He knew how to dissect the parts of the sound. Micro rehearsing which is incredible and unheard of today. So beautiful. He carefully sculpted them and got what he was hearing. He did not let just any old notes go by.

The pitch is half tone higher, why don't they check the pitch of the videos?

Viennese orchestras tune to 444, not 440. It's not half a tone higher, but on warm evenings it can approach that. It isn't always the video. Pity the soprano who has to sing the Queen of Night in Vienna, where the high F is higher than anywhere else!

@@jasonhurd4379 They really tune to 444? I did not know that. I guess Heifetz would have liked that.

@@stepaushi Oh yes. And the Berlin Philharmonic tunes even higher, or at least they did during the Karajan years. 450 or thereabouts is what I've heard.

@@stepaushi I have an M.M., and we NEVER studied tuning at conservatory, nor anything about acoustics. But I have heard that it is the string players who prefer the brighter, more brilliant tunings. It's unfortunate, because at excessively high diapasons the wind and brass tend to sound like shrieking circus bands.

"von" ( Das "von" ist sein Künstlername) Karajan mag ein großer Musiker gewesen sein, menschlich allerdings fragwürdig. Herzlichkeit und Verbindlichkeit waren dem Alt-Nazi Fremdworte. Wäre der große Menuhin nicht ein so toleranter und deutsch-freundlicher Mann, hätte er sich nicht mit Herbert Karajan eingelassen. trotzdem ist dieses Video spannend.

Herbert Ritter von Karajan was born in Salzburg, raised in Salzburg, studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, made his conducting debut in Salzburg, would have preferred to conducted the Wiener Philharmoniker, lived almost exclusively in Austria and is now buried in Anif, Austria (just outside of Salzburg), and he was one of the greatest conductors of Johann Strauss II waltzes and polkas. German Mozart??? Oh no, my friend, Herbert von Karajan was AUSTRIAN to the hilt!
