The first annual Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship was a one day event held December 15th, 1965 at Sunset Beach in perfect 10 - 12 foot surf. 24 of the worlds best surfers were invited to compete. The television film coverage was directed by Larry Lindberg and the production crew was headed up by Bruce Brown and included cameramen: Greg MacGillvray, Jim Freeman, Spyder Wills, Greg Weaver and Val Valentine. Interviews included: Miki Dora, Jeff Hakman, Felipe Pomar, and the Duke.

    This is so cool, thanks for uploading! 2:20 is a really great shot, even by todays standards with all our modern cameras. Really gives you a sense of that sickening, heart in your throat feeling of taking off on a big wave.

    Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968) of Hawaii went to San Francisco in 1913, and using a crawl stroke with a six-beat flutter kick, lowered the 100-yard record to 54.6 seconds.

    I can't figure out why people today insist upon spelling Dora's name as "Miki," when Dora himself signed his name as "Mickey Dora" (right there next to Greg Noll's signature) on the Da Cat model surfboard. Did he not know how his own name was spelled?
