on restoring a '65 convertible, presently. Fun cars w/ a dedicated and stalwart following. There's a group known as the V8 Vair club that have installed mid-mounted V8s and those cars rule the local road courses.

We found some old timeslips under the seats with numbers in the low 12s. It was great, until it wasn't. it started running crappy, we lifted the heads and the guides were shot. Someone knurled them already. So he slapped on some other decent later heads to get it running, and that thing totally lost its bark it wasn't any fun.

A '67 400 biult to RA IV specs would not comply with the vintage stock class rules.Parts have to be period correct and spec for the model. Those heads were not available till '68 as a RA II,and factory forged pistons and bottom end till '69 as the improved RA IV.I had one of those '69 RA IV , right out of the crate, engines in my '64 GTO vert., with only 3.73 gears and a missmatched intake and carb combo, running those same times.Following year,it was true stock race prepped ,balanced and blueprinted by King Speed Shop in Lansing,IL and dropped into a 3,000# '64 LeMans Coupe. That car ran low 11 with 9" cheaters and 4.88 gears. As a street racer,I ran only one T/O pass to compare with other racers',lifting slightly early to entice street challenges.Forced a ton of BBC guys to do significant modifications with this car.Car went to somewhere around Midland,MI in 1978.It was still oxide red primered when I sold it to my dad's friend ,found out he sold it to a rod shop around there.Always wished I could just see it once more.

To me it looks like the Studebaker might have the front shocks unhooked or so they didn't have much damping. That was an old trick to make them transfer weight faster. And if you had the gearing to keep on the coal your acceleration and forward momentum just kept the nose up and the weight moving to the back.

Guy, do yourself a favor and get some new glasses. The Studebaker is not, “passing right at the line.“ He easily has a full car length, but at the very end the GTO is starting to gain on him. Another hundred feet and this goes to the GTO each time.
