1965 Triumph TR4A

In the 1960's the Triumph TR sports car range was growing up fast. The TR4 got a larger capacity 4 cylinder engine and full height doors, replacing the cut away versions on the TR3. The TR4A went further with the introduction of independent rear suspension (IRS) controversial at the time, but something that would be retained on the later TR5 and TR6 models.
To find out what a 4 cylinder TR4A with IRS is like to drive we travelled up to Cumbria, the home of Lakes and Dales Classic Car Hire to find out. Here's how we got on. Read the full review at classiccarsdriv...

Fine looking and running TR4-A ! A nice review, but I remember that the biggest difference between the 4 and 4A was the revised frame which no longer ran below the rear axle. This was a huge improvement that allowed an optional IRS suspension. The wood dash and additional chrome trim round out the most apparent visual updates. 1967 was the last year for these 4cyl cars; in the USA 1968 brought the TR250 with a 2.5L 6cyl and in 1969 the body was redesigned to produce the TR-6.

Just wanted to support Martin's comments...not only is it only the block itself that is shared between car and tractor, but even the wet liners were different. The heads are different, valve gear size, ports and springs etc. What you actually have is an ubiquitous block used as the platform for many different vehicles. The tractor myth is deceptive really (makes for a great story though!).

John - Thanks for commenting. Yes it is a good story and we accept the differences in the TR4A engine to the Ferguson tractor. We still think the experience was one of high torque as opposed high top end power though. Matt.

I listened to the video of the TR4a drive and what really annoys me is that this chap is saying that the engine is basically a tractor engine; wrong. The block was originally used in Ferguson tractor and after Standard bought the redundant factory. The Ferguson block was made use of in the 4 cylinder TR engines plus some saloons. The bock was modified for use in a range of car engines but every other part of the TR4a engine was never used in the Ferguson tractor. On a good well set up TR4a the clutch should never be nearly as hard as the brake pedal to press down. I presume the roads that the reviewer tested the car on were very well paved. On normal country lanes which are less well paved than A roads, 50 mph would be hard to maintain and keep the car in a straight line, the 4a needs well paved roads to behave well. It's an easy car to drive with brilliant steering, but a newcomer must exercise extreme care when cornering too hard, this is not a modern car a but the rear can swing away very easily especially on wet roads. I worked at the Standard-Triumph for a number of years and have owned a TR4a for over forty years. I completely rebuilt my engine and gearbox in 1975 and the engine is still running sweet.

I had a 66 TR4A bought from a Vietnam draftee, in 1970 for $ 700 and I Bondo the rusted out fenders, and the Earl Scheib $ 29.95 Orange color, with an added bottle of muscatel for better paint, snuck payoff in the trunk, and it served me well in high school/college; Couldn't afford the Sunbeam Tiger a fortune at $ 1150 Loved that car.
